Two Poems Concerning the Slave Trade
Winter
A wrinkled crabbed man they picture thee,
Old Winter, with a rugged beard as grey
As the long moss upon the apple-tree;
Blue-lipt, an icedrop at thy sharp blue nose,
Close muffled up, and on thy dreary way
Plodding alone through sleet and drifting snows.
They should have drawn thee by the high-heapt hearth,
Old Winter! seated in thy great armed chair,
Watching the children at their Christmas mirth;
Or circled by them as thy lips declare
Some merry jest, or tale of murder dire,
Or troubled spirit that disturbs the night,
Pausing at times to rouse the mouldering fire,
Or taste the old October brown and bright.
"Go, Valentine..."
Go, Valentine, and tell that lovely maid
Whom fancy still will portray to my sight,
How here I linger in this sullen shade,
This dreary gloom of dull monastic night;
Say, that every joy of life remote
At evening's closing hour I quit the throng,
Listening in solitude the ring-dome's note

    THE BATTLE OF BLENHEIM by: Robert Southey (1774-1843)
    T was a summer evening,
    Old Kaspar's work was done,
    And he before his cottage door
    Was sitting in the sun,
    And by him sported on the green
    His little grandchild Wilhelmine.

    She saw her brother Peterkin
    Roll something large and round
    Which he beside the rivulet
    In playing there had found;
    He came to ask what he had found,
    That was so large, and smooth, and round.

    Old Kaspar took it from the boy,
    Who stood expectant by;
    And then the old man shook his head,
    And with a natural sigh,
    "'Tis some poor fellow's skull," said he,
    "Who fell in the great victory.

    "I find them in the garden,
    For there's many here about;
    And often when I go to plough,
    The ploughshare turns them out!
    For many thousand men," said he,
    "Were slain in that great victory."

    "Now tell us what 'twas all about,"
    Young Peterkin, he cries;
    And little Wilhelmine looks up
    With wonder-waiting eyes;
    "Now tell us all about the war,
    And what they fought each other for."

    "It was the English," Kaspar cried

Vyuiká víc mohutnou obrazností ne¾ hloubkou citu a nálady. Báseò "Vidìní posledního soudu" zapletla jej v osudnou polemiku s Byronem. I previously held posts at the Universities of Manchester (Lees Fellowship) and Oxford (Joanna Randall MacIver Junior Research Fellowship), the University of Wales, Bangor, and Queen's University, Belfast, where I was a lecturer in the School of English from 1995-2002. Teaching Interests: Undergraduate Teaching: I currently run two specialist third year modules: Romanticism and the Provinces (Q33360): The intricate provincial contexts and networks which produced and sustained many Romantic writers and the tensions between metropolitan and non-metropolitan cultures have been somewhat ignored. Concentrating on the period 1793-1837, this module uses works by canonical and non-canonical poets in order to explore the complex issues raised by what might be called Romantic provincialism or provincial Romanticism. Romantic Lives: Biography c. 1790-1870 (Q33359): This module explores the janus-faced nature of life writing in the period c. 1790-1870. It focuses on works by male and female, canonical and non-canonical writers in order to examine romantic period authors as producers, consumers and subjects of biography. In so doing, it both charts the development of biographical practice in the period 1790-1870 and highlights the complex processes behind the formation of canonical Romanticism and Romantic literary history.

    Encyclopedia Article Southey, Robert (1774-1843), English poet, generally considered a member of the romantic movement ( see Romanticism ) and one of the Lake Poets . He was born in Bristol and educated at the University of Oxford. He was a good friend of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge , with whom he made plans, which never materialized, to found a utopian community on the Susquehanna River in the United States. Partly in preparation for this scheme, Southey and Coleridge married sisters. Southey and Edith Fricker wed in 1795; Coleridge and Sara Fricker courted and wed at the same time. Southey traveled in Portugal in 1800, where he gathered material for a Portuguese history and completed his long poem Thalaba the Destroyer (12 volumes, 1801). In 1803 he settled with the Coleridge family at Greta Hall, Keswick. Southey became a political conservative and was appointed poet laureate in 1813. He wrote voluminously to support the household, including narrative poems such as

    Wat Tyler: A Drama by Robert Southey (1774-1843) John Ball’s speech after being sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. Why, be it so. I can smile at your vengeance,
    For I am armed with rectitude of soul.
    The truth, which all my life I have divulged,
    And am now doomed in torments to expire for,
    Shall still survive. The destined hour must come
    When it shall blaze with sun-surpassing splendor,
    And the dark mists of prejudice and falsehood
    Fade in its strong effulgence. Flattery’s incense
    No more shall shadow round the gore-dyed throne; That altar of oppression, fed with rites More savage than the priests of Moloch taught, Shall be consumed amid the fire of Justice; The rays of truth shall emanate around, And the whole world be lighted. E-mail this page.
