[Minghui 03/22/2001] "Validate the Fa with reason, clarify the truth with wisdom, spread the Fa and offer people salvation with benevolence" ( Rationality Self-Immolation In Tiananmen Square: A Staged Event Witnessed By Falun Gong Practitioners [Minghui Net] The Tiananmen Police Sub-bureau arrested me at approximately 12:00 noon on January 23 after I appeared in Tiananmen Square to safeguard Dafa. After I refused to tell them my name, the police put me into an iron cage-like cell. Many practitioners were later locked up in this 'cage.' Several of them told us that they had by chance witnessed the staged self-immolation event occurring in Tiananmen Square that day. A veteran practitioner witnessed the whole event and other practitioners observed part of it. They held identical views that it was a ploy intentionally directed by the government. While we were sitting around the veteran practitioner listening to his story, the police outside of the 'cage' also heard what he said. Shortly afterwards the police took him away and didn't bring him back. We didn't see him until 10:00 PM when we were sent to different police stations. It seemed to us that the police themselves knew that the self-burning spectacle had so many obviously flawed that they were afraid of the truth being exposed to the public by eye-witnesses. 42. Pioneer Square: A Case Study For Revitalization
Pioneer Square became a haven for taverns, junk shops, flophouses and the homeless. Today Pioneer Square is a thriving community within Seattle.
http://www.emich.edu/public/geo/557book/d341.pioneer.html
Seattle:
Pioneer Square
A Case Study in Revitalization
HISTORY REVITALIZATION Pioneer Square was economically sound through the time of the Alaska Gold Rush, but fell into decline after the turn of the century when the business district moved northward. Pioneer Square became a haven for taverns, junk shops, flophouses and the homeless. This decline continued until the 1970s. Because there was little threat for re-development, all of the Richardsonian Romanesque buildings built at the turn of the century remained standing. Much like Pike Place Market, also in Seattle, in the 1960s the city had made plans to raze part of Pioneer Square for the construction of parking lots and a ring road around the downtown. Also much like Pike Place Market, it took the actions of concerned citizens to save this neighborhood. Ralph Anderson, a local architect, essentially started the movement to save Pioneer Square. He mortgaged his house in order to buy a $30,000 building, in which he located his office. Other prominent Seattleites such as architect Victor Steinbrueck, investor Alan Black, and Mayor Wes Uhlman rallied for the cause of saving the community. PIONEER SQUARE TODAY The people of Pioneer Square feel good about their community; although the majority desire more affordable housing, parking, and storefront police stations. Public safety is of top concern to most of the residents and business owners. In 1996 there were 1249 thefts, robberies, assaults, and burglaries. While this number may seem quite high, the size of the community is one-quarter square mile, and the number of weekly tourists reach into the thousands. Many residents feel that it is the drunken sports fans that wander over from the Kingdome that are creating the crime problem.

Calculating the Area of a Square
How to find the area of a square:
  • The area of a square can be found by multiplying the base times itself. This is similar to the area of a rectangle but the base is the same length as the height. If a square has a base of length 6 inches its area is 6*6=36 square inches

49. Temple Square
A virtual tour of temple square in Salt Lake City, Utah provided by the Deseret News web site. Provides a history of the temple and architecture.

Temple Square embodies spirit of the Saints yesterday and today
By Jerry Johnston

Deseret News staff writer If the Salt Lake Valley were an oyster, Temple Square would be the pearl. The hopes and history of many Utahns have been shaped there.
At the heart of the square is the Salt Lake Temple
Once the defining feature of Salt Lake City's skyline, the temple today is dwarfed by office buildings; yet its vital role as a holy place for marriages, baptisms and sealings is undiminished.
Beside the jutting, granite spires of the temple stands the Tabernacle massive pipe organ
Nearby the temple and Tabernacle, the Assembly Hall stands like a dutiful child. Described in some texts as a ''miniature cathedral,'' the hall was made from materials from the other two buildings. Its array of spires on the outside and fine woodwork and acoustics on the inside make The Assembly Hall a favorite concert and lecture venue.
After viewing the major buildings, including two modern visitors centers, visitors may want to turn their attention to the many monuments and statues.
Each monument tends to embody a virtue the LDS people hold dear.

