Christian Schussele, oil on canvas, 1863. Here, in an aggrandized view of the late author's study at Sunnyside, fourteen of Irving's fellow writers are depicted, left to right: Henry T. Tuckerman (1813-1871), Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870), Fitz-Greene Halleck (1790-1867), Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867), William H. Prescott (1796-1859), Irving, James Kirke Paulding (1778-1860), Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), John Pendleton Kennedy (1795-1870), James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), and George Bancroft (1800-1891). A gathering of all these men at the same time never took place: indeed, Cooper, Paulding, Prescott, and Irving were already deceased when the picture was painted. But many of these men had visited Irving at Sunnyside. Historic Hudson Valley (c) 1999 Back to About Sunnyside

Book Description
Long considered a leading literary figure of the Old South, William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) wrote letters, novels, short fiction, drama, essays, and poetry in his prolific career. Born in Charleston to an old South Carolina family of modest means and raised by a grandmother with whom his father left him after his mother's death, Simms felt a simultaneous sense of loyalty to and alienation from his native region. He was a major intellectual figure on the East Coast before the Civil War but saw his New York publishers abandon him after secession, of which he was a vocal supporter. Simms's novels and poetry have been published in modern editions, and he has been the subject of numerous biographies and critical studies, but until now there has been no collection covering the broad spectrum of his writings. The Simms Reader presents a selection of his nonnovelistic workletters, short fiction, essays, historical writings, poetry, and epigramschosen and introduced by the preeminent Simms scholar John Caldwell Guilds.
About the Author
John Caldwell Guilds, Distinguished Professor of Humanities at the University of Arkansas, is the author of Simms: A Literary Life and the editor of numerous editions of Simms's work.

If all goes well, it will be included with this email. Three of the six books plagerizing the ANNUAL RECORD are listed for other campaigns. We did not run across the other three probably in the Rare Books Room. The inventory is still not complete but well on it's way. I tried to be careful about the categories, but you are the best judge of where the books should be. Hopefully, there are no duplicates from the first list. I am sending you the supporting information for the listings via snail mail. ; of the Company of Military Historians, 1962-
