Name: Henryk Sienkiewicz Birth Date: May 4, 1846 Death Date: November 14, 1916 Place of Birth: Wola Okrzejska, Poland Place of Death: Vevey, Switzerland Nationality: Polish Gender: Male Occupations: author Henryk Sienkiewicz Main Biography The Polish novelist and short-story writer Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) wrote historical novels on an epic scale. His evocations of the Middle Ages and the 17th century, as well as the early Christian era, are vivid, stirring, and often beautiful. Born on May 4, 1846, in Wola Okrzejska in Russian-occupied Poland, Henryk Sienkiewicz enjoyed a peaceful childhood in the country, encountering the conflicts of his divided land only when his family moved to Warsaw and the boy began secondary school. An average student, Sienkiewicz graduated to a post as tutor in a wealthy family before returning to Warsaw University; there he hesitated between medicine and law, finally transferring to the faculty of history and literature. He left the university in 1871 without taking his examinations. During the next 5 years Sienkiewicz painfully established himself as a free-lance writer and journalist. He distinguished himself as a chronicle writer, a popular reporting genre that took him to Vienna, Ostend, and Paris; his regular

The Museum honours Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916), the writer and essayist noted particularly for his historical novels written to "bolster Poles' spirits" during the partitions. His best-known works are the trilogy OGNIEM I MIECZEM / WITH FIRE AND SWORD POTOP / THE DELUGE and PAN WOLODYJOWSKI KRZYZACY / THE BLACK CRUSADERS , and QUO VADIS , set in Nero's Rome, for which Sienkiewicz received the Nobel Prize in 1905. The Museum is housed in a small, eclectic palace built in 1900-1902, which was designed by Hugo Kuder and presented to Henryk Sienkiewicz as a gift from the Polish nation. In 1958, Sienkiewicz's son, Henryk Jozef, and daughter, Jadwiga Kornilowiczowa, arranged that a museum commemorating their father be opened in the palace's interiors. The Museum's first curator was Henryk's daughter-in-law, Zuzanna.

I have written this Home Page hoping that someone who reads it will find the information, about some members of my family, interesting. I have discovered that the lives of some of them were extraordinary. Some of them became famous and very influential: Tomasz Mineyko Zygmunt Mineyko Henryk Sienkiewicz Georgios Papandreou ... Ksawery Puslowski (1906-1998), others remained unknown. However, all of them had very interesting lives that became evident to me when I had the opportunity to learn more about them. For example, who would have thought that Andreas Papandreou who was the Prime Minister of Greece for many years and led the political fight against Turkey, might have anything in common with the leaders of the battle of Vienna (between the united forces of Europe and the Ottoman Empire on September 12, 1683). His uncle prince Stanislaw Jablonowski was a direct descendent of general Stanislaw Jablonowski who led the Polish infantry and cavalry in this battle. The general Jablonowski was the second leader of united forces after monarch Jan III Sobieski. His other uncle, count Karol Ludwik Potocki, was a descendent of another general who took part in the same battle. Who would have thought that

Home Famous Poles Henryk Sienkiewicz Famous Poles Henryk Sienkiewicz His works Henryk Sienkiewicz was the first Polish author to receive the award for literature, in 1905, four years after the first Nobel Prize. He wrote about the most heroic and tragic episodes of Polish history. His best known work is Quo Vadis? (1896), an analogy of his compatriots and Russia to the early Christians and Imperial Rome but his greatest work is the trilogy With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Pan Wolodyjowski (1883-1888). In his day, his country had ceased to exist politically. Through his historical writings he was, as he said, the Ambassador of Poland to the world at large.
