WESTERN HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION
UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS
Mary Helen Schlueter Curlee, granddaughter of Fred Handley and Mary Eliza Taylor Handley, donated the Handley-Taylor Papers to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-St. Louis, in August, 1979. The Handley-Taylor Papers document the daily lives, business enterprises and travels of the Handley and Taylor families as well as reflect 19th century social and political history of St. Louis, Missouri, and the Midwest. The collection is arranged into eight series. The largest series is correspondence, dating from 1833-1879 and 1919. The other series are: diaries, 1864, 1867-70, 1904; business and financial papers, 1825-1914; legal, religious and educational documents, 1858-1894; photographs, 1860-1893; envelopes, calling cards and greeting cards, 1833-1930's; newspaper clippings; and artifacts and miscellany. Fred Handley (1840?-1914), son of Johnson Thomas Handley (1806-1875) and Mary Rawson Handley, came to St. Louis with his family from Yorkshire, England, in the 1840's. The family lived in the English section of St. Louis which centered on Broadway and Mound Street. Johnson and Mary Handley had six children: Thomas, Edwin, Fred, George J., Rebecca, and Mary Harriet Handley. Johnson T. Handley was a cabinet maker and undertaker. Fred and his brother George took over the business in 1875 under the name of Handley and Bro. In 1871, Fred Handley married Mary Eliza Taylor.

12-14 TABLE of CONTENTS: The incredible story of two old women... Doria (Ahmad) Shafik MRS. KIYO MINIJIMA Cooking Class from Space for Woman - Hard Science for Men ... QUOTE by Rosalyn Tureck and Margaret Chase Smith. Etta Shiber and Kitty Beaurepos At the time of the German invasion of France, Etta Shiber, American author of Paris Underground (1943), then in her 60's, lived in Paris with her good friend Kitty Beaurepos. They had met in a dress shop on a trip Shiber had made to Paris in 1925.
Yearly, Shiber visited Beaurepos in Paris and when Shiber's husband of 35 years died in 1936, she moved to Paris to live quietly with KB. In 1940, they resisted fleeing Paris until there was no hope and then they joined the jam of refugees fleeing south.
Her book graphically describes the confusion and fear felt by the refugees on the crowded roads, some on foot carrying what possessions they could, others in dog- or horse-drawn vehicles, and some like Shiber-Beaurepos in automobiles - all subject to being machine-gunned and bombed from German planes - and there was no food left anywhere.
The two old women stopped at an inn to search for food and found, instead, a British aviator who failed to get evacuated at Dunkirk. They hide him in the trunk of their car and when the Germans caught their refugee column and turned them back to Paris, the aviator - undiscovered - went with them. They hid him in their apartment, finally making contact with the underground to get him out.

Hard Copies of such records are available for viewing and duplication during normal library hours. This compilation is from the notebooks of Amy Gavette and was done in the 1960s . It was manually typed on typing paper. Needless to say some of it is faded and coping it is difficult. If dates don't match you may have to go to the Roxbury Library and see the originals, they too are starting to fade. This is not a public library, they run on support from their patrons and the History room is run by donations, and for such a small room it is packed full of information on the town of Roxbury and some Delaware county information.
