Robert Southey (1774-1843)
The Well of St. Keyne
A Well there is in the west country, And a clearer one never was seen; There is not a wife in the west country But has heard of the Well of St. Keyne.
An oak and an elm-tree stand beside, And behind doth an ash-tree grow, And a willow from the bank above Droops to the water below.
A traveller came to the Well of St. Keyne; Joyfully he drew nigh, For from the cock-crow he had been travelling, And there was not a cloud in the sky.
He drank of the water so cool and clear, For thirsty and hot was he, And he sat down upon the bank Under the willow-tree.
There came a man from the house hard by At the Well to fill his pail; On the Well-side he rested it, And he bade the Stranger hail.
"Now art thou a bachelor, Stranger?" quoth he, "For an if thou hast a wife, The happiest draught thou hast drank this day That ever thou didst in thy life.
"Or has thy good woman, if one thou hast

Encyclopedia Article Southey, Robert (1774-1843), English poet, generally considered a member of the romantic movement ( see Romanticism ) and one of the Lake Poets . He was born in Bristol and educated at the University of Oxford. He was a good friend of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge , with whom he made plans, which never materialized, to found a utopian community on the Susquehanna River in the United States. Partly in preparation for this scheme, Southey and Coleridge married sisters. Southey and Edith Fricker wed in 1795; Coleridge and Sara Fricker courted and wed at the same time. Southey traveled in Portugal in 1800, where he gathered material for a Portuguese history and completed his long poem Thalaba the Destroyer (12 volumes, 1801). In 1803 he settled with the Coleridge family at Greta Hall, Keswick. Southey became a political conservative and was appointed poet laureate in 1813. He wrote voluminously to support the household, including narrative poems such as

Advice to a young writer, given and taken
Robert Southey and Charlotte Bronte
Robert Southey (1774-1843) was a poet, historian, and biographer. He settled in the Lake District and was a close friend of Wordsworth and Coleridge, his fame in his lifetime equalling if not eclipsing theirs. He was made Poet Laureate 1813. He is little read today. Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) had written sending him some of her youthful poems and asking his advice about her prospects as a writer. She wrote on the cover of this reply: "Southey's advice to be kept for ever. My twenty-first birthday . . ." Jane Eyre These texts are taken from The Oxford Book of Letters
Robert Southey to Charlotte Bronte
March 1837 Madam, It is not my advice that you have asked as to the direction of your talents, but my opinion of them; and yet the opinion may be worth little, and the advice much. You evidently possess, and in no inconsiderable degree, what Wordsworth calls the "faculty of verse." I am not depreciating it when I say that in these times it is not rare. Many volumes of poems are now published every year without attracting public attention, any one of which, if it had appeared half a century ago, would have obtained a high reputation for its author. Whoever, therefore, is ambitious of distinction in this way ought to be prepared for disappointment. But do not suppose that I disparage the gift which you possess, nor that I would discourage you from exercising it. I only exhort you so to think of it, and so to use it, as to render it conducive to your own permanent good. Write poetry for it own sake; not in a spirit of emulation, and not with a view to celebrity; the less you aim at that the more likely you will be to deserve and finally to obtain it. So written, it is wholesome both for the heart and soul; it may be made the surest means, next to religion, of soothing the mind, and elevating it. You may embody in it your best thoughts and your wisest feelings, and in so doing discipline and strengthen them.

I managed to find a photograph of the waterfall which, however, disappointed me. I guess it was taken during a dry spell. Southey's description of the waterfall is a masterpiece. The poem creates a wonderful image of a lively waterfall. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that he spirit of the waterfall has been captured in words for eternity by Southey.