Bryant Square is a large (approximately 150,000 square feet) office project proposed for a former industrial site in a Mission district residential area (photo below). The target market for the office space is the rapidly growing multi-media/high-tech industry in San Francisco. When coupled with the other office and "live/work" or condo projects in the Mission, it adds to the forces of displacement (often termed " gentrification ") driving out working class tenants, artists, and small neighborhood businesses. The project is being proposed by Stein Kingsley Stein Investments (SKS) (partly financed by the late William Simon, Treasury secretary under Reagan). SKS is also rehabbing a nearby warehouse into an office building at 19th and Harrison Streets. SKS's headquarters are in the former Green Glen laundry building at 18th and Folsom another SKS office conversion project. SKS is notorious for having been the biggest contributor to Mayor Willie Brown's re-election campaign (plopping down $100,000 in political juice).

Corner Jigs for Boxes Use lengths of angle iron to keep corners of a box or carcass square, clamp the angle iron so it is just snug, then wrap one or two web clamps around the outside of the box. This will work for any type of joint, usually two at opposite corners will be sufficient, clamp both ends of angle iron if possible. Round the outside corner of the angle iron with a file to make room for any glue that squeezes out. Cut triangles from 3/4" plywood or MDF for narrow boxes. Round the inside corner for glue squeeze out on these as well.

A Public Square
a short story by Jon Thorpe Part I There is an old man who often forgets his own name. I can see him now and I can tell from the near panicked look in his eyes that he is lost. I follow him and we become lost together. It is not an unpleasant experience as we meander and I think about the last time that I spoke with the old man. He sat by an upstairs window in his large, empty house. Tears streaked his face. I asked him to tell me why he was crying and he looked at me for a long moment before collecting himself, before speaking, uninterrupted, for almost two hours. A child sits at the sidewalk’s edge and sighs. A car passes by and the child does not look up even though the driver cries out the child’s name. I have heard from some people in authority that the child might possibly be deaf. Perhaps that is so. A woman, fingers strained with growing and deepening arthritis, sleeps and dreams of her first time. She talks in her sleep, mumbles, and her husband leans over and wakes her gently and asks, “What are you dreaming about?” “I can’t remember,” she lies in answer.

CHARLES GRATIOT'S LAND GRANT IS THE FIRST BEGINNINGS OF SETTLEMENT IN THE DOGTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD
By Bob Corbett
August 2000
Charles Gratiot is the figure we must look to for the first beginnings of settlement in the Dogtown area. All settlement and development of our neighborhood stem from the energy and effort of Charles Gratiot. He was born in 1752 in Lausanne, Switzerland, but his ancestors had come from La Rochelle, France. He was educated in England and after arriving in St. Louis also added Spanish to his linguistic abilities. These languages aided him in succeeding in business and politics. Given this background and the French nature of early St. Louis, McCune Gill points out that his name was most likely pronounced "Sch R L Grass ioh" (Gill, 266). Gratiot distinguished himself in the American Revolution, and in 1780 came to St. Louis at the age of 28. "He bought half a block of ground along the North side of Chestnut Street from First to Second Street with a stone house located thereon. He then built a large stone store house and office building on the lot." Charles Gratiot's City Home at Chestnut and 2nd St.

View of an outdoor market in Bethlehem (Photo by Daniel Zoughbie) Location, location, location: Bethlehem's Manger Square a good place to spread the word about the diabetes micro-clinic project
By Daniel Zoughbie The weather in Bethlehem is very hot; however, most men here do not wear shorts, so it's hard to dress comfortably without looking like a foreigner. Today, I went to the D'heisheh Refugee Camp to meet with the doctors and nurses I will be working with to implement the Diabetes Micro-Clinic Project. D'heisheh is a community of about 10,000 individuals living in high density housing with shops and other permanent fixtures essentially a small city. I visited a cultural center, which is the base for a variety of community outreach programs, including a well-established health program.

Salt Lake County Salt Lake City ... Fountain Temple Square is the world headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints , commonly known as the Mormons. After being forced to leave Nauvoo, Illinois, members of the Church arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Brigham Young selected the grounds for the temple promptly on his arrival. From this center, the Church has grown to over 11,000,000 people. With the growth of the church, has come also the growth of Temple Square and its facilities. One of the first structures used was called the bowery where church meetings were held. Soon a tabernacle was built later known as the Old Tabernacle. In 1867 the Mormon Tabernacle was built, home to the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Tabernacle Organ. The Salt Lake Temple was finished in 1880 and then the Assembly Hall , a 2,000 seat hall was built where the Old Tabernacle used to be.
