In this respect, it is not different from any other social institution—churches, governmental agencies, families, clubs, industries and the like. It, like them, is subject to influence by the various elements that comprise society—political, structural, economic, religious and the like. It is suggested that the study of history can give an awareness of the structural and value ingredients out of which the present has emerged. Contemporary problems may, therefore, be accounted for by an analysis of what are presumed to be significant historical antecedents. For our purpose, those antecedents considered most significant for understanding the school are the values that people hold, and maybe, live by. The major effect of this course will be directed towards seeing how the values which functioned historically in American culture have been reflected in the school system—its task, curriculum, methodology, conception of the student, teacher role, and authority structure.

  • Background note Administrative information Background note Born in the mining town of Central City, Colorado, as the daughter of an engineer, Florence Rena Sabin was raised in New England and carved out a career of firsts in developmental biology and anatomy. Her early research centered on the embryological origins of the lymphatic system, and she later worked on the origins of blood, blood cells, and blood vessels, on the histology of the brain, and on the pathology and immunology of tuberculosis. In September, 1925, Sabin accepted the invitation to head the Department of Cellular Studies at the Rockefeller Institute, becoming the first woman faculty member there, and continuing her work on tuberculosis. She retired to Colorado in 1938, but emerged six years later at the request of the governor to chair a subcommittee on public health and help reform and modernize the state's public health system. She retired a second time in 1951 and died October 3, 1953. Honors accrued to Sabin throughout her career, including a number of firsts. In addition to being the first female graduate of Hopkins medical school, the first full professor there, and the first at Rockefeller, she was the first president of the American Association of Anatomists (1924) and the first woman member of the National Academy of Sciences (1925). She was selected as one of two representatives for the state of Colorado in the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.

Class Notes - Winter 2001
I (Florence Dunbar Kerr) visited Jane Mochel Aukerman in Medina, Ohio. Jane fell last spring, was homebound for a month, and went to a therapy clinic for another month, keeping her from our 60th reunion. She feels much better now and is driving and attending her scheduled activities. Rosemary Jane Kirk Fiske now lives in Vero Beach, FL. Her favorite Wooster memories are of the wonderful friends she made there. Eleanor Bentley Gilbert and her husband, Bob, have have moved into a retirement community in Largo, FL. This seemed the wise thing to do since Eleanor has developed osteoarthritis and uses a wheelchair. She taught math for 30 years, and her husband was a school administrator. They have visited almost every state in their camper and were avid boaters. Jim and Frances Rohrabaugh Macaulay also live in Florida. Jim practiced medicine in Seven Lakes, and they decided to stay there after he retired. It also was retirement for Frances, since she had done secretarial work for Jim. Now she has more time for bridge and reading. Bill plays some golf and is researching the roots of the Simmonds clan. At our reunion, he was thinking about a trip to England to continue his genealogical work.
