Philip Sheridan
Philip Henry Sheridan was born into a family of newly arrived Irish immigrants. The location of his birth is uncertain, but most authorities believe it was in Albany, New York, where the family lived for a short while before moving west. Some have argued for Boston, the family's port of entry, and others for Somerset, Ohio, where Sheridan grew up. All three were claimed as his birthplace by Sheridan at various points in his life. Through the auspices of a family friend, Sheridan secured an appointment to West Point. He was suspended a year for attacking a fellow cadet with a bayonet, but managed to graduate in 1853. He had been an undistinguished student. Sheridan’s early assignments were at frontier posts in Texas and Oregon. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he served as a supply officer in the western theater under General Henry Halleck. In May 1862, Sheridan received command of the 2nd Michigan Volunteers, his first field assignment. Sheridan almost immediately demonstrated his quick wits. In July 1862 in Booneville, Mississippi, he managed by subterfuge to preclude a potentially devastating attack by a larger Confederate force. Sheridan arranged for a portion of his contingent to be hauled into town on a train, a maneuver readily observed by the enemy. Those very Union soldiers were then silently marched through a forest to a point on the rail line outside of town, where they reboarded the train and rode back into Booneville. The appearance was one of massive reinforcement.

Name: Philip Henry Sheridan Birth Date: March 6, 1831 Death Date: August 5, 1888 Place of Birth: Albany, New York, United States Place of Death: Nonquitt, Massachusetts, United States Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: soldier Philip Henry Sheridan Main Biography Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888), American soldier, was noted for his part in the 1864-1865 Virginia campaigns of the Civil War. Philip H. Sheridan was born in Albany, N.Y., on March 6, 1831, the son of Irish immigrant parents who soon moved to Somerset, Ohio. At the age of 14 he went to work as a store clerk. Inspired by the Mexican War, he secured an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1848. A year's disciplinary suspension delayed his graduation until 1853. Tours of duty in California and Oregon made him into a military jack-of-all-trades and doubtless helped him develop self-reliance and resourcefulness. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Sheridan received a captaincy in the 13th Infantry, and after several irksome administrative assignments he was made colonel of the 2d Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. After duty in northern Mississippi he was promoted on July 1, 1862, to brigadier general. Shifted soon afterward to the infantry, he competently commanded a division during the western campaigns.

At the beginning of the war, Philip Sheridan served in Missouri as a quartermaster, a post he disliked. But with his appointment as colonel of the Second Michigan Cavalry in May 1862, Sheridan began a series of important victories that proved his daring in battle, leading Lincoln to observe, "This Sheridan is a little Irishman, but he is a big fighter." In the summer of 1864, Sheridan oversaw the ruthless destruction of the Shenandoah Valley, eliminating the Confederate army's major source of food and supplies. That fall, General Sheridan rode more than twenty miles to rally his troops to victory after a surprise enemy attack, a courageous feat that became the subject of many patriotic prints and paintings. Brady photographed Sheridan in 1864, around the time he assumed command of the cavalry for the Army of the Potomac.

Philip Henry Sheridan, 1831-1888
Major General Philip Henry Sheridan Philip Henry Sheridan, 1831-1888, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was a lieutenant. Eventually, he became the colonel of the 2nd Michigan Cavalry. In 1862, he was promoted to major general of volunteers. In 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant made him the commander of all the cavalry forces in the Army of the Potomac. Sheridan performed well in the war. One of his most famous victories was the battle of Five Forks. It was there that he defeated Major General George Pickett, causing Confederate General Robert E. Lee to abandon Richmond, Virginia and retreat towards Appomattox where he surrendered.
After the Civil War, Sheridan was given a command of American troops along the U.S.- Mexican border and also served as military governor of Texas and Louisiana. President Andrew Johnston, believing him to be too strict a governor, removed him from office and gave him the command of the Department of Missouri. By 1884, Sheridan was the commander-in-chief of the entire U.S. Army. He died in 1888, not long after he was appointed the rank of general. Back to the Main Page

ABOUT THE SONS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was a creation of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) which was formed in 1866. Wanting to pass on its heritage, the GAR in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania created a Corps of Cadets in 1878 which later became the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America (SV). This latter organization was formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1881. The SV units functioned much as National Guard units and actually served along with state militia during the Spanish American War. In 1904, the SV elected to become a patriotic education society and in 1925 changed its name to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). However, to keep the military aspect alive, the SUVCW created within the organization the Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) which was carried on the Army rolls as a Reserve contingent. Some SVR units served with the Army during World War I. After World War I, the SVR was listed as a training company of the U.S. Army. In more recent years, the SVR's mission has become historic, ceremonial, and commemorative. Prior to disbanding and before the death of its last member, the GAR officially designated the SUVCW as its successor and heir to its remaining property. On August 20, 1954, the SUVCW was officially incorporated by an Act of Congress by the passing of Public Law 605 of the second session of the 83rd Congress.
