Biography of Mary Shelley (1797-1851)
Mary Shelley The first meeting between Godwin and Wollstonecraft took place at a dinner party at Godwin's home. Drawn to each other by virtue of their shared philosophical beliefs, the two began an affair begun in the autumn of 1796. When Mary discovered that she was pregnant, the couple decided to marry in order to legitimate both of Mary's children. The couple, however, in adherence to their enlightened views, continued to live and work independently. The pair remained devoted to each other, and Godwin was devastated when Wollstonecraft died shortly after the birth of their daughter, Mary. Although he was fond of his daughters, the task of raising them alone proved too much for Godwin, and he immediately set about finding a second wife. His proposal to Maria Reveley, who would later become Mary's best friend, was rejected. He later married Mary Jane Clairmont, the first woman to respond to his overtures. This second wife proved to be a cruel, shallow woman who neglected Fanny and Mary in favor of her own children. Mary (who was so lively that her father had nicknamed her Mercury) was frequently whipped for impertinence; rebellion came naturally to the headstrong Mary, and she refused to be subdued. Though the girls were given lessons in domesticity (cooking, cleaning, and other wifely duties) Mary could not feign interest in such pursuits: she would simply take up a book and let the dinner burn. Her father was the most important person in her life, and his favor meant everything to her. She excelled in her lessons and could hold her own in adult conversation ? often with the great minds of her time ? from a remarkably early age. Around the age of eight, she began reading the writings of her mother. By the time she was ten, she had memorized every word.

Victor Frankenstein, while a student at the university in Ingolstadt, Germany, becomes obsessed with his ambition to create life as an addition to scientific knowledge. His success leads to the making of a monster the sight of whom fills him with "breathless horror and disgust". Throughout the rest of the novel Frankenstein is haunted by the specter of what he has accomplished while the monster tries to make a place for himself in a cruel world. When Frankenstein refuses to create a mate for him, the monster embarks on a rampage of revenge. After Frankenstein is deprived of all whom he loved, he hunts the monster to the icy desolation of the Arctic to destroy that which he has wrought. Victor tells his story of horror and terror to Robert Walton, the captain of the ship which rescues him in the Arctic. Frankenstein's ensuing death and the monster's grief inspired vow to destroy himself bring this gothic novel to a close.

Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley was a prominent writer of the Romantic Era. Her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft, an influential feminist writer, her father, philosopher and novelist William Godwin, and her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. From an early age she was considered special, and spent her formative years surrounded by poets and philosophers. When she was sixteen, she ran away to live with Percy Shelley, an unhappily married man. Though shunned by society, this union inspired her to write her most famous work, FRANKENSTEIN, a masterpiece of Gothic literature. She conceived the novel at the age of nineteen, while staying with Byron, Shelley and several of their friends in Switzerland, and overwhelmed by a series of tragedies in her life. When Mary Shelley was twenty-four, her husband (they had married after Shelley’s wife committed suicide) died, leaving her alone with a small son. She moved back to England, where she was despised and lived in poverty, working as a writer to support herself. Mary Shelley died of a brain tumor in 1851 – that same year the Great Exhibition, a showcase of the same technological knowledge she had warned against in her novel, was opened.

Mary Shelley 1797 1851. Mary Shelley Mary Shelley Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley sfirst novel, Frankenstein is probably the most well known science fiction
http://www.avdistrict.org/library/authorshelley.html
Mary Shelley 1797 - 1851
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's first novel, Frankenstein is probably the most well known science fiction novel ever written. The name of the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, is used today to describe irresponsible use of science and technology and everyone knows that a Frankenstein Movie is a certain type of horror film. But it is that basic theme of Man preempting God's work which marks it out as the first true work of science fiction and it is considered a masterpiece of writing. Her Life: Mary Shelley was born in London on August 30th 1797. She never knew her famous feminist mother, Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary Wollstonecraft died from a fever only 10 days after giving birth to Mary Shelley. Mary never received any formal education. She learned to read from Louisa Jones, her father, and his wife, and followed her father's advice that the proper way to study was to read two or three books at the same time. Luckily, she had access to her father's excellent library, and to the political, philosophical, scientific, or literary conversations that he conducted with famous visitors such as William Wordsworth, Charles Lamb, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. One example is when, on 24 August 1806, Mary and Jane hid under the parlor sofa to hear Coleridge recite The Rime of the Ancient Mariner , a poem which later haunted Frankenstein Much of Mary's young teen years resembles a soap opera. In 1813, at age sixteen, Mary eloped to France with the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, for which Mary's father temporarily disowned her.  In 1816, Shelley's first wife, Harriet, whom he had abandoned for Mary, drowned herself in the Serpentine River.  Mary and Percy married days after Harriet's body, pregnant with Shelley's unborn child, was discovered. The Shelleys moved to the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, and there formed a literary circle that included George Gordon, Lord Byron. The group regularly held all-night discourses on scientific and supernatural topics.
