A city in east-central Ohio in September will celebrate Army Gen. William T. Sherman and the 125th anniversary of his ``War is hell'' speech. The events will be Sept. 23-25, mostly in Lancaster in Fairfield County, the birth place of the Union Civil War general who marched in 1864 from Atlanta to Savannah through the heart of the Confederacy. The celebration will include nationally recognized scholars and authors and hundreds of re-enactors portraying notable Ohioans and key Civil War figures. There will be a Civil War tea and fashion show and history walks featuring a Civil War encampment. There will also be a Sept. 23 opening dinner at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. The speaker will be Dr. Richard McMurry, a Civil War author and historian. Re-enactors will portray Sherman and Ohio's own President Rutherford B. Hayes. Sherman (1820-1891) delivered his famous speech on Aug. 11, 1880, at the Civil War Soldiers' Reunion at the Ohio State Fairgrounds (now the Columbus Park Conservatory). ``The war is away back in the past and you can tell what books cannot. When you talk, you come down to practical realities, just as they happened.... There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but boys, it is all hell. You can bear this warning voice to generations yet to come. I look upon war with horror; but if it has to come, I am here,'' Sherman told 10,000 Civil War veterans.

William T. Sherman, Personal Memoirs of Gen'l W. T. Sherman
[Following the defeat at Bull Run, a militia captain demanded an immediate discharge from Colonel Sherman. Sherman turned him down, lest his example be followed by hundreds of enlisted men. Later that day, the captain tried complaining directly to President Lincoln, then visiting the troops. The President, however, had already developed a respect for Sherman, and was too cagy to be drawn.]
[The militia captain] "forced his way through the crowd to the carriage, and said: 'Mr President, I have a cause of grievance. This morning I went to speak to Colonel Sherman, and he threatened to shoot me.'
Mr. Lincoln, who was still standing, said, 'Threatened to shoot you?'
'Yes, sir, he threatened to shoot me.'
Mr. Lincoln looked at him, than at me [Sherman], and stooping his tall, spare form toward the officer, said to him in a loud stage-whisper, easily heard for some yards around: 'Well, if I were you, and he threatened to shoot, I would not trust him, for I believe he would do it.' The officer turned about and disappeared, and the men laughed at him."

The albumen photographs presented below are examples taken from an album of prominent Americans made during Civil War. The album is thought to have been assembled by John Hay (1838-1905), a personal secretary to Abraham Lincoln during the years 1861 to 1865. The thumbnail images link to higher resolution images at the Library where the contents of the album are presented in its entirety. The digital facsimiles and formatting for the world wide web were prepared by the Library as part of the American Memory Project . The Library's presentation of the album includes a brief essay on the history of cartes de visites and the origins of the Hay album as well as an index of photographers and sitters represented in the album. In time we hope to present a searchable database based on the album compiled by Andrew Robb, Conservator of Photographs at the Library . Of the many conceivable queries, this database would allow dating cards by back-printing. Click the thumbnails for a higher resolution image Sitter Beauregard, G. T. (Gustave Toutant), 1818-1893

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Sherman, William Tecumseh (1820-1891), United States general in the American Civil War (1861-1865). Sherman is remembered for his campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas in which the Northern troops devastated the Southern landscape and resources. Sherman was born on February 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. After an undistinguished military career he resigned from the army in 1853 to become a partner in a banking firm in San Francisco. He was president of a military college in Alexandria , Louisiana (now Louisiana State University) from 1859 to the beginning of 1861, when Louisiana seceded from the Union. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he offered his services to the Union Army and was put in command of a volunteer infantry regiment, becoming a brigadier general of volunteers after the First Battle of Bull Run. Sherman led a division at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6 and 7, 1862, and was rewarded for his part in the victory by being promoted to major general of volunteers. In December of that year he failed in an attempt to seize the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, on the Mississippi River, but in 1863 he fought under General

(15 linear feet) Winterthur Manuscripts Group 9 Hagley Museum and Library P.O. Box 3630 Wilmington, DE 19807-0630 Table of contents Abstract Samuel Francis Du Pont (1803-1865) was a career naval officer who commanded the South Atlantic Squadron for the Union during the Civil War. His papers include personal and naval correspondence and journals describing his voyages.
Background note Scope and content Administrative information Background note: Samuel Francis Du Pont spent his early years living at Louviers, across the river from his uncle's Eleutherian Mills estate. At the age of nine he was enrolled in the Mt. Airy Academy in Germantown, Pennsylvania. However, Victor's woolen mill was facing serious financial difficulties, and he was not in a position to underwrite his son's education. He, therefore, encouraged him to pursue a career in the Navy. Du Pont de Nemours sought Jefferson's help in securing a position for his grandson. With this influence, it was not surprising that on December 19, 1815, the twelve year old Samuel Francis received an appointment as midshipman. He continued studying at Mt. Airy until October 1817, when he set sail on the U.S.S. Franklin

Major General William T. Sherman Federal Army William Tecumseh Sherman was born on May 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. He was a renowned Union general during the U.S. Civil War and was among the first military leaders to recognize and put into practice the methods that became the tenets of modern warfare. At the start of the Civil War the fiery-tempered Sherman was a colonel and commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. When Grant became general in chief, Sherman commanded the large Union army of approximately 100,000 men that moved southeast from Dalton, Ga. Although roundly defeated in rash attacks at Kenesaw Mountain, he captured Atlanta in September 1864 after a long series of cat-and-mouse contests with Joseph E. Johnston. An aggressive leader, Sherman was expert in planning and executing long marches and in mastering difficult logistical problems. Spreading out his army about 50 miles wide, he conducted a scorched-earth campaign against the Confederacy ravaging the unprotected Georgia countryside in the famous March to the Sea (Nov. 16-Dec. 22,1864) that resulted in the capture of Savannah. Agreeing that "War is hell," he nonetheless used the same

Keyword searches compare a word or set of words against information in OCC database. The name of each search will tell you what types of information the search will use. For instance, a Title keyword search on "Riders" or "Sage" will bring back "Riders of the Purple Sage" as well as any other title that contain "Riders," "Sage" or both. These types of searches work best when you know partly what you want but not all, such as a few words of the title of a painting. Keyword searches are also useful when you are unsure of what OHS hold in a particular area. What will the Archives/Library Subject Keyword Search do? The Archives/Library Subject Keyword Search will check your text against a list of approved subject headings. You need not worry about entering the exact heading. The system has the ability to connect your heading with the ones the Archives/Library uses. You will notice these listed as "See" references. For archival, library, manuscript or audiovisual material, it will return information on authors, agencies, editors or other people or companies related to making and/or collecting of the material. For museum objects, the search will return information about owners, manufacturers, makers, collectors and/or other people historically related to the objects.
