Famous Scots - Adam Smith (1723-1790)
Son of a customs officer who died before he was born, Adam Smith was raised in Kirkcaldy . Amongst his friends in Kirkcaldy were Robert Adam and his brothers who became famous architects. After attending grammar school there, Smith went to Glasgow University - at the age of 14 - to study maths plus natural and moral philosophy, afterwards going on to study at Oxford for seven years. He returned to Scotland and did some lecturing at Edinburgh University . This was so successful that he was appointed to the Chair of Logic at Glasgow University at the age of 28. He became professor of moral philosophy in the following year. Following a spell in Paris between 1764 and 1766 (where he met Voltaire and other philosophers) he returned to Kirkcaldy and spent the next ten years writing his great work "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" which was published in 1776. This was not only the first "modern" book on economics, it also advocated free trade as the way to increase wealth and as such, it was extremely influential. It was written in a clear, understandable style and had considerable influence on William Pitt the Younger who became Prime Minister in 1784. Smith was elected Lord Rector of Glasgow University in 1787. Much of Smith's later work was burnt after his death, at his request. The only major work to survive was The Theory of Moral Sentiments Return to the Index of Famous Scots

De Britse econoom Adam Smith werd geboren in juni 1723 in het Schotse Kirkcaldy. Hij studeerde moraalfilosofie aan de universiteit van Glasgow en later met een beurs aan de Universiteit van Oxford.
Adam Smith werd in 1751 professor in de logica aan de Universiteit van Glasgow. Later bekleedde hij de leerstoel moraalfilosofie.
Adam Smith wordt gezien als de grondlegger van het klassiek liberalisme. Smith was van mening dat het nastreven van het eigen individuele belang ook het grootste maatschappelijk belang zou opleveren. Een vrije markt zou zorgen voor harmonie en evenwicht op economisch gebied.
Het belangrijkste werk van Adam Smith is "An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations" (1776). Hierin legde hij de basis voor het moderne kapitalisme. Vooral in de Verenigde Staten vonden de denkbeelden van Adam Smith veel weerklank.
Uiteindelijk bleek "An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations" de doodsteek te zijn van het mercantilisme, dat eeuwenlang de economie in Europa beheerste. In het mercantilisme werd het aandeel van een land in de wereldhandel gezien als de welstand en het prestige van het land.

Adam Smith (1723-1790) , the Scottish Moral Philosopher and Political Economist is widely regarded as the founder of the modern profession of economics. His most influential works were The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations . In the Wealth of Nations , Smith identifies specialization and trade as the source of much of our wealth. To foster an environment conducive to specialization and trade, Smith advocated a laissez-faire policy of free-trade, minimal taxation and regulation. The Theory of Moral Sentiments examines what causes humans to have sympathy with other humans.
