    Abstract:
One of the challenges that narrators face is the critical reception of their accounts by the audience. While the narrator is inevitably subject to the imaginative and emotive pressures of the narrative material, the audience tends to take a more rational view of the artistic choices the narrator makes in his effort to construct a convincing account. The "aesthetic discrepancy" that seems to exist between narrator and audience leads some listeners to feel that the narrator is lying. Some scholars have questioned the usefulness of such accounts in the construction of a people's history. Okpewho addresses the issue by examining a tale he recorded in Nigeria from the narrator Charles Simayi about a contest between two men for a chieftaincy title. In making himself one of the judges in that contest, Simayi draws misgivings from one of his listeners about Simayi's touted role in the event. Okpewho examines this act of self-insertion against the background of similar evidence in various African countries and elsewhere in the world, and sees in it a narrator who "feels committed enough to the interests of his society to take a subjective stand in interrogating them. What is at play in such narratives is not so much an abstract concept of truth, as the right of the individual to review the facts of historical experience in the context of contemporary realities."

General Grant as Sherman If the question was asked, "Who was and still is the most hated and despised man in the history of Georgia" the response would be William Tecumseh Sherman. From the onset of hostilities in the Atlanta Campaign on May 6, 1864 and the March to the Sea ending two days before Christmas 1864 with him capturing Savannah, no one created more destruction. As a result of his successful campaign in Georgia, the Confederacy was split in two and deprived of much needed supplies, ending the war quickly with a Union victory. Born on February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, his father died when he was young. Widowed and unable to care for the entire family, his mother sent brother Thomas to be raised by an aunt and William became a foster child to Thomas Ewing, his father's friend. Cump, as he was known, later married Mr. Ewing's daughter, Ellen. Educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he graduated in 1840. During the Mexican War, Sherman was posted in San Francisco. He resigned his commission in 1853 to become a partner in a bank there. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, William Tecumseh Sherman was Superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy at Alexandria, Louisiana. After the war, the school moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became Louisiana State University (LSU). Talk of the secession from the Union was rampant, yet the motto of the seminary was "By the liberality of the General Government of the United States, the Union - esto perpetua." On January 18, 1861, Sherman resigned his position stating that he preferred to maintain his allegiance to the Constitution as long as a fragment of it survived. On the 25th of February, Sherman left Louisiana and returned to Ohio. He remained in Lancaster for a month and then moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri where he was elected President of the Fifth Street Railroad.

William T. Sherman Stamp On June 29,1995, the U.S. Post Office issued a set of 20 commemorative stamps showing 16 individuals and 4 battles of the Civil War. Official first day of issue ceremonies were held in front of the Cyclorama Center at the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. A pictorial cancellation showing a Civil War cannon was available at the ceremony. However, as the Postal Service also released the set of stamps nationwide, numerous unofficial first day of issue cancellations were possible. One of the stamps shows Union Gen. William T. Sherman standing with a pair of field glasses and marching troops in the background. Presumably, the scene portrays Sherman during his Atlanta Campaign or the following March to the Sea. On the back of the stamp is the notation:

William Tecumseh Sherman
Its glory is all moonshine; even success most brilliant is over dead and mangled bodies, with the anguish and lamentations of distant families. You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out.

History of the United States Upper Deck - 2004 Notes: The 300-card base set includes twelve individually-numbered subsets. Note that it is impossible to complete a base set from a single box, and you have to be lucky to do so from two boxes. There are a few mis-markings of the subsets on the cards, but the card numbers accurately place the cards in sequence. The box-topper coin cards are packaged in their own wrapper. hoffmaster007 reports (thanks!) that the original plan only went up to SQ22, but when the series was delayed, very limited numbers of quarters numbered 23-27 were inserted, and these cards are quite scarce. The Upper Deck website shows images of quarter-cards up to SQ30, and thus I wonder if we'll see another "wave" of these cards. Box: 18 packs of 10 cards. Common sets (300): approx. 0.54 per box if collation were perfect. No. Title Year(s)
