Pollin City University of New York, Bronx Community College During Poe's lifetime, one of the most popular English writers of poetry, essays, novels and tales was Horace or Horatio Smith (1779-1849). It is a significant commentary on the changes in literary fashions that we should be puzzled as to the source of a motto for a tale which Poe neglected to identify probably because he assumed that every reader would know it — in one of Smith's sketches. Below the original title of "How to Write a Blackwood Article," namely, "The Signora Zenobia," first published in the American Museum of December 1838, he wrote: "'In the name of the Prophet — figs!!' Cry of the Turkish fig-pedler ." This motto came from "Johnson's Ghost," the tenth of the twenty-one articles in Rejected Addresses by James and Horace Smith. It was a book that Poe knew well and expected his readers to know well (

Horace Smith
[From the (British) Dictionary of National Biography
Horace Smith (1779-1849) was both author and businessman. He published his first novel in 1800, and in 1813 wrote with his brother James a wildly successful parody of the most popular poets of the day entitled "Rejected Addresses, or the New Theatrum Poetarum." The Drury Lane Theatre had burned in 1812, and its reopening was the occasion for inviting poets to compete in writing an opening address. The secretary of the Theatre had communicated to the brothers how silly the entries all were, and how sixty-nine of them had called upon the Phoenix for assistance. Horace Smith had entered the contest himself, and included his actual poem among the parodies as "An Address without a Phoenix." Among the poets parodied were Wordsworth, Southey, Byron and Scott. Smith was a friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley, and was his guest when Shelley was living at Marlow in 1817, before he left England. When Shelley had a problem with his father over money, Smith wrote to intercede. In Shelley's poem-letter to Maria Gisborne (July 1820), which included descriptions of people in London whom he admired, he included a mention of Smith: "Wit and sense, / Virtue and human knowledge, all that might / Make this dull world a business of delight, / Are all combined in Horace Smith" (lines 247-250). Smith was on the way to visit Shelley in Italy when the news reached him of Shelley's death. Smith had made his fortune in the stock market by 1820, and devoted the rest of his life to writing, publishing numerous novels, the best of which is thought to be Brambletye House, or Cavaliers and Roundheads (1826), an imitation of the historical novels of Scott. His most popular poem is the serio-comic "An Address to a Mummy."

THE PENGUIN BOOK OF THE SONNET
500 YEARS OF A CLASSIC TRADITION IN ENGLISH
      Phillis Levin - Editor
add to cart view cart Book: Paperback A unique anthology celebrating that most vigorous of literary formsthe sonnet The sonnet is one of the oldest and most enduring literary forms of the post-classical world, a meeting place of image and voice, passion and reason, elegy and ode. It is a form that both challenges and liberates the poet. For this anthology, poet and scholar Phillis Levin has gathered more than 600 sonnets to tell the full story of the sonnet tradition in the English language. She begins with its Italian origins; takes the reader through its multifaceted development from the Elizabethan era to the Romantic and Victorian; demonstrates its popularity as a vehicle of protest among writers of the Harlem Renaissance and poets who served in the First World War; and explores its revival among modern and contemporary poets. In her vibrant introduction, Levin traces this history, discussing characteristic structures and shifting themes and providing illuminating readings of individual sonnets. She includes an appendix on structure, biographical notes, and valuable explanatory notes and indexes. And, through her narrative and wide-ranging selection of sonnets and sonnet sequences, she portrays not only the evolution of the form over half a millennium but also its dynamic possibilities.
