Power and the Individual in Literature
Countless works of fiction have of course dealt with social injustice and the abuse of power. European novelists of the nineteenth century seem to have been particularly aware of the societal origins of interpersonal strife and personal distress: money and power (in particular their lack) are the constant preoccupation of most of their fictional characters. Twentieth century literature, on the other hand, is far more often concerned (no doubt thanks in part to Freud) with 'psychology' and 'inner worlds'.
Relatively few writers of any era, however, attempt to go beyond the immediacy of their characters' experience and actions (in my terms 'proximal' considerations) to try to expose the more 'distal' roots of the feelings and events they describe. The plot is usually played out in the immediate relations with each other of the characters, and solutions to social predicaments will be achieved (or not) through 'relationships'. The redeeming power of love is all too often seen as the only hope (even where it fails, as in some of the twentieth century dystopias like Nineteen-Eighty-Four ). Perhaps 'distal' preoccupations simply don't fit with art: certainly when writers do try to lengthen their perspective to take in the origins of unhappiness they do so often rather at the expense of artistic merit. Following are examples of some more or less successful attempts to open up just such a perspective.

Upton Sinclair
Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 20th, 1878 to a poor family. His father sold liquor and was an alcoholic. The family moved to New York in 1888. In order to pay for his studies at New York City College, in 1893, he began writing, mostly for magazines. In 1897 he began Columbia University. Sinclair married for the first time in 1900. Using the unhappiness of his marriage as his muse, he wrote Springtime and Harvest in 1901. He joined the Socialist Party in 1902. In 1906, an assignment from a Socialist magazine led Sinclair to write what is, perhaps, his most popular and well-known novel, The Jungle . The book reported on the appalling conditions of the Chicago meatpacking industry and eventually led to the Pure Food and Drug Act ("For preventing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods, drugs, medicines, and liquors, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes.") Sinclair settled in Pasadena, California in 1915. His other works include

Upton Sinclair was born in Maryland in 1878 to an old Southern family. His father was an alcoholic and as a result Sinclair had a short childhood and began taking care of himself at a young age. When he was ten his family moved to New York City and at the age of 15 he began writing dime novels. 1897 he started attending Columbia college, paying his way with proceeds from short novels. Sinclair quickly married his first wife in 1910 ant they couple just as quickly divorced in 1911. After his divorce, Sinclair's writing shifted towards realistic, after his exposure to An Appeal to reason, a socialist magazine. Sinclair published The Jungle in 1906 and caused a great fervor among the meat packing industry and the American public. The novel led the Congress to pass the Pure Drug and Food Act. Sinclair's following novels were similar to The Jungle in that they all explored some facet of society. These works include The Metropolitis King Coal Oil! (1927), and Boston (1928). During this time Sinclair was living in Pasadena, California. He joined the Socialist Party when he was 24. Sinclair strongly advocated socialist principles of and supported social and economic reform. In the 1920's he helped to found the American Civil Liberites Union, which has became one of the most influential interests groups in the United States. Sinclair delved into politics running for state offices in California, but with no success. As a result of his socialist views, his

GREENE, E. MSS.
The Greene, E. mss., 1925-1964, consist of the correspondence of Ernest S. Greene, who was employed as secretary in the early 1920's to Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878- 1968, novelist. In 1926 he went to New York to work for Vanguard Press. Thereafter Greene was engaged in a number of research projects for Sinclair and served as his representative in the sale and distribution of some of his books including Upton Sinclair presents William Fox. Mrs. Mary Craig (Kimbrough) Sinclair, (Mrs. Upton Beall Sinclair), 1883-1961, author, who participated actively in the making of the film in Mexico, wrote to Greene about this and sent copies of other correspondence to him to keep him informed. In 1950 Greene arranged to publish in Intro for Winter, 1951, a story "Brother Logan" written by Upton Sinclair under Greene's own name as suggested by Sinclair. A brief flurry of editorial interest in Greene's writing followed. The collection includes a folder of printed material and photographs of Sergei Mikahailovich Eisenstein and Upton Beall Sinclair. Collection size: 409 items For more information about this collection and any related materials contact the Manuscripts Department, Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405 Telephone: (812) 855-2452.
