SAINT JUDE – APOSTLE – FIRST CENTURY Feast: October 28 We have little knowledge of the life of this Apostle, who is known mainly as the author of the Epistle of St. Jude, the book immediately preceding the Apocalypse of St. John in the New Testament. At the outset of this Epistle Jude identifies himself as "the brother of James." This is taken to mean St. James the Less, bishop of Jerusalem, who is known for his authorship of the Epistle bearing his name. Jude, also known by the name of Thaddeus, and James the Less were sons of Cleophas and Mary, the latter, possibly, a cousin of the Blessed Virgin. We find a reference (Matthew xiii, 55) to Judge as one of the brethren of the Lord, but we are mindful of the fact that near relatives were often called brothers in ancient times. ST JUDE, APOSTLE [See Tillemont, t. i.; Jos. Assemani, ad 19 Junij, t. vi. p. 453; Falconius, ib. p. 105; Calmet, t. ix.] The apostle St. Jude is distinguished from the Iscariot by the surname of Thaddaus , which signifies in Syriac praising or confession (being of the same import with the Hebrew word Judas), also by that of Lebbaeus, which is given him in the Greek text of St. Matthew. St. Jude was brother to St. James the Less, as he styles himself in his epistle; likewise of St. Simeon of Jerusalem, and of one Joses, who are styled the brethren of our Lord, and were sons of Cleophas and Mary, sister to the Blessed Virgin. This apostle's kindred and relation to our Saviour exalted him not so much in his Master's eyes as his contempt of the world the ardour of his holy zeal and love, and his sufferings for his sake. It is not known when and by what means he became a disciple of Christ, nothing having been said of him in the gospels before we find him enumerated in the catalogue of the apostles. After the last supper, when Christ promised to manifest himself to every one who should love him, St. Jude asked him why he did not manifest himself to the world? By which question he seems to have expressed his expectation of a secular kingdom of the Messias. Christ by his answer satisfied him that the world is unqualified for divine manifestations, being a stranger and an enemy to what must fit souls for a fellowship with heaven; but that he would honour those who truly love him with his familiar converse, and would admit them to intimate communications of grace and favour.

The Ecole Glossary Jude Thaddeus (Judas of James) St. Judas, not Iscariot, is also called Thaddeus or Lebbæus, both of which mean chesty or hearty . One of the twelve apostles, Jude is remembered for asking at the Lord's supper why the disciples had been chosen to see what the world was not allowed to see. He has been sometimes considered the same as Jude, the kinsman of the Lord, the author of the epistle of Jude; this conflation is not the tradition of the Eastern church, nor the consensus of scholars. Jude is called in the gospels Jude of James, and some believe that he was the brother or son of James, son of Alphæus He is said to have preached in Mesopotamia, Syria, and Persia. Biography of Saint Jude The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the twelve Apostles. These two together with two other brothers (one St. Simeon of Jerusalem) are described by St. Matthew (13:55) as the "brethren" of Jesus. In the Hebrew language, the word "brethren" indicates a near relationship. Tradition has it that St. Jude's father, Cleophas, was murdered because of his forthright and outspoken devotion to the risen Christ. Mary Cleophas, the mother of St. Jude and St. James the Less, was a cousin of the Virgin Mary. After her death, miracles were attributed to her intercession. St. Jude is shown, traditionally, as carrying the image of Jesus in his hand. This represents, according to tradition our principal sources of knowledge of the saint the imprint of the Divine Countenance that was entrusted to him by Our Lord. The circumstances were these: King Abagaro of Edessa, who suffered from leprosy, sent word to Jesus asking Him to come and cure him. With his request, we are told, the King sent an artist to return with a picture of the Master. Impressed with his great faith, Our Lord pressed His image on a cloth and gave it to St. Jude to bring to the King of Edessa and cure him. The King was cured and together with most of his subjects was converted to Christianity. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude traveled throughout Mesopotamia for a period of ten years, preaching and converting many to Christianity. He probably returned to Jerusalem for the Council of the Apostles, and then he and St. Simon visited Libya and Persia where many more converts were made.
