Treasury, Fed. Reserve Notes, Gold Certs. - Lots 167-203 Treasury or Coin Notes Among later issues of United States currency, none is more admired or more desired than the Treasury or Coin Notes, Series of 1890 and Series of 1891. These notes-similar to the Silver Certificates-related to the flood of Morgan silver dollars minted by the Treasury beginning in 1878. The idea was to create paper money to give out instead of the silver dollars, the latter not being popular anywhere except in certain mountainous areas of the American West. However, by 1890 the supplies of silver purchased under the Bland-Allison Act of February 28, 1878, were running low, and it was not certain how many more silver dollars would be minted. Hence, these particular currency notes are payable in coin, but not specifically in silver dollars. Not to worry, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act (1890) and the Trade Dollar Redemption Act (1891) made it possible to coin millions more of George T. Morgan's prodigies. Soon, Silver Certificates were made again-and in prodigious quantities. The Treasury or Coin Notes were payable in unspecified coin, unlike the Gold or Silver Certificates which were obligated in gold coins and silver dollars, respectively. The Department of the Treasury could pay either gold or silver coins at its discretion. At this time the future supply of silver dollars was somewhat uncertain, although the Sherman Silver Purchase Act (1890) and other legislation (such as the melting of trade dollars for their bullion) eventually produced enough of the metal to coin silver dollars through 1904.

SHAARAWI, Imam Sheikh Mohamed Metwalli el- (1911- ) Egyptian religious leader - Born on 15 April 1911 in Dakadous village, Ghamr town, Dakahlia province, he entered Al-Azhar after he had mastered the Koran in the village kuttab or elementary school. He obtained an El-Aalamia certificate in 1941 from faculty of Arabic language and then El-Alamia certificate with a teaching license in 1943. He awarded the state certificate in 1988 and he proceeded gradually in his work until he reached the position of Minister of Religion Endowments. He was an Imam of industrious interpreters and he enriched the Arab library with various books and publications which interpret the Koran in an unprecedented modern method. His most famous publications are Greater Fatawa (Formal Legal Opinions) book and also Grace of the Merciful in the Miracle of the Koran. He was not only the Imam of his age in interpretation, but also a pioneer and an Islamic thinker who captured easily the people's hearts. He was a modest ascetic and the people put him in the rank of outstanding Imams . His popularity was not confined to Egypt , but his impact extended to Arab and Islamic countries where he was honored as : Islamic Character for the Hegira year 1418; an award by Emirates President Sheikh Zayed "Zayed Medal" of first grade for his charitable efforts in serving Islam; and by the Islamic World league, Mecca, Saudi Arabia as a member at its constituent organization. - Egypt EGY1998H30 SHACKLETON, Ernest Henry

Philip Henry Sheridan
At the beginning of the war, Philip Sheridan served in Missouri as a quartermaster, a post he disliked. But with his appointment as colonel of the Second Michigan Cavalry in May 1862, Sheridan began a series of important victories that proved his daring in battle, leading Lincoln to observe, "This Sheridan is a little Irishman, but he is a big fighter." In the summer of 1864, Sheridan oversaw the ruthless destruction of the Shenandoah Valley, eliminating the Confederate army's major source of food and supplies. That fall, General Sheridan rode more than twenty miles to rally his troops to victory after a surprise enemy attack, a courageous feat that became the subject of many patriotic prints and paintings. Brady photographed Sheridan in 1864, around the time he assumed command of the cavalry for the Army of the Potomac. Mathew Brady Studio

US MILITARY COMMANDERS IN THE WEST
Although Indian affairs were transferred to the civilian authorities in 1849 the military continued to play an important role in US-Indian relations for most of the remaining part of the 19th century, especially in the territory West of the Mississippi, where the army was in charge of the pacification of the Indian nations, their relocation into reservations and the quelling of possible ensuing revolts. (1) (1) Usually the tragedy of Wounded Knee in 1890 is considered as the end of these so-called "Indian Wars" (actually a cycle of raids, counterraids and skirmishes, the only real battle being that of the Little Big Horn in 1876) This is not fully correct as local resistance continued for many years and it perhaps are the three "Ute Wars" - in fact no more than some local skirmishes - of 1915, 1921 and 1923 which should actually be considered as the final act of traditional Indian resistance. MILITARY DIVISION OF THE MISSOURI (information given until 1890, the year of Wounded Knee) The Military Division of the Missouri was established in 1865, abolished the same year but already restored in 1866. In 1890 it included : - the Department of Dakota incorporating : - the States of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and parts of the States of Idaho and South Dakota - the
