Sir Philip Sidney Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) had no equal in Elizabethan England, other than the queen herself, in his combination of intellectual and worldly accomplishments. Sidney was a leading writer of poetry, prose fiction, and literary criticism. As the nephew and heir to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Sidney was an important political figure. Leaders on the Continent, especially in the Netherlands, regarded Sidney as the central figure in a potential pan-European Protestant political and military alliance. Elizabeth herself, however, was wary of Sidney's ambitions, and never gave him a position of great authority. Sidney's early death from a wound received in battle against the troops of his godfather Philip II stunned England, and transformed Sidney into a legendary figure embodying the ideals of the Renaissance.

ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
literature
Sidney, Philip, Sir (1554-1586)
Selections. The Countesse of Pembrokes Arcadia.
London : Imprinted by H.L. for Matthew Lownes, 1623.
Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadia was begun in 1580 and was left incomplete at the time of his death in the Battle of Zutphen. Addressed to his sister, the Countess of Pembroke, it is one of the classic narratives of love and heroism from the late seventeenth century. It contains a mixture of poetry and prose and a subtle political subtext.

SIR PHILIP SIDNEY
The Bargain
MY true love hath my heart, and I have his,
By just exchange one for another given:
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss,
There never was a better bargain driven:
My true love hath my heart, and I have his. His heart in me keeps him and me in one,
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides:
He loves my heart, for once it was his own,
I cherish his because in me it bides:
My true love hath my heart, and I have his.
Song
With fruits of happy sight,
A light which doth dissever
And yet unite the eyes, A light which, dying never, Is cause the looker dies. She never dies, but lasteth He ever dies that wasteth In love his chiefest part: Thus is her life still guarded In never-dying faith; Thus is his death rewarded, Since she lives in his death. Look then, and die! The pleasure Doth answer well the pain: Small loss of mortal treasure, Who may immortal gain! Immortal be her graces

NORFOLK, DUKE OF, THOMAS HOWARD,
Powerful nobleman in the reign of Elizabeth I. He had Catholic sympathies, although denied being a Catholic himself. He married three times, losing each wife in childbirth. He was made a Privy Councillor by Elizabeth, but his relationship with her became more and more difficult as his involvement with Catholic rebels increased. He was pardoned of the conspiracy of 1569, which was intended to see him married to Mary Queen of Scots, and did not suffer too badly after the Northern Rebellion. He was unpopular with Elizabeth's loyal subjects, however, and after another Catholic plot of 1571, the Duke was reluctantly executed by the Queen.
NORRIS, HENRY,
Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII. He was executed on false charges of adultery with Anne Boleyn.
DE VERE, EDWARD, EARL OF OXFORD,
A courtier and theatre patron. He married Anne Cecil, daughter of William Cecil. Many people believe him to have been the secret author of Shakespeare's plays.
PARKER, MATTHEW (1504-1575)
