Skaneateles, New York 13152

The following is a list of known artists of the Finger Lakes area of Central New York State covering late 18th C. to about the mid 20th C. The list was originally started from the West Lake Conservators data base of paintings treated since 1975 and has additions from artists known to local historical societies and museums from Rochester to Utica and also contains information from Cayuga County History 1789-1879 Who Was Who in American Art New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America and Dr. Howard S. Merritt of the University of Rochester. Further information is available on request. Please send e-mail to West Lake Conservators or to John Sutton . Additions and comments are welcome. I hope this is of some help to anyone researching regional artists or to those of you who have found signed paintings and are now wondering if the artist is known. Links:

Susan Matlock, the daughter of George Matlock and Sarah "Sally" Lee, was born n Roane County, Tennessee in about 1814. She was later married in Hendricks County, Indiana to a man named Aaron Marshall on 31 January 1828.
In 1849, Aaron and Susan sold their farm in Hendricks County and moved to Iowa. Although they resided in Lee County, Iowa for a few years, they eventually settled in Marion County, Iowa. Aaron and Susan appear to have remained in Marion County until about 1881, at which time they moved to Bureau County, Illinois, where two of their daughters lived. Aaron died in Bureau County, Illinois in 1884. It is not known, however, when or where Susan passed away.

In 1978 Roscoe Keeney of West Virginia published "2,597 KEENEY RELATIVES", focusing on the Moses Keeney (son of John, original Keeney settler in VA/WV) family from 1750. Five hundred copies were published and distributed and the material was out of date so no new printing was scheduled. Piles of additional material came in (from those who refused to respond when asked earlier), prompting the need for an organ to keep all these relatives up to date. In the eighteen years following UPDATE has spread in coverage to 45 states and numerous articles and family listings have been published, with authors mainly from Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and elsewhere. The issues have been financed by voluntary contributions from a couple of dozen appreciative family members. Every issue of KEENEY UPDATE has been sent to the KEENEY FAMILY WEBSITE, started and owned by Daniell Keeney. Items from KEENEY UPDATE may be reproduced and distributed, provided credit is given to KEENEY UPDATE, PO Box 5519, Charleston WV, with date of issue.)

    Connecticut Inventors
By Robert Asher, The University of Connecticut The first significant Connecticut invention to be recorded was the lapidary machine developed in 1765 by Abel Buell of Killingworth (1742-1822), a talented goldsmith and engraver. In 1775, Saybrook's David Bushnell (1742-1824), studying at Yale College, built the world's first combat submarine. Bushnell's Turtle was powered by a hand-cranked screw propeller (the first known application of the screw to water propulsion). The Turtle was able to navigate underwater but failed in its attempt (1776) to attach a mine to the hull of a British warship anchored in New York harbor. In the twentieth century, submarine building became a major Connecticut industry. Inventor Simon Lake (1886-1914) designed submarines that were adopted by the U.S. Navy and were produced in Bridgeport after 1913. John P. Holland (1842-1914) also made many advances in submarine design. Beginning in 1924, submarines based on Holland's innovations were produced by the Electric Boat Company in Groton. Robert Fulton, the New York steamboat entrepreneur, incorporated many elements of Bushnell's submarine design into the steamboats he built. However, more than a generation before Fulton's innovations, John Fitch (1743-1798), a South Windsor native, had used his experience as a clockmaker, brass worker, and silversmith to design in 1786 what was probably the first American boat powered by a steam engine.

NAMES ARE ALPHABETICAL BY SURNAME. ABOUT 2600 NAMES.
The first number after the death date is the section number the next one is the plot number. The plot number was furnished by Dr. Kenneth W. Smith who is on the board that oversees the cemetery. I have checked the section numbers and added where missing. Have added the unmarked list at the end that was given to me by Dr. Smith.
He also furnished the history of the Middlesboro Cemetery. See map.
HISTORY OF THE MIDDLESBORO CEMETERY The Middlesboro Cemetery is not the only Middlesboro Cemetery. C. Richard Matthews, in recording all the cemeteries in Bell County, has located more than 30 of them within Middlesboro and its immediate vicinity! (37) The Middlesboro Cemetery isn't even the largest in the city. Mr. Matthews has recorded 2,637 burials in it, but Green Hills had 4,911 graves at the time of his count. The Middlesboro Cemetery isn't the oldest. Cemeteries were needed from the time of the earliest settlements. Families, neighborhood communities had its origins in two of these. The first was located on the ridge to the right of the entrance road on land proably owned by John Calvin Colson, Sr. The oldest identifiable grave is that of his son, James Madison Colson. James' monument is unique, a large sandstone slab covering the grave and raised about six inches above the ground by blocks of supporting stone, and bearing the barely decipherable date of 1870. Two other very early graves, the first with professionally made stones, are those of Samuel Lane (1872) and William Lane (1886), both enclosed by a wrought iron fence.

    2. This is an outline, thus years rather than full dates are provided.
    3. This is an outline, thus marriage information (spouse name, date, etc.) is not provided. 4. To maintain manageable chart size, descendants not surnamed Maule are not shown. 5. No attempt is made to identify which spouse is the parent of which children. 6. Individuals born after 1900 are not shown unless it is known they are deceased. 7. This family's surname arises from bad handwriting, in which Maule became Maull. 8. Apparently some individuals in this family grouped spelled their surname Maule.
