Sir William Sidney (1482 - 1554)
William was a courtier to King Henry VIII and tutor (and later steward) to his son Edward. In 1552 - one year before his death, aged just 26 - Edward VI granted Penshurst to Sir William Sidney. William, now aged 70, had little time to enjoy Penshurst though and his son, Henry , inherited the property on his death just two years later.
Sir Henry Sidney (1529 - 1586)
Henry had spent his early life at court as the companion of the the young prince Edward. Within two years of Penshurst being given to the Sidney family both his father and childhood friend - now King Edward VI - were dead. Edward contracted tuberculosis (although it is also rumoured that he was poisoned) and is said to have died in Henry's arms. In 1553 Henry married Lady Mary Dudley, sister to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick and Lord Guildford Dudley. Guildford was married to the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, grand-daughter to Henry VII who had been named by Edward VI (under pressure from John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland - Henry Sidney's father-in law) as his successor. Lady Jane reluctantly became queen but after only nine days the Lord Mayor of London announced that Henry VIII's eldest daughter, Mary, was rightfully Queen. Lady Jane Grey and many of her supporters - including her husband and father-in-law - were executed. Her brothers-in-law Ambrose and Robert were confined to the Tower of London but Henry Sidney and his wife escaped any implications.

Biography of Sir Philip Sidney
Sir Philip Sidney (1554 - 1586)
Sir Philip Sidney (November 30, 1554 - October 17, 1586) became one of the Elizabethan Age's most prominent figures. Famous in his day in England as a poet, courtier and soldier, he remains known as a writer of sonnets. Born at Penshurst, Kent, he was the eldest son of Sir Henry Sidney and Lady Mary Dudley. His mother was the daughter of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, and the sister of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Philip was educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church College, Oxford. He was much travelled and highly learned. He was knighted in 1582, and three years later became governor of Flushing in the Netherlands. He married Frances, daughter of Sir Francis Walsingham. Sir Philip's life ended prematurely when he suffered a fatal wound at the Battle of Zutphen. His great work, Arcadia , was only published after his death.

    A detailed summary of The Old Arcadia
    Book I
    Duke Basilius, ruler of Arcadia, his wife Gynecia and their young daughters Pamela and Philoclea go to live in a remote rural village in an attempt to avoid a fearful oracle that Basilius has received at Delphi, announcing that his elder daughter will be stolen from him, the younger "embrace an uncouth love," while he will commit adultery with his wife and a foreigner will sit on his throne.
    Two noble cousins, Pyrocles and Musidorus, are travelling through Arcadia when Pyrocles sees a painting of Philoclea and falls in love with her. He decides that the best way of approaching her is for him to disguise himself as a girl, Cleophila. As he comes to the village, disguised, he meets the rough shepherd Dametas who is guarding the family, then the Duke who falls in love with "her" and urges her to stay. Musidorus, watching events from the woods, sees Pamela and falls in love with her, so he dresses as a shepherd, Dorus, in the hope of being able to stay near her.
    A lion and bear suddenly appear. Cleophila saves Philoclea, killing the lion; Gynecia realizes that this must be a man, and falls in love with him. Dorus saves Pamela by killing the bear. By the end of the book, everyone is in love, including Philoclea, who is most perplexed by her feelings towards Cleophila.

Y ou cannot escape the fact that many of the Sidneys who have played a significant role in British history are members of this distinguished family. I have devoted this page of the directory to Penshurst, its history and its links with the Sidney family. Contents and Links Sir William Sidney (1482 - 1554) Sir Henry Sidney (1529 - 1586) Sir Philip Sidney (1554 - 1586) Knights of the Garter ... The Gardens of Penshurst The History of Penshurst
T he history of Penshurst precedes Sir William by some 150 years. The estate, consisting of 4000 acres of hunting land, was bought by Sir John de Pultney in 1338 as a country retreat within easy reach of London. Pultney was a successful merchant, dealing in wool and wine, who had also lent significant amounts of money to the king, Edward III to support his hostilities against France. The enormous great hall that he built, measuring 60ft by 32ft, was built of local sandstone with chestnut beams decorated with life-size wooden figures. Now known as the Baron's Hall , it soared to a height of 60ft and took three years to complete.

  • Loving in truth, and fain in verse my love to show,
  • That she, dear she, might take some pleasure of my pain,
  • Pleasure might cause her read, reading might make her know,
  • Knowledge might pity win, and pity grace obtain,
  • I sought fit words to paint the blackest face of woe;
  • Studying inventions fine her wits to entertain,
  • Oft turning others' leaves, to see if thence would flow
  • Some fresh and fruitful showers upon my sunburn'd brain.

  • Invention, Nature's child, fled step-dame Study's blows;
  • And others' feet still seem'd but strangers in my way.

    Poet Born at Penshurst, Kent, he was a poet, a soldier and a courtier. He entered Parliament in 1581 and in 1583 was knighted. In 1585 he was made goversnor of Flushing in the Netherlands, and died at Zutphen, fightning the Spaniards. Among his works are the sonnet sequence Astrophel and Stella Arcadia (1590) considered by many to be the finest of the Elizabethan romances; and the Apologie for Poetrie (1595), the earliest work of English literary criticism. Sidney was remarkable for his strong personal attachments. Chief among his allies were his school-mate and distant relative, Fulke Greville (born in the same year as himself), and his college friend Edward Dyer (also about his own age). He wrote youthful verses to both of them. The following, according to the fashion of the age, are in the form of an invocation to the pastoral god Pan - Only for my two loves' sake,
    In whose love I pleasure take;
    Only two do me delight
    With their ever-pleasing sight;
