Children's Literature

Increase Mather
bibliographic record
A survey of children's literature offers a glimpse of what impressionable youngsters were reading and learning, and what their parents and teachers wished to impress upon them. When investigating children's reading matter, however, it is important to remember that, early in our history, books were expensive and generally available only to the well-to-do. The Juvenile Collection contains nearly fifteen thousand children's books, chiefly American. Most of the collection is arranged chronologically. The earliest book, A Course of Sermons on Early Piety . . . by Increase Mather (Boston: S. Kneeland, 1721; BX7233.A1 C6 Juv) was printed in 1721. Significant selections from each year continue through the twentieth century. A section arranged alphabetically by author and title contains the work of thirty-six American authors considered significant, of which fourteen are women. The collection includes many books and serials written for children of both sexes by women authors, fiction written specifically for girls, and instructional and advice books for girls and young women.

Beaver Creek Cemetery is located about three miles west of the small town of Papineau, Illinois, in Iroquois County. It is on a small plot of land adjacent to Beaver Creek, which runs west to the Iroquois River. The cemetery is also referred to as Jones Cemetery, with the name derived from the first family of European-descent to settle in the area. The family of Henry Jones moved to Papineau Township in 1837. The cemetery is a beautiful and peaceful place, surrounded by trees on all sides. But it also hard to find, and even when you know where it is, it can be challenging to get to. So to save you the trouble of trekking out to the Beaver Creek Cemetery, Proof-Genealogy.com is proud to present you with the opportunity to visit its graves virtually. Research began by using the list of graves that was compiled in 1976. Since that time, a few new people have been added to the cemetery, and a few of the stones that existed then have disappeared. The list below includes every person known to be buried in Beaver Creek Cemetery. If you decide to go out to Beaver Creek Cemetery, here are a few tips:

This DVD sells for just $69 at our online store. See the Table of Contents Below
We've been offering books on CD for a couple of years. Now it's time to add books on DVD. Most people associate DVDs with video. But they are just another, very efficient way to store information. These book DVDs do not work in the kind of video DVD players that you hook up to a television set. Rather they work in the DVD drive in a Windows PC and the vast majority of new PCs sold today come with a DVD/CD drive as standard equipment. (Similarly, our book CDs don't work in music CD players, but rather in the CD drive of a Windows PC.) Because the complete text of so many books can fit on a single DVD, we are able to keep the price very low. Our Complete Book CD includes over 7000 books and sells for just $99. That amounts to about a penny and a half a book less than books sold for in the days of Dickens. Designed for ease of use without any need for computer knowledge, this is, by far, our best bargain. The Complete Book DVD includes all the books of the Classic Collection (American Literature, British Literature, World Literature, Children's Books, Non-Fiction, REligion, and Books about Classical Music [just the text files, not the Finale .mus files]), plus Cook Books, plus Victoriana, plus Australian Literature, plus Canadian Literature. The DVD is organized the same way the CDs are with an overall index and a separate directory for each CD, and each of those folders has the same folders as the CD does, as well as the same index as the CD. Whenever we update any of those CDs, we'll immediately update the Complete Book DVD. And if you buy the Complete Book DVD from us, you can buy updates to it with all the books for just $30. (Institutions can buy an update subscriptions four updates over the course of a year for $100.)

Margaret Sidney: The Five Little Peppers and Their Creator Remember Phronsie Pepper and the little brown house in Badgerton? Both were the fictional creations of Harriett Mulford Stone Lothrop, who wrote about the beloved Pepper family under the pseudonym Margaret Sidney.
Born June 22, 1844 in New Haven, Connecticut, Harriett Stone was the daughter of architect Sidney Mason Stone. In 1878 she began sending short stories to Wide Awake , a children's magazine published by Daniel Lothrop. Eventually two stories"Polly Pepper's Chicken Pie" and "Phronsie Pepper's New Shoes"caught the special attention of the editor, who wanted more Pepper stories, and of the publisher himself, who married the author in 1881. That was the same year his company published
