  • As for the terms good and bad, they indicate no positive quality in things regarded in themselves, but are merely modes of thinking, or notions which we form from the comparison of things with one another. Thus one and the same thing can be at the same time good, bad, and indifferent . For instance music is good for him that is melancholy, bad for him who mourns; for him who is deaf, it is neither good nor bad.

Updated 11 days 21 hours 30 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Panpsychism Panpsychism , in philosophy , is either the view that all parts of matter involve mind, or the more holistic view that the whole universe is an organism that possesses a mind. It is thus a stronger and more ambitious view than panvitalism, which holds only that all things are alive. Philosophy is a discipline or field of study involving the investigation, analysis, and development of ideas at a general, abstract, or fundamental level. ... Holism (from holon, a Greek word meaning entity) is the idea that the properties of a system cannot be determined or explained by the sum of its components alone. ... Panpsychism claims that everything is alive and sentient and that there is either a lot of separate minds, or a single huge mind that unites everything that is. The concept of the

    Baruch Spinoza
Born in Amsterdam to Sephardic Jews, he gained fame for his positions of pantheism and neutral monism, as well as the fact that his Ethics was written in the form of postulates and definitions, as though it were a geometry treatise. In the summer of 1656, he was excommunicated from the Jewish community for his claims that God is the mechanism of nature and the universe, and the Bible is a metaphorical and allegorical work used to teach the nature of God, both of which were based on a form of Cartesianism (see Ren© Descartes). Following his excommunication, he adopted the first name Benedictus (the Latin equivalent of his given name, Baruch). Since the public reactions to the anonymously published Theologico-Political Treatise turned unfavourable to his brand of Cartesianism, he abstained from publishing more of his works. The Ethics was published after his death, in the Opera postuma edited by his friends. Some of the major figures whom Spinoza met include Henry Oldenburg and Leibniz.

The 1600's were among the most exciting times for philosophy since ancient Athens. Although the power of religion was still immense, we begin to see pockets of tolerance in different places and at different times, where a great mind could really fly. England was fairly tolerant, if only because of its diversity. Holland was the best place to be. A small country fighting off attacks, military and economic, from every side, needed all the support it could get, whatever your religion, denomination, or even heresy. The central issues were the same as those of the ancient Greeks: What is the world made of? How do we know anything for certain? What is the difference between good and evil? But they are now informed with centuries of science, literature, history, multicultural experiences, and, of course, written philosophy. Perhaps we have to admit that the modern philosophers are only elaborating on the ancient Greeks, but what elaboration! Was Rembrandt only doodling? I will approach this era philosopher-by-philosopher, showing, I hope, the "battles" between materialism (e.g. Hobbes) and idealism (Berkeley), between empiricism (Locke) and rationalism (Spinoza), and between faith (Leibniz) and atheism (Bayle).

Looking for Spinoza: Joy, Sorrow, and the Feeling Brain Looking for Spinoza, by one of the world's leading neuroscientists, is really two splendid books in one: a fascinating report on the physiological relationships among mind, brain and body, and a brief intellectual biography of the philosopher. The connection is that Baruch/Benedictus Spinoza (1632-1677) anticipated many of these newly-demonstrated scientific ideas; he also foresaw important modern theological and political concepts. The book opens by linking Damasio's neurological findings with Spinoza's thinking. The next several chapters gradually build up a neuropsychological picture of how "Appetites and Emotions," "Feelings," and "Body, Brain and Mind," all work together. An imagined "Visit to Spinoza" follows, and the book ends with a chapter - "Who's There?" - exploring the implications of the philosopher's thinking for us today.

Benedict De Spinoza [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Entry on Spinoza, with biography and main elements of his philosophical thought.
    http://www.iep.utm.edu/s/spinoza.htm
    Benedict De Spinoza (1632 – 1677)
Benedict de Spinoza was among the most important of the post-Cartesian philosophers who flourished in the second half of the 17th century. He made significant contributions in virtually every area of philosophy, and his writings reveal the influence of such divergent sources as Stoicism, Jewish Rationalism, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Descartes, and a variety of heterodox religious thinkers of his day. For this reason he is difficult to categorize, though he is usually counted, along with Descartes and Leibniz, as one of the three major Rationalists. Given Spinoza’s devaluation of sense perception as a means of acquiring knowledge, his description of a purely intellectual form of cognition, and his idealization of geometry as a model for philosophy, this categorization is fair. But it should not blind us to the eclecticism of his pursuits, nor to the striking originality of his thought. Among philosophers, Spinoza is best known for his Ethics , a monumental work that presents an ethical vision unfolding out of a monistic metaphysics in which God and Nature are identified. God is no longer the transcendent creator of the universe who rules it via providence, but Nature itself, understood as an infinite, necessary, and fully deterministic system of which humans are a part. Humans find happiness only through a rational understanding of this system and their place within it. On account of this and the many other provocative positions he advocates, Spinoza has remained an enormously controversial figure. For many, he is the harbinger of enlightened modernity who calls us to live by the guidance of reason. For others, he is the enemy of the traditions that sustain us and the denier of what is noble within us. After a review of Spinoza’s life and works, this article examines the main themes of his philosophy, primarily as they are set forth in the

Benedictus (Baruch) Spinoza was an objective, impersonal philosopher whose theological views influenced German Idealists such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and New England Transcendentalists such as George Ripley and Theodore Parker Ralph Waldo Emerson 's ideas presented in the essay " The Over-Soul " are indebted to his insights into the identity of God and Nature.
