SHERMAN, WILLIAM TECUMSEH
, Civil War general. Second in importance only to Ulysses S. Grant among Union generals of the Civil War, Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio. Orphaned by the death of his father in 1829, he was raised in the home of a neighbor, Thomas Ewing. After graduating from West Point in 1840, he was assigned to various garrisons in the South before serving in the Mexican War. He resigned from the army in 1853 to pursue a banking career in San Francisco, but the collapse of his bank in the commercial panic of 1857 and an unsatisfactory stint as a lawyer in Kansas convinced Sherman to return to the military. He became the superintendent of the state military academy in Alexandria, Louisiana. When that state seceded from the Union in January 1861, Sherman resigned and rejoined the U.S. Army as a colonel. Sherman's Atlanta campaign in May to September 1864 won the Confederate prize that ensured Lincoln's reelection that year. Sherman ordered a civilian evacuation of Atlanta, burned everything of any military value, and in November headed out of the city on his famous "march to the sea." More than any other Civil War commander, Sherman grasped the brutal logic of total war. In such a war, civilian morale and economic resources are just as much military targets as the enemy's armies. For Sherman, war unleashed the fury of hell, and he refused to sentimentalize the killing and pillaging required for victory. After capturing Savannah on December 21, 1864, he swung his army north and led another devastating march through the Carolinas. On April 26, 1865, Gen. Joseph Johnston, the commander of the last major Confederate army in the East after Lee's capitulation at Appomattox, surrendered to Sherman in North Carolina.

Address by William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) Presented in Salem, Illinois, on July 4, 1866
Researched by James R. Heintze. American University, Washington, D.C.
Editor's note: General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) fought in the Civil War for the Union and is perhaps best remembered for his invasion of Georgia when he captured Atlanta (September 1864) and commenced his "March to the Sea," finally taking Savannah (December). Sherman's army of 60,000 men pillaged and destroyed everything within a 60-mile wide swath of land, 300 miles in length. Although the march was largely unopposed and helped bring the war to a close, the general's tactics were loathed by many. The significance of Sherman's speech below is the explanation he gives as to why he felt compelled to adopt this military tactic. Notice Sherman's comment, "I know there are parties that denounce me as inhuman," voiced before this mostly friendly crowd. Perhaps he was concerned about his legacy in history, given the disfavor of his name in the South, and that this speech was more of an address to the nation than just the residents of Salem. Approximately 25,000 persons were there to hear his speech which he presented on a wooden platform having a backdrop of "tattered battle-flags of various Illinois regiments and mottoes complimentary to General Sherman, Governor Oglesby, and General Logan." In addition, Col. E., N. Bates, of Centralia, read the Declaration of Independence and General John Alexander Logan (1826-1886), Union general and U.S. senator, also gave a speech that day.

Synopsis
Nearly ten years have passed since the close of the civil war in America, and yet no satisfactory history thereof is accessible to the public; nor should any be attempted until the Government has published, and placed within the reach of students, the abundant materials that are buried in the War Department at Washington. These are in process of compilation; but, at the rate of progress for the past ten years, it is probable that a new century will come before they are published and circulated, with full indexes to enable the historian to make a judicious selection of materials...

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1840 he graduated from West Point and in 1850 married Ellen Ewing. Sherman was made general of the army in 1869 when Ulysses Grant was inaugurated president. Along with Grant and Robert E. Lee, Sherman is one of the most renowned generals of the Civil War. He retired from active service in 1883 and moved to New York in 1886. Saint-Gaudens modeled a bust of the general in 1888. This bust served as a study for the 1903 equestrian monument to the Civil War leader. Work on the Sherman Monument was begun in 1892 in Saint-Gaudens’ New York studio, continued in Paris, and was finished in Cornish, NH, in 1901. The bronze was cast by Thiebault Brothers in Paris. The setting and pedestal were designed by architect Charles McKim . The monument was unveiled on May 30, 1903, at the entrance to New York’s Central Park. (continued)

classmate, General Joseph E. Johnston, to make overtures for surrender. The liberal terms which Sherman proposed were accepted by Johnston but rejected in a Washington embittered by the recent assassination of Lincoln and they earned for Sherman the hostile criticism of Secretary of War Stanton and radical Northern newspapers. Nevertheless, he emerged from the War, along with Ulysses S. Grant and the Philip H. Sheridan, as one of the North's three most famous heroes. After the termination of hostilities, Sherman remained in the army and proceeded to St. Louis where he took over command of the Division of the Mississippi. Offered a cabinet post as Secretary of War by President Johnson in January, 1868, he declined despite his sympathy for Johnson in the latter's difficulties. Upon Grant's inauguration as President, Sherman, on Mar. 4, 1869, assumed command of the army, a post he retained until his retirement from active service. As commanding general, in addition to the normal duties of the office, he was forced continually to do battle with politicians eager to reduce the peacetime army to a strength which he considered incompatible with national security.

On War
  • War is Hell. (repeated in various contexts) You people of the South don't know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don't know what you're talking about. War is a terrible thing! War is the remedy our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want. I would make this war as severe as possible, and show no symptoms of tiring till the South begs for mercy. Hold the fort! I am coming!
