About the Author
A Scot who originally trained as a doctor before turning to journalism fulltime, Smiles wrote for a popular audience to show people how best to take advantage of the changes being brought about by the industrial revolution which was sweeping Britain and other parts of the world in the first half of the 19th century. In his best known work, Self-Help he combines Victorian morality with sound free market ideas into moral tales showing the benefits of thrift, hard work, education, perseverance, and a sound moral character. He drew upon the personal success stories of the emerging self-made millionaires in the pottery industry (Josiah Wedgwood), the railway industry (Watt and Stephenson), and the weaving industry (Jacquard) to make his point that the benefits of the market were open to anyone.

V oluntaryists are advocates of non-political, non-violent strategies to achieve a free society. We reject electoral politics, in theory and in practice, as incompatible with libertarian principles. Governments must cloak their actions in an aura of moral legitmacy in order to sustain their power, and political methods invariably strengthen that legitmacy. Voluntaryists seek instead to delegitimize the State through education, and we advocate withdrawal of the cooperation and tacit consent on which State power ultimately depends. These book reviews are brought to you by:

NO LAW AGAINST MERCY
Jailed for Sheltering a Child from the State by Barbara Lyn Lapp and Rachel B. Lapp (reviewed by Jim Powell)
Who says issues of justice can best be resolved in legislatures and courts? Back in 1993, Child Protective Services officials charged New York welder Donald Stefan with child abuse, and his son Billy was committed to a boys' "home," although he emphatically denied that he had been abused by his father. He did testify that while subject to the government's "care," he was isolated, beaten and drugged. This book offers a dramatic account of how the Stefan family sought help and found the courageous Mennonite Lapp sisters. Inspired by their religious principles and by individualists like Lysander Spooner, Henry David Thoreau, Frederic Bastiat and Rose Wilder Lane, they did their utmost to obtain justice for the Stefans. Jailed for their efforts, they refused legal assistance and cynical plea bargainsand were ultimately vindicated.

PB (17921822); Smiles, Samuel (1812-1904); Stephen, Leslie (1832-1904);Stevenson, RL (1850-1894); Stoker, Bram (1847-1912); Swinburne, AC (1837-1909)
http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Self-Help: The Classics
by Roger Donway Autobiography . By Benjamin Franklin. Numerous editions. In The Great Gatsby , in order to traduce the bourgeois tradition of boot-strapping, F. Scott Fitzgerald parodied the self-help program of Franklin's Autobiography . That alone would secure this work an honorable place in the pantheon of success literature. Ironically, though, three facts mitigate against considering Franklin's Autobiography a self-help guide. First, it is in fact an autobiography. Memoirs of Dr. Franklin, written by Himself was the title under which the work was long known. Secondly, the work was never intended to offer the public either advice on personal success or examples of it. Rather, the work was intended as a family memoir, having been composed for Franklin's son. Lastly, as a consequent of the second point, the "self-help" section of the Autobiography is less than 10 percent of the whole. Nevertheless, Americans have long looked upon Franklin's book as their first and greatest work on self-help, and that is how it is considered here.
