Born in Lancaster, Ohio, he was the son of a judge of the supreme court. However, his father died suddenly in 1829, leaving his widow with a family of young children to raise. William Sherman was then adopted by a family friend, Thomas Ewing, a politician.
Sherman attended West Point military college, where he did very well, and was appointed second lieutenant on graduating. He then fought in Florida against the Seminole Native American Indians and later in the Mexican War.
In 1853 he resigned from the military and spent some years in banking in California before going into business for a short time in New York. He then practiced law in Leavenworth, Kansas, before becoming superintendent of the new Louisiana military college in January 1861. When it became clear that Louisiana would secede from the Union he resigned from his post.
Sherman had a great love of the south and was greatly distressed by the prospect of civil war. His brother, John, loined the Confederates but William was loyal to the Union cause. He turned down the offer of a commission in the Confederate army and offered his services to the Union.

William Tecumseh Sherman on the Palestinians January 15, 2003 W ell, not exactly. General Sherman is one of my boyhood heroes; what I learned in school in New York was that his campaign through the heart of Dixie is what may have ultimately convinced General Lee (strangely enough, another boyhood hero) that prolonging the conflict was not useful. I later discovered, once I lived in the south, that Sherman was not universally admired, but, hey, the winners write the history, sorry about that scorched earth campaign and all that. More to the point, the extract below attributed to Sherman was provided by James H. Fink in a letter published in the July-August 2002 issue of Commentary . Mr. Fink made the direct analogy between the Confederacy, the object, of course, of Sherman's wrath, and the Palestinians:
If they want eternal war, well and good; we accept the issue and will dispossess them and put our friends in their places...Next year, their lands will be taken; for in war we can take them and rightfully too, and in another year they may beg vainly for their lives. Well, that boy could write. There's not much question concerning what he's about. Now, to apply that to the Palestinians, it would seem that Israel won the "occupied territories" in a war that was not of their making, except in the most technical of senses that they struck preemptively. This does not mean that Israel should necessarily keep the West Bank and Gaza; that would be demographic suicide for a Jewish state unless they have the heart and stomach to transfer the Paleos to Egypt and Jordan from Gaza and the West Bank respectively.

Microsoft Encarta identifies a picture of
General Grant as Sherman If the question was asked, "Who was and still is the most hated and despised man in the history of Georgia" the response would be William Tecumseh Sherman. From the onset of hostilities in the Atlanta Campaign on May 6, 1864 and the March to the Sea ending two days before Christmas 1864 with him capturing Savannah, no one created more destruction. As a result of his successful campaign in Georgia, the Confederacy was split in two and deprived of much needed supplies, ending the war quickly with a Union victory. Born on February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, his father died when he was young. Widowed and unable to care for the entire family, his mother sent brother Thomas to be raised by an aunt and William became a foster child to Thomas Ewing, his father's friend. Cump, as he was known, later married Mr. Ewing's daughter, Ellen. Educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he graduated in 1840. During the Mexican War, Sherman was posted in San Francisco. He resigned his commission in 1853 to become a partner in a bank there. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, William Tecumseh Sherman was Superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy at Alexandria, Louisiana. After the war, the school moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became Louisiana State University (LSU). Talk of the secession from the Union was rampant, yet the motto of the seminary was "By the liberality of the General Government of the United States, the Union - esto perpetua." On January 18, 1861, Sherman resigned his position stating that he preferred to maintain his allegiance to the Constitution as long as a fragment of it survived. On the 25th of February, Sherman left Louisiana and returned to Ohio. He remained in Lancaster for a month and then moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri where he was elected President of the Fifth Street Railroad.

William T. Sherman Stamp On June 29,1995, the U.S. Post Office issued a set of 20 commemorative stamps showing 16 individuals and 4 battles of the Civil War. Official first day of issue ceremonies were held in front of the Cyclorama Center at the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. A pictorial cancellation showing a Civil War cannon was available at the ceremony. However, as the Postal Service also released the set of stamps nationwide, numerous unofficial first day of issue cancellations were possible. One of the stamps shows Union Gen. William T. Sherman standing with a pair of field glasses and marching troops in the background. Presumably, the scene portrays Sherman during his Atlanta Campaign or the following March to the Sea. On the back of the stamp is the notation:

Atlanta. Introduced total war-
fare in the March across GA
and through the Carolinas.
Negotiated lenient peace.

General William Tecumseh Sherman
United States General in the American Civil War.
Sherman is remembered for his campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas in which the Northern troops devastated the Southern landscape and resources.
Sherman was born on February 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. After an undistinguished military career he resigned from the army in 1853 to become a partner in a banking firm in San Francisco. He was president of a military college in Alexandria, Louisiana (now Louisiana State University) from 1859 to the beginning of 1861, when Louisiana seceded from the Union. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he offered his services to the Union Army and was put in command of a volunteer infantry regiment, becoming a brigadier general of volunteers after the First Battle of Bull Run . Sherman led a division at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6 and 7, 1862, and was rewarded for his part in the victory by being promoted to major general of volunteers. In December of that year he failed in an attempt to seize the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, on the Mississippi River, but in 1863 he fought under General Ulysses S. Grant

Major General William T. Sherman Federal Army William Tecumseh Sherman was born on May 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. He was a renowned Union general during the U.S. Civil War and was among the first military leaders to recognize and put into practice the methods that became the tenets of modern warfare. At the start of the Civil War the fiery-tempered Sherman was a colonel and commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. When Grant became general in chief, Sherman commanded the large Union army of approximately 100,000 men that moved southeast from Dalton, Ga. Although roundly defeated in rash attacks at Kenesaw Mountain, he captured Atlanta in September 1864 after a long series of cat-and-mouse contests with Joseph E. Johnston. An aggressive leader, Sherman was expert in planning and executing long marches and in mastering difficult logistical problems. Spreading out his army about 50 miles wide, he conducted a scorched-earth campaign against the Confederacy ravaging the unprotected Georgia countryside in the famous March to the Sea (Nov. 16-Dec. 22,1864) that resulted in the capture of Savannah. Agreeing that "War is hell," he nonetheless used the same

Its glory is all moonshine; even success most brilliant is over dead and mangled bodies, with the anguish and lamentations of distant families. You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will.
