ARCTIC EXPLORATION:
NORTH WEST PASSAGE: PANDORA VOYAGE OF 1876
by Janet Wood
These photographs belonged to our family ancestor, William George Battam and were taken in 1876 during the expedition to the North West Passage organised by Sir Allen Young. This was the second such voyage undertaken by Sir Young in his steam ship; the Pandora. The first had taken place in the previous year, 1875. These photographs are some of the first to be taken of the Arctic Region. The official photographer on the 1876 voyage was William Grant, a pioneer photographer of the Arctic who was involved with another seven photographic trips to the Arctic. The majority of his work was commissioned by the Dutch and is still preserved in the Netherlands.
The original 1876 Photographic Album above has been in our family for 128 years.
The album contains 47 original photographs of the Arctic regions.
William G Battam. Seaman on board the Pandora (1876 voyage)
The steamer sailed from Southampton in 1876 and headed for the North West Passage. The young party of sailors were put together by Sir Allen Young in the hope that the yacht would be able to break through the ice-bound North West Passage in one season and maybe uncover further details of the fate of Captain Franklin, who had died there in 1847. However the British admiralty asked Young to change his destination to Smith Sound as they wished to communicate with the depots of the government expedition, namely; The British Arctic / Naval North Pole Expedition of 1875-76, lead by George Nares.

Explorers from the 1800's - the Nineteenth Century
BAUDIN, NICHOLAS

Nicholas Baudin (1754-1803) was a French Naval Officer who mapped the island of Tasmania and explored much of the coastline of Australia (including Geographe Bay, Guichen Bay (1802), Fleurieu Peninsula (1802), Murat Bay, and Shark Bay and the Gulf of Carpentaria) from 1800 until 1803. He sailed in the ship called "La Geographe" (meaning geography in French) and did many scientific explorations of other Southern Hemisphere areas, including the island of Timor. His expedition mapped coastlines, collected scientific specimens, and made drawings of the areas. In April, 1802, Baudin met the Australian explorer Matthew Flinders in southern Australia. He died on the way home to France on the island on Mauritius in 1803. BURKE AND WILLS
Robert O'Hara Burke (1820-1861) and William John Wills (1834-1861) were Australian explorers who were the first Europeans to cross Australia from south to north. They both died on the return trip, from exhaustion and hunger.

He worked as a cartographer (mapmaker) for England's King Henry VIII, was a captain for Spain's King Ferdinand V, explored for England's King Henry VII, and may have secretly explored for Venice. Sebastian Cabot's father was the explorer John Cabot Cabot searched for the Northwest passage across North America (1508). He began an unsuccessful trip around the world (1526-1529) in a voyage that supposed to sail to China and the Moluccas (the Spice Islands, in Indonesia), but he only made it as far as the enormous mouth of the Rio de la Plata (a river between Argentina and Uruguay in South America). Later, he began to work for the English again, searching for a water passage across the north of Asia around 1553.

CHAPTER XX ALEXANDER THE GREAT, B.C. 336-323. The result of the Congress might be considered a settlement of the affairs of Greece. Alexander then returned to Macedonia in the hope of being able to begin his Persian expedition in the spring of B.C. 335; but reports of disturbances among the Thracians and Triballians diverted his attention to that quarter. He therefore crossed Mount Haemus (the Balkan) and marched into the territory of the Triballians, defeated their forces, and pursued them to the Danube, which he crossed. After acquiring a large booty he regained the banks of the Danube, and thence marched against the Illyrians and Taulantians, whom he speedily reduced to obedience.
