Upton Sinclair
Partial list of works Springtime and Harvest Prince Hagen The Jungle The Moneychangers ... Affectionately Eve Upton Sinclair (September 20, 1878 - November 25, 1968) wrote in many genres, often advocating Socialist views, and achieved considerable popularity in the early twentieth century. He gained particular fame for his novel, The Jungle (1906), which dealt with conditions in U.S. meat packing industry and caused a public uproar which ultimately led to the passage of the Meat Inspection Act in 1906. His parents came from the Southern gentry, and his father's family had a distinguished naval tradition stretching back to the American Revolution. His great-grandfather was Commodore Arthur Sinclair (died 1831), who had served in the War of 1812. His grandfather, Captain Arthur Sinclair, served first in the U.S. Navy then resigned to join the Confederate service. The family fortunes had suffered after the Civil War, and so Upton Sinclair had an unusual upbringing that mixed wealth and poverty. His father was an alcoholic and his immediate family was poor, but he often stayed with his wealthy maternal relatives in New York, allowing him to experience two extremes of American society.

Included are "strong comprehension/discussion questions on the novel as well as an essay assignment." Although it was written for college students, "it has a clear style and is easily maneuvered." Historic Humanist Series
Upton Sinclair
September 1998 Upton Sinclair was a famous novelist and social crusader from California who pioneered the kind of journalism known as "muckraking." His best-known novel was The Jungle, which was an expose of the appalling and unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. The Jungle was influential in obtaining passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. Sinclair's interests ranged over a wide variety of topics in his many books and articles. He would receive a Pulitzer Prize for a later novel about Hitler's rise to power. His contemporary, the writer Edmund Wilson, would say of him: "Practically alone among the American writers of his generation, [Sinclair] put to the American public the fundamental questions raised by capitalism in such a way that they could not escape them." To My Wife
Who is the creator of the most charming character in this story, "Mrs. Godd," and who positively refuses to permit the book to go to press until it has been explained that the character is a Grecian Godd and not a Hebrew Godd, so that no one may accuse the creator of sacrilege.
Section 1 Now and then it occurs to one to reflect upon what slender threads of accident depend the most important circumstances of his life; to look back and shudder, realizing how close to the edge of nothingness his being has come. A young man is walking down the street, quite casually, with an empty mind and no set purpose; he comes to a crossing, and for no reason that he could tell he takes the right hand turn instead of the left; and so it happens that he encounters a blue-eyed girl, who sets his heart to beating. He meets the girl, marries her and she became your mother. But now, suppose the young man had taken the left hand turn instead of the right, and had never met the blue-eyed girl; where would you be now, and what would have become of those qualities of mind which you consider of importance to the world, and those grave affairs of business to which your time is devoted?
