William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1840 he graduated from West Point and in 1850 married Ellen Ewing. Sherman was made general of the army in 1869 when Ulysses Grant was inaugurated president. Along with Grant and Robert E. Lee, Sherman is one of the most renowned generals of the Civil War. He retired from active service in 1883 and moved to New York in 1886. Saint-Gaudens modeled a bust of the general in 1888. This bust served as a study for the 1903 equestrian monument to the Civil War leader. Work on the Sherman Monument was begun in 1892 in Saint-Gaudens’ New York studio, continued in Paris, and was finished in Cornish, NH, in 1901. The bronze was cast by Thiebault Brothers in Paris. The setting and pedestal were designed by architect Charles McKim . The monument was unveiled on May 30, 1903, at the entrance to New York’s Central Park. (continued)

Biographical/Historical Sketch
Though William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) never commanded in a major Union victory he remains one of the best known of the Northern commanders. His father died when he was nine years old, and Sherman was raised by Senator Thomas Ewing and eventually married into the family. Through the influence of his patron, he obtained an appointment to West Point. Only five cadets of the class of 1840 graduated ahead of him, and he was appointed to the artillery. He received a brevet for his services in California during the Mexican War but resigned in 1853 as captain and commissary officer.

    WILLIAM T. SHERMAN (1820-1891)
by George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894) A pioneer of modern warfare, William Tecumseh Sherman graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1840. He began his Civil War career as a colonel and, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, became a major general after the Battle of Shiloh. Their success in the Vicksburg and Chattanooga campaigns made them rising stars in the North. Sherman's capture of Atlanta in September 1864 was a major blow to the Confederacy and a significant factor in Lincoln's reelection in November. Sherman then implemented his philosophy of psychological warfare and property destruction by having his army march through Georgia to Savannah. The Gallery's portrait, one of three that are virtually identical, was painted after the war, and belonged to Sherman, who commissioned a pendant portrait of his wife from Healy in 1868. In 1865, shortly after the war ended, Mathew Brady offered to photograph William Tecumseh Sherman along with all of his generals. According to Brady, Sherman doubted that his staff would remain in Washington for the picture, but with characteristic energy the photographer appointed an hour and notified all seven men (Oliver Otis Howard, John A. Logan, William B. Hazen, Jefferson C. Davis, Henry Warner Slocum, Joseph A. Mower, and Francis P. Blair). Blair alone missed the sitting, and he is missing from the first set of photographs, as shown here. But Brady arranged to photograph him separately and added him to later versions of the portrait by pasting Blair's image onto an existing photograph, exhibited here for the first time. Brady then photographed the new, complete picture in order to make a negative that recorded Sherman's entire staff, and used it to print many copies of Sherman and His Generals.
