House wanted
Just a quick personal note. We are looking for a house in Addis, ideally in the Aware/Kazanchis area but anywhere else within reach of the city centre would be a possibility. We need three bedrooms - or two bedrooms and a study. And we need to have the compound to ourselves. If anyone out there knows of such a place, could they get in touch via andrewheavens at ftnetwork dot com. Thanks. Posted by aheavens at 09:33 AM

Angry of Addis Ababa
Could this be the longest letter-to-the-editor ever? Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia's Prime Minister, has just published the third and final installment of a 13,287-word letter to the state paper The Ethiopian Herald. It is basically a detailed, point-by-point rebuttal of a preliminary statement by the European Union's observation mission to the Ethiopian Elections. Jut in case you missed it, the EU report on the recent election appeals process, the election re-runs and the Somali elections concluded:

Introduction
In the 15 years since its humble beginnings as a game developer for the Famicom Disk System in Japan, Square has risen through the ranks to become one of the most important names in gaming. So important that its "defection" from Nintendo to Sony in the mid '90s may have been a key factor in the ultimate success of the PlayStation. So important that Electronic Arts formed a joint venture with the company. So important that Bandai's WonderSwan Color was considered an immediate contender in the Japanese portable market once Square announced that it would develop games for the system. One thing is clear: Square's games make headlines, sell systems, and generate enormous buzz. While the company is best known for its role-playing games, it has dabbled in other genres, especially in Japan. In fact, few know that the early NES hits Rad Racer and 3-D WorldRunner were Square creations. In general, though, its attempts to branch out have been met with limited success. RPGs are what Square does best, and with the Final Fantasy series, Square set the standard by which other RPGs are measured. Square first became known for its games on the NES and Game Boy, but it was on the Super NES that the company's talent really began to shine through. Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana are well known as RPG classics, and all three were released within only a two-year span. These games quickly made Square one of Nintendo's top third parties and so well regarded that it was allowed to handle the development of Super Mario RPG. But from there, Square's relationship with Nintendo soured, all due to one little game...

Squaring the Circle
Squaring the Circle, i.e. constructing a square whose area equals that of a given circle, is one of the three famous construction problems of antiquity. Its (negative) solution was eventually obtained in 1882 from the following theorem by the German mathematician Lindemann:
Theorem
The expression A e a + A e a + ... + A n e a n in which all coefficients A and a are algebraic , A's are non-zero and a's are all different, cannot vanish.
Remark
Note that, in the simplest case of a single term e a , the theorem implies that the only point on the graph of y = e x with both x and y rational is (0,1). Although the set of rational points is dense in the plane, the graph of y = e x somehow manages to cut the plane without passing but through just one of them. The theorem is also associated with the French mathematician Hermite(1822-1901) who, in 1873, proved the special case in which the coefficients and exponents were rational numbers . Hermite applied his theorem to prove that e, the base of natural logarithms, is transcendental. (Indeed, if P(e) = for a polynomial with integer coefficients, then we'll get an expression (*) with a's being integers 0,1,...,n.)

A new future for Wenceslas Square?
[27-07-2005] By Jan Velinger Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Prague 1's Town Hall has announced a tender for plans to revamp the city's main thoroughfare, Wenceslas Square, with councillors saying layout and transport need to be improved. They also want to ban parking and to see more pedestrian areas. Wenceslas Square Prague's Wenceslas Square: a natural hub of the city and a busy one at that. Every day endless streams of tourists make their way across its length, together with locals on their way to work, or shoppers just hitting the stores - all under the watchful eye of the square's famous statue of St Wenceslas on horseback. As a site, it's a natural one for visitors. But, there are problems too, there are the cars... which many pedestrians say are choking the 750-metre square to death.

B ack in the late 1930s, a handful of intellectuals squeezed into professors’ tiny Cambridge apartments every other week. After shuffling into a room, they would discuss current events, collect dues and hold an “educational” period, which involved a book review or a discussion of one of the Commie classics by Lenin or Engels. Then, talk would turn to other organizations—mainly the Teachers’ Union. Composed of Harvard staff and graduate students, the Marxist bunch managed to get three of their own elected to the union’s executive committee, hardly enough to exert any real power. The group never exceeded 15 members, never forced ideas on its members, never encouraged indoctrination of its students and never dreamed of espionage.
But less than two decades later, after most of the members of this “red cell” had left the Communist Party and forgotten about their bi-weekly soirees, they were considered amongst the most dangerous people in America. Harvard, as the home of this deviance, was nicknamed the “Kremlin on the Charles.” And all because of a man named Joseph R. McCarthy.
H arvard’s record on academic freedom in the 1950s will be impossible to gauge until the 50-year embargo on archived documents passes on the majority of papers from the height of the red scare. But until then, people have been doing their best to figure out what actually happened during those tense years. For decades, the Harvard line has been that the University was a beacon of liberty, an institution that valued education far beyond terror and protected its professors from the wild accusations of paranoid conservatives. In recent years however, that Mr. Clean image has been slowly tarnished by new information. The latest twist in the tale is the story of the late Raymond S. Ginger, Assistant Professor of Research in Business History.

WASHINGTON SQUARE: A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN Louis Martin NORTH BEACH . It can make your head spin. Stand on the corner of Columbus and Broadway on a Friday night with sex shows in one direction and pasta and pretty people in the other, and you can feel your equilibrium go. Yet North Beach is a great love. City Lights, Vesuvio's, Viva's ... how can you hate this place? But for some, it can be too much of a good thing and dizziness sets in. But don't worry: there is a calm place in the middle of it all. Washington Square. There you are surrounded by that great heady extravaganza called North Beach but you are no longer in it. Or you are so close to its center that it ceases to spin. Washington Square is a moment's rest and a little vision of Heaven on earth. A Hindu heaven, perhaps. For it is the little time out before you reenter life; before you go to Tosca's for a nightcap. But be aware of this: the square is not a square; it is a trapezoid. That is because of Columbus Street. Columbus Street is why you never know quite where you are in North Beach. It is not till you get out at a map and study it that you realize that the streets of North Beach are not the work of a magician with mirrors; on paper, anyway, they form the conventional neighborhood grid.

20. China Expert Pye Examines Tiananmen Massacre
Account of a lecture by Lucien Pye on the massacre and its place in Chinese history.

China expert Pye examines Tiananmen massacre
By Sophia Yee The Tiananmen Square crisis and how it fits into Chinese history was the focus of a lecture given on Monday by Professor Lucian W. Pye of the Department of Political Science. The lecture was part of the Independent Activities Period series, "Communism in Crisis." According to Pye, Tiananmen has become a symbol of change and of the uncertainty that has overtaken the Communist world. "Tiananmen has become a word that fits in politics, like Hiroshima, the Berlin Wall, and Pearl Harbor," he said. Pye emphasized that even though the country's mood remained good until 1987, many problems existed in China even four years before the Tiananmen crisis. He said that Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's ideas were focused on economic reform, and the West assumed that this would move China gradually towards capitalism and democracy. He added that "the Chinese thought a compromise between a market economy, a command economy and a socialist economy [would] be possible. However, the Chinese seemed to be having spurts moving ahead, then stopping." When Deng began his reforms, there was an "outburst of energy, and the mood of the people shifted from pessimism back to optimism." Discontent grew, however, as inflation aggravated agricultural problems, leading the government to give the peasants IOUs instead of cash for their grain, he noted.
