Volume 2, May 2005 ISSN 1552- The Importance of Being Dead Lord Frederick Cavendish and the Victorian idolization of deceased human heroes By Jannie Uhre Mogensen Grief is not a disease. It is love not wanting to let go. -Sandra L. Bertman
The death of Lord Cavendish was sudden and unexpected. The lord arrived in Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 6 May 1882, to take up his new position as Chief Secretary for Ireland. He was appointed to the job as conciliator in the settlement of the Irish question by the Liberal Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone, the uncle of Cavendish’s wife, Lucy Caroline. Here, he was murdered by Irish extremists, leaving his 41-year-old wife and the entire nation in grief. In the time following his murder, his image became an icon. The tragedy of his death was surpassed by admiration for his sacrifice, and he was awarded with praise for his wholehearted devotion to his course. In a memorial sermon, Lucy’s cousin Revd Stephen Gladstone proclaimed: “Oh, Irish hearts, he died for you, as well as by the hands of cruel men amongst you. Oh, English hearts, he died for the wicked tyranny, the awful selfishness, the bloody cruelty of many of your forefathers. Let both countries be conscience-stricken with a common shame and sorrow”. As a national sacrifice, his death seemed acceptable. Without having done much other than die, he was turned into a saint-like soldier who fought and died for his country. To some extent, the widow gained comfort from the symbolical significance of her husband’s death. Immediately after his assassination her diary reads: “Across all my agony there fell a bright ray of hope, and I saw in a vision Ireland at peace, and my darling’s life-blood accepted as a sacrifice, for Christ’s sake, to help to bring this to pass”.

Christian duty Victorian Britons are a God-fearing Protestant nation, although about a quarter of them don't bother to go to church. Christian duty is expressed through the high moral tone of public life and in the desire of the better-off to do good deeds ( see Philanthropy below ). In everyday life, it means that all classes try to be respectable and moral. Duty takes precedence over inclination, morality over pleasure. But Protestantism also means prejudice: in 1851, Roman Catholic bishops are banned from using their titles in Britain, and there is considerable prejudice against Jews. And moralism means repressing any mention of sexuality , which often leads to double standards. But Protestantism is not a monolith: by 1851, the Anglicans are almost matched in number by dissenting Nonconformists. The latter are partly excluded from public life and make up the bulk of the reforming Liberal party ( see Liberalism below ). Victorian Christians are often reformers. In the first part of the 19th century, puritanical evangelicals help abolish slavery and reform the electoral system (

Self-Improvement
Samuel Smiles
To Do Justice, a man must think well not only of himself, but of the duties which he owes to others! He must not aim too low, but regard man as created "a little lower than the angels." Let him think of his high destiny - of the eternal interests in which he has a part - of the great scheme of nature and providence - of the intellect with which he has been endowed - of the power of loving conferred upon him - of the home on earth provided for him; and he will cease to think meanly of himself. The poorest human being is the centre of two eternities, the Creator overshadowing all. Hence, let every man respect himself - his body, his mind, his character. Self-respect, originating in self love, instigates the first step of improvement. It stimulates a man to rise, to look upward, to develop his intelligence, to improve his condition. Self-respect is the root of most of the virtues - of cleanliness, chastity, reverence, honesty, sobriety. To think meanly of one's self is to sink - sometimes to descend a precipice at the bottom of which is infamy. Every man can help himself to some extent. We are not mere straws thrown upon the current to mark its course; but possessed of freedom of action, endowed with power to stem the waves and rise above them, each marking out a course for himself. We can each elevate ourselves in the scale of moral being. We can cherish pure thoughts. We can perform good actions. We can live soberly and frugally. We can provide against the evil day. We can read good books, listen to wise teachers, and place ourselves under the divinest influences on earth. We can live for the highest purposes, and with the highest aims in view.

Though the term self-help can refer to any case whereby an individual or a group betters themselves economically, intellectually or emotionally, the connotations of the phrase have come to apply particularly to psychological or psychotherapeutic nostrums, often purveyed through the popular genre of the "self-help" book. Sometimes writers refer to a "self-help movement", though exactly what this is taken to be is not clear.

The Age of Ideologies (1): General Introduction
It must . . . be understood that all the worth which the human being possesses all spiritual reality, he possesses only through the State. . . . Thus only is he fully conscious; thus only is he a partaker of morality of a just and moral social and political life. For Truth is the unity of the universal . . . and the Universal is to be found in the State, in its laws, its universal and rational arrangements. The state is the Divine Idea as it exists on Earth. G. W. F. Hegel, The Philosophy of History When we review the intellectual history of the 19th century in panorama, we cannot help but be struck by the enormous profusion of ideologies that century managed to produce: Liberalism, conservatism, Marxism, Darwinism, Positivism, idealism, Hegelianism, socialism, Owenism, anarchism, communism, Romanticism and the list seems to go on and on. I would suggest that the proliferation of these -isms, of these grandiose systems, was the product of an age in which intellectual life had become much more complex and intense. And there are several reasons for this complexity and intensity. First, the area concerned was larger than ever. For instance, American and Russian thinkers were beginning to make important contributions. Historically, western intellectual life had been confined to the European Continent. Now, it seemed, intellectual life had become more global. At the same time, European thinkers were becoming more aware of ancient thought. This development has a great deal to do with the development of anthropology as well as Darwinian evolutionary theory and the geological discoveries of

    Louise Jopling (1843-1933)
From her obituary in the London Times: Born in 1843 in Manchester, the fifth child of Mr T S Goode, a railway contractor, she went to Paris where she met and married her first husband, who was then acting as a secretary to Baron Nathaniel Rothschild. She studied under Charles Chaplin (not the comic actor I think), who, at first dismissing her work as terrible, came to regard her as his favourite and most promising pupil. In 1876 she returned to London, where Frith advised her not to study at the Academy schools, lest she should lose her individuality. Instead she went to Leigh's Academy where she had as fellow students Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson and Samuel Butler the author, of whom she left a vivid picture in "Twenty Years of My Life," published in 1925. Having already exhibited her drawings at the Salon she had her first picture at the Academy in 1871. It was a self-portrait entitled "Bud and Bloom." Thereafter she continued to exhibit at the Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, and Paris Salon. Her pictures were either portraits or figure compositions under such titles as "Isabella and the pot of Basil," "Elaine," "Indian Princess," and "Queen Vashti." Among her portraits were Samuel Smiles (1812-1904 journalist and author of that seminal work for the Victorian upwardly-mobile "Self-Help"), and she also painted Ellen Terry (1848-1928 the great actress), as Portia. Her work had a good deal of merit, being sound in drawing, if it was inclined to be somewhat theatrical in presentation.
