The widespread musical influence of John Philip Sousa through his compositions, transcriptions of music for band, and his literary efforts affected musical thought and practice worldwide. As director of the United States Marine Band from 1880-1892, Sousa developed "The President's Own" into an outstanding performing organization. After leaving the Marine Band in 1892 to direct his own professional touring band, Sousa was always aware that he was a musical ambassador for the United States and described himself as "Salesman of Americanism, globetrotter, and musician."
    The University of Illinois Connection
Due to the presence of the Sousa Band performance collection, the University of Illinois is one of the few places that John Philip Sousa'’ music may be studied and understood as he actually intended it. The 3,400 titles of published and manuscript music are housed in the Harding Band Building in a suite of rooms especially designed to accommodate the collection. Over 120 holograph manuscript scores and music sketches penned by the "March King" may be found in the UIUC Sousa materials, as well as the band parts to his "Stars and Stripes Forever," declared the National March of the United States by an Act of Congress in December 1987. Even though Sousa had planned to bequeath his performance library to the University of Illinois, he neglected to record that wish in his will. After Sousa’s death on March 6, 1932, Harding wrote several letters to the Sousa family and their attorneys to convince them that the library should be presented to the University. Although the family was skeptical about allowing the collection to go "out west," they agreed to release the materials, and plans were made to move the collection from warehouses in New York City to the Illinois campus.

At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to the Marine Band, the official band of the president of the U.S. At the age of 18 he began to play the violin in theater orchestras. Appointed leader of the Marine Band in 1880, he resigned 12 years later to form his own band. Sousa's Band, as it was called, achieved great popularity during many tours of the U.S. and Europe. Sousa, a perfectionist, raised the level of performance and instrumentation of the concert band. He composed so many marches, he is known as the March King. His marches, recognized as distinctively American as well as brilliant and stirring, include “Semper Fidelis” (1888), “Washington Post March” (1889), “King Cotton” (1897), and the most popular of all, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (1897). Sousa also composed 11 comic operas and 2 symphonic poems and invented the sousaphone, a large bass tuba with circular coiling and an upright bell. He wrote an autobiography

John Philip Sousa
General: John Philip Sousa was the premiere band leader of the Spanish American War era. His patriotic songs were hits during the war. The Biography: Any person who has ever played an instrument in a high school band or a community band knows that John Philip Sousa was the greatest composer of marches who ever lived. This great man very deservedly is entitled to be referred to as the March King. John Philip Sousa was born in Washington, D. C. on November 6, 1854, the third of ten children of John Antonio Sousa and Maria Elisabeth (Trinkaus) Sousa. His father was born in Spain of Portuguese parents. His mother was born in Bavaria, Germany. John Antonio Sousa came to the United States as a young man, and, while serving as a musician in the United States Navy, met Maria in Brooklyn, New York, and married her in the late 1840’s. Antonio enlisted in the United States Marine Band as a trombonist in 1854, and the family moved to Washington, D. C. John Philip Sousa had five sisters, Catherine Margaret, Josephine, Rosina, Annie Frances, and Mary Elisabeth, and four brothers, Ferdinand M., George Williams, Antonio Augustus, and Louis Marion.

Westerville, Ohio Throughout his career as our nation’s leading bandmaster, Brother John Philip Sousa was a fervent patriot.
John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), the man called “March King,” was proud to be a native-born American. And make no mistake that he was also proud to be a Mason. Sousa’s Masonic affiliations aren’t common knowledge, but he entered Masonry at age 26 and was a Master Mason for 51 years. A summary of his Masonic career is seen at the end of this article. Three of his best known marches have Masonic origins: “The Crusader” (1888), “The Thunderer” (1889), and “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” (1923). He came about petitioning the Craft naturally since his father was a Mason. Also, when Sousa became leader of the United States Marine Band in 1880, he learned the importance of military bandmasters being Masons and took the first steps shortly thereafter. It is interesting that quite a few members of Sousa’s professional civilian band, formed after he left the Marine Corps, were Masons. The percentage increased when Sousa became a Shriner in 1922, and toward the end of his career, nearly half the bandsmen themselves were Shriners. Shrine organizations around the country sponsored many Sousa Band concerts in the late 1920s.

BIOGRAPHY
Who was this man who became a musical legend during his own lifetime with such "hits" as "Stars and Stripes Forever," "The Liberty Bell" (best known as the theme song for Monty Python's Flying Circus ) and "The Washington Post"? Fittingly, John Philip Sousa was born on November 6, 1854 at 636 G Street, SE, Washington, D.C., near the Marine Barracks where his father, Antonio, played trombone in the U.S. Marine Band. John Philip was the third of 10 children of John Antonio Sousa (born in Spain of Portuguese parents) and Maria Elisabeth Trinkhaus (born in Bavaria). Young John Philip grew up surrounded by military band music, and when he was just six, he began studying voice, violin, piano, flute, cornet, baritone, trombone and alto horn. By all accounts, John Philip was an adventure-loving boy, and when at the age of 13 he tried to run away to join a circus band, his father instead enlisted him in the Marine Band as a band apprentice. Except for a period of six months, Sousa remained in the band until he was 20 years old. In addition to his musical training in the Marine Band, he studied music theory and composition with George Felix Benkert, a noted Washington orchestra leader and teacher. It was during his years in the Marines that Sousa wrote his first composition, "Moonlight on the Potomac Waltzes."
