President Theodore Roosevelt
American History Study Guide Upton Sinclair and the Muckrakers American novelist and journalist Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was best known for his book The Jungle, which exposed unsanitary conditions in American meat-packing plants in 1901. During the first decade of the twentieth century, Sinclair was associated with a circle of investigative reporters called "muckrakers," because they exposed the seamier (unwholesome) side of American life. Muckrakers are considered to have been excellent reporters who thoroughly researched their stories and based their reports on provable facts. Nevertheless, President Roosevelt lumped those writers with more sensationalistic journalists who wrote stories without presenting evidence to back their claims. The term "muckraker," was, in fact, coined by President Roosevelt in a colorful speech he gave on April 15, 1906 (see

Sinclair, Upton American writer and social and economic reformer, born in Baltimore, Maryland, and educated at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University. Although he was unsuccessful as a Socialist Party candidate for political office, his vigorous criticism of abuses in American economic and social life helped lay the groundwork for a number of reforms. In the 1920s he helped found the American Civil Liberties Union.
The author of 90 books, Sinclair became well known after the publication of his novel The Jungle (1906), which exposed the unsanitary and miserable working conditions in the stockyards of Chicago, Illinois, and led to an investigation by the federal government and the subsequent passage of pure food laws. Sinclair wrote other social and political novels and studies advocating prohibition and criticizing the newspaper industry. His well-known series of 11 novels concerned with Lanny Budd, a wealthy American secret agent who participates in important international events, includes World's End (1940) and Dragon's Teeth (1942), which dealt with Germany under the Nazis and won the 1943 Pulitzer Prize in fiction. He also wrote The Autobiography of Upton Sinclair (1962).

The Brass Check
A Study of American Journalism
Upton Sinclair
Introduction by Robert W. McChesney and Ben Scott
In this systematic critique of the structural basis of U.S. mediaarguably the first one ever publishedUpton Sinclair writes that "American journalism is a class institution serving the rich and spurning the poor." Likening journalists to prostitutes, the title of the book refers to a chit that was issued to patrons of urban brothels of the era. Fueled by mounting disdain for newspapers run by business tycoons and conservative editors, Sinclair self-published The Brass Check in the years after The Jungle had made him a household name. Despite Sinclair's claim that this was his most important book, it was dismissed by critics and shunned by reviewers. Yet it sold over 150,000 copies and enjoyed numerous printings. A substantial introduction to this paperback edition by Robert W. McChesney and Ben Scott asserts the book's importance as a cornerstone critique of commercial journalism and a priceless resource for understanding the political turbulence of the Progressive Era. Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and social reformer who exposed the horrors of the Chicago meat-packing industry in The Jungle and revealed his socialist beliefs in such works as Metropolis

Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) The Jungle
The publication of Sinclair's novel which told the story of a poor Lithuanian immigrant working in the stockyards of Chicago led to the passage of both the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act in 1906. Despite the passage of these acts, Sinclair's novel continues to convince many of its readers to become vegetarians. In the fall of 1904 in preparation for the writing of The Jungle , Sinclair visited Chicago to observe the slaughterhouses and meat factories. His work reflects the brutally unsanitary conditions that he witnessed.
