SHERMAN, WILLIAM TECUMSEH (1820-1891). William Tecumseh Sherman, United States Army officer, was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on February 8, 1820, the son of Charles Robert and Mary (Hoyt) Sherman. His father was a justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. With the death of the elder Sherman in 1829, William became the ward of Senator Thomas Ewing, secretary of the treasury in the William Henry Harrison and John Tyler administrations and secretary of the interior in the Zachary Taylor qv administration. With Ewing's influence, Sherman was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1836; he graduated sixth in his class and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Third Artillery in Florida on July 1, 1840. On November 30, 1840, he was promoted to first lieutenant. During the Mexican War qv he was avid to be stationed in Texas, where he pledged "most heartily . . . [to] give all the aid I can to further the views of the Government to extend the `Area of Freedom,'" but was sent instead to California, where he received a brevet promotion to captain on May 30, 1848. After the war he served as adjutant general of the Division of the Pacific, and on May 1, 1850, after an engagement of seven years, he married the daughter of his guardian, the socially prominent Eleanor Boyle Ewing; the couple had eight children. On September 6, 1853, Sherman resigned from the army to pursue the banking business in San Francisco. The firm for which he worked failed in 1857, however, and he turned first to the practice of law in Leavenworth, Kansas, and after experiencing failure there in 1859 to the superintendency of the Louisiana Seminary of Learning and Military Academy in Pineville (now Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge).

WILLIAM T. SHERMAN (1820-1891)
by George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894) A pioneer of modern warfare, William Tecumseh Sherman graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1840. He began his Civil War career as a colonel and, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, became a major general after the Battle of Shiloh. Their success in the Vicksburg and Chattanooga campaigns made them rising stars in the North. Sherman's capture of Atlanta in September 1864 was a major blow to the Confederacy and a significant factor in Lincoln's reelection in November. Sherman then implemented his philosophy of psychological warfare and property destruction by having his army march through Georgia to Savannah. The Gallery's portrait, one of three that are virtually identical, was painted after the war, and belonged to Sherman, who commissioned a pendant portrait of his wife from Healy in 1868. Oil on canvas, 1866

The Civil War Zone

William T. Sherman
United States of America
Birthplace: Lancaster, Ohio
Senior Command: Western Department, 1864

Sherman's admirers rate him perhaps the outstanding Federal commander of the Civil War. His masterly marches of 1864-65 carried Union forces a thousand miles, from Chattanooga through Georgia and the Carolinas to the southern reaches of Lee's Virginiacampaigns of maneuver that doomed the main Confederate army around Richmond and hastened the collapse of the rebellion.
The son of a jurist, prominent in his home state, he was orphaned at the age of nine and raised by a well-to-do friend of his parents', Thomas Ewing. He received his early education at a local academy, entered West Point in 1836, and graduated four years later, a solid sixth in his class.
Entering the army as an artillery second lieutenant, Sherman saw service in Florida and in California during the Mexican War. Garrison and survey duty in South Carolina and Georgia provided unwitting preparation for his later career, when his troops would credit him with a virtually encyclopedic knowledge of every road, path and byway in the two rebel states.
For the most part, though army life dull and unchallenging. Bored and frustrated by the slow pace of promotion, he resigned in 1853 to become a banker. Like many soldiers of his era, he knew little success in Civil life. He failed at banking, then turned to the law. He lost his only case.

William Tecumseh Sherman was born in 1820 and died in 1891. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio. Before the war he was superintendent of a military school in Los Angeles. He was part of the Union army, and he was a general in the Civil War. He was remembered for the "March To The Sea." After the war he wrote his memories. Both political parties begged him to run for President, but he said no.

During the early 1920's between one and two dozen Osage Indians were murdered or simply "disappeared" from their oil-rich lands in northeastern Oklahoma. As wards of the federal government, their special status brought investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation who met fear and suspicion from the Osage and friendly whites alike. Despite the difficulties, the FBI, under the young director J. Edgar Hoover, avidly pursued the murderers and eventually secured life-term convictions in what became one of its most celebrated cases. Compelling source material can be found here concerning the Osage people, Oklahoma, early 20th century politics and law enforcement.

    Historical note:
The Soldiers and Sailors Historical Society of Rhode Island was founded circa 1875. Its mission was to preserve and disseminate the history of the Civil War. While the Rhode Island Historical Society had already been active for over fifty years, it had a more antiquarian focus at the time, and a separate society for the Civil War was deemed necessary. Full members were required to be Civil War veterans. At the monthly meetings of the Society, papers were read by members, describing battles and campaigns. The Society also developed a small library for use of its members. In 1878, it began publishing the papers read at its meetings, under the title Personal Narratives of the Battles of the Rebellion . These were published in seven series of about 12 small pamphlets each, and continued through 1915. These publications now constitute a major resource for those interested in the role Rhode Island played in the Civil War.
