Essayons de reconnaître les étoiles pour nous orienter. Nous savons que l' étoile polaire indique toujours le Nord. Pouvons-nous la reconnaître sur le visuel ? Oui, ou tout du moins la deviner, grace aux constellations suivantes dont la forme est caractéristique : La Petite Ourse est une constellation en forme de casserole dont la seule étoile brillante, située au bout du manche est justement la Polaire. Appelée également Petit Chariot, elle est constituée de 7 étoiles. Nous n'en voyons que 6 ici, la 7ème est cachée par la pirogue. C'est justement l'Etoile Polaire. La Grande Ourse est une autre constellation dont les 7 étoiles les plus brillantes dessinent non pas un animal mais bien plutôt une casserole au manche tordu ! Une fois trouvée la Grande Ourse , il suffit de prolonger 5 fois (à partir du fond de la casserole) le côté opposé au manche pour identifier une étoile brillante assez isolée, l'Etoile Polaire. Voir 1er schéma ci-dessus. Le vol des flamants ne nous permet pas ici de dessiner Cassiopée dont la forme est un W.

Hij nam dienst in het British Indian Army en was gelegerd in de Punjab. Hij was een gepassioneerd jager en maakte een aantal tochten in de Himalaya tot in Tibet. In 1855 werd hij zwaar gewond bij een treffen in Somaliland, tijdens een faliekant afgelopen ontdekkingsreis samen met Richard Burton. Na zijn genezing was hij vrijwilliger in de Krim oorlog. In 1856 ging hij opnieuw met Burton in zee voor een exploratietocht naar het binnenland van Afrika. Vanuit Zanzibar werd de tocht aangevat in 1857. Zij waren de eerste Europeanen die het Tanganikameer bereikten in 1858. Tijdens de terugtocht terwijl Burton verzwakt en ziek was, maakte Speke een laatste verkenningstocht en ontdekte het Victoriameer. Speke dacht dat dit meer niets anders kon zijn dan de oorsprong van de Nijl. Dit werd betwist door Burton die het meer niet gezien had en het Tanganikameer een even goede kandidaat vond. De Royal Geographical Society belastte Speke met een tweede expeditie om de twijfels weg te halen over het meer en de locatie van de bron van de Nijl. Hij vertrok in 1860 met James Grant en bracht het Victoriameer in kaart. In 1862 vond hij waar het meer zich naar beneden stortte. Hij noemde de waterval: de Ripon waterval. Hun opzet om vanaf daar de rivier tot de monding mislukte doordat delen van het land oorlogsgebied was dat ze niet konden betreden. Ze vervoegden de rivier in Gondokoro waar ze Samuel Baker met zijn vrouw ontmoetten, vastbesloten om verder de rivier te volgen.

He again chose Speke as his companion. The two travelled inland from Zanzibar and discovered Lake Tanganyika . They heard of a second lake in the area, but Burton was too sick to make the voyage. Speke thus went alone, and found the lake, which he christened Lake Victoria Speke returned to England before Burton, and made their voyage famous. Burton was embittered, because Speke declared Lake Victoria to be the Nile's source, whereas Burton believed Lake Tanganyika to be so, and because Speke had by then already been chosen to lead an expedition to further clarify the issue.
