Or Minutes to the NYSIA/WWWAC Software Summit. Long and very entertaining account of one person's encounter with Stallman and his ideas, in the context of a trade show.

"Linux Gazette... making Linux just a little more fun!
An Ode to Richard Stallman (Or Minutes to the NYSIA/WWWAC Software Summit) By Stephen Adler I recently attended the New York Software Summit held at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC. This was a joint conference sponsored by the New York Software Industry Association ( www.nysia.org ) and the world Wide Web Artists Consortium ( www.wwwac.org ). I, being a subscriber to the LXNY mailing list ( www.lxny.org ), was informed of this event by Jay Sulzberger, who was moderating a panel titled "The Free Software Movement, Open Source, and the Coming Free Market in OSes". I found the subject of this panel to be rather close to my heart, but being a 70 mile commute into NYC for me, I thought I would pass it up. I read the rest of Jay's announcing e-mail and saw two words which would eventually changed my mind. Richard Stallman. He was going to be on the panel and as it turned out, this was too much of an incentive for me to pass up. What follows is probably too much text to describe the event, but then, I'm drawn to the subject and I can't help myself. So please forgive my indulgence. Day -1) It was a busy day for me. Rather a busy week for that matter. I have just started working on this new experiment called

In China, IT staffing accounts for 27 percent of TCO. IT labor remains a major cost driver in China since less automation and more people are used to manage the same servers when compared to more expensive labor markets.

Comments:
Richard M. Stallman, ubiquitously known as "RMS", is the Patron Saint of the "open source" movement. "Open Source" is a method of software distribution which implements a means of copy protection by not distributing the final program codes. Instead, the user must assemble this final "executive" code by hand, thus eliminating the need for the proprietary data which must be included in a company-distributed copy. This is all fine and good, in theory, and the Open Source movement has garnered a vast following from across the untamed corners of the internet. In this essay, I will explore how Mr. Stallman came to embrace this movement.

Richard M. Stallman Interview by Hiroo Yamagata HY: With your OS kernel HURD coming into the beta stage, it has finally become possible to create a complete system based on the GNU product lineup. Now how does GNU development work? RMS: Umm, first, please be careful with that word "product". Product implies that something is made to be sold. Now, software companies develop software to sell copies. So that's a product. Whereas the aim of the GNU project is to create a better community. We sell copies to develop software. So there is a fundamental difference. FSF has four full time programmers, and they write the software. However, there are many volunteers involved. By the way, I'm a volunteer, too. I don*t get paid from FSF. As the president of FSF, I want to encourage people to donate and volunteer, so I want to set an example myself. HY: So this HURD, do you feel that it is as advanced as you aimed to be in the first place? RMS: Having said that, in the case of HURD, there is quite a technical advance in it. The underlying design is more clean and powerful, and that hasn't been surpassed by any other existing system.

He is an unswerving advocate of what he believes to be the rights of computer users and the virtues of free software "free" in the same sense in which free speech is free. Many people consider Stallman to be an essential voice in the community; many others consider him a fanatic or zealot, whose politics will damage the credibility of the community. He holds his position without giving ground, and whether this is good or bad ultimately depends on one's own personal politics. Regardless, Richard Stallman's technical achievements are undeniable, and the concept of copyleft would not exist without his effort. Since Linus Torvalds has described the

Interview: Richard Stallman
Posted by Jeremy on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 - 06:12 Richard Stallman founded the GNU Project in 1984, and the Free Software Foundation in 1985. He also originally authored a number of well known and highly used development tools, including the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), the GNU symbolic debugger (GDB) and GNU Emacs To better understand Richard Stallman and the GNU project, I recommend you begin by reviewing their philosophy page . On it you will find a wealth of information. We began this interview via email, but later had to finish by telephone after Richard Stallman fell and broke his arm. He was kind enough to speak with me at length, discussing his first contact with computers, his time in the AI lab, the current state of the GNU Hurd, his current role in the Free Software Foundation, the problems with non-free software, and much more. The following words offer much insight into how we got here, and what challenges we still face. Background:

A update on the game , Finally i can move on to level7 now. Tips for level 6 ? Look for argv[0].
Finally can meet Mr. "Owner of GNU". Basically nothing much on the talk, Stallman's talk is always discussion on free software, GPL , why OpenSource is good and so on ~~~~. During his talk, there are alot of jokes too.
I think most of us did read about papers on free software, but its kind of new experience that we actually sit down and listen to his persentation.
Intersting Stuff :
1. He can speak MALAY !! 2 .His Notebook : Debian on a IBM Thinkpad:) 3. Drinks He says Pepsi ..
