Synopsis
First published in 1771, and often regarded as Smollett's finest book, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker relates, in an ingenious series of overlapping letters, the adventures of Mr Matthew Bramble's family party as they travel through England and Scotland. The group includes a gouty country squire, a husband-hunter, an Oxford student, and an illiterate but racy lady's maid. They recount their travelling adventures. They gossip. They tell stories of Humphry Clinker, a servant picked up en route, and they record their individual reactions to the tour. Engrossing and entertaining, the novel provides a satirical and witty picture of the contemporary social and political scene.

Famous Scots
- Tobias George Smollet (1721- 1771) Tobias George Smollet was born at Dalquhurn, Dumbartonshire, of a good Scottish family. He was educated at Dumbarton and at Glasgow University. He served an apprenticeship to a Glasgow surgeon, but except for a period spent as surgeon in the navy, 1739-44, he only practised in a desultory fashion. His first novel, "Roderick Random," published in 1748, embodies Smollett's own experiences in the navy and elsewhere. If his picture of life afloat in those times is a faithful one, it is small wonder that Smollett left the service in disgust. His novels generally seem to bear the impression of one who has lived in a brutal and heartless world. "Roderick Random" was a decided success, and so also was "Peregrine Pickle," in 1751, another novel in very similar strain. Both novels abound in rollicking humour, often excessively coarse. The characterisation is especially good in "Peregrine Pickle." During the next few years appeared a number of translations and a "History of England." Smollett was no historian. But his lively style made his history exceedingly readable and it enjoyed quite a vogue. His health breaking down, he was ordered abroad and ultimately settled at Leghorn, where he wrote "The Expedition of Humphrey Clinker," published in 1771. It is in an epistolary style and is undoubtedly the best of his novels, quieter in tone and less brutal in its interpretation of life than his earlier works.

Abstract
OCLC is investigating how best to implement IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR). As part of that work, we have undertaken a series of experiments with algorithms to group existing bibliographic records into works and expressions. Working with both subsets of records and the whole WorldCat database, the algorithm we developed achieved reasonable success identifying all manifestations of a work.
Background
The IFLA report Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records IFLA ] is having a profound impact on how people look at bibliographic data. By presenting ideas about the data relationships of bibliographic records with the right mixture of practice and theory, the report has been able to capture the imagination of a wide range of both practitioners and academics. It seems clear that, at a minimum, anyone interested in the relationships between bibliographic items needs to take FRBR into account (e.g., [ Lagoze and Hunter Starting in late 2001, we undertook a series of experiments designed to explore the implications of FRBR and look into the practical difficulties of implementing its approach within the context of OCLC's WorldCat database.

Sales rank: 258274 Average customer rating: A wonderfully gossipy, humourous novel!

Smollett has written a number of good stories, but this is probably his most complex of all that he's written. The book provides the reader with a hero that is memorable. Smollett provides just the right touch of madness and humour in his hero to make this a very warm, readable story. The format for this novel is letters which makes for an interesting change, and provides a unique way of developing characters. So much of a person's individuality can be found in letters and in fact, letters are a major source of historical information. But in these letters we learn all we need to know about Humphrey Clinker and his England. An unclean and brutal world it was with death, disease and decay. But there was unbelievable love and warmth too. What a journey! My favorite book ever..and I'm not kidding.

http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.
