British writer best known for the Gothic novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus (1818). She married Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1816. Encyclopedia Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft, 1797–1851, English author; daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft . In 1814 she fell in love with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley , accompanied him abroad, and after the death of his first wife in 1816 was married to him. Her most notable contribution to literature is her novel of terror, Frankenstein, published in 1818. It is the story of a German student who learns the secret of infusing life into inanimate matter and creates a monster that ultimately destroys him. Included among her other novels are Valperga The Last Man (1826), and the partly autobiographical Lodore (1835). After Shelley's death in 1822, she devoted herself to caring for her aged father and educating her only surviving child, Percy Florence Shelley. In 1839–40 she edited her husband's works.

ary Wollstonecraft Godwin was born on 30 August 1797, the daughter of eminent parents . Her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, was the foremost feminist thinker of her generation, remembered today for her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman , a passionate plea for state- regulated education for girls. She laid the utmost stress on female independence. Mary's father, William Godwin, was a radical political philosopher and novelist (he wrote both Political Justice and Caleb Williams ). Mary's parents adhered to revolutionary principles both in politics and in their private lives, but in spite of despising the institution of marriage they took the step after all to facilitate Mary's entrance into society. However, Mary Wollstonecraft died ten days after the birth of her daughter from puerperal fever. Her daughter from an affair with Gerald Imlay, Fanny, lived with William Godwin and his new-born child. Before her marriage to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley , despite the fact that she had grown up without ever knowing her birth mother Mary always referred to herself as "Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin." After her marriage, she dropped the "Godwin," but hung on to her mother's name, signing her letters "MWS."

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851)
M ary Wollstonecraft Shelley was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, the wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley , and the author of one of the most widely read and often redacted novels of the past two centuries. Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus was born out of a series of conversations she had during the summer of 1816 with Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Dr. John Polidori. Mary cites conversations between Shelley and Byron about Erasmus Darwin ("they talked about the experiments of Dr. Darwin ") and Luigi Galvani ("perhaps a corpse would be re-animated; galvanism had given token of such things") as sources for her own idea of a reanimated human ("perhaps the component parts of a creature might be manufactured, brought together, and endued with vital warmth") in her introduction to the 1831 edition of the novel (first edition 1818). When asked to explain why he has created a monstrous life form (one that would eventually destroy him), Mary's Victor Frankenstein offers an explanation based on the concept of "species." "A new species would bless me as its creator," he says to Captain Walton in the opening pages of the novel. Mary clearly sees this attempt to create life as connected to the creation of a species. Of course, Victor does not really create a new species at all; he creates a hybrid, a human being composed of the parts of other humans and other animals, since some of his raw materials come from the "slaughterhouse." Mary's creature presumably lacks a soul, at least in the minds of most of her 1818 readers. But when Victor considers the "race of demons" that might populate the world if he goes through with his plan to create a female companion for the "wretch," he clearly places

Mary Shelley, 1797-1851 Mary Shelley was born in London. Her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, died ten days after giving birth to her. She was one of the first feminists and her father was the writer and political journalist William Godwin, who became famous with some revolutionary works and attitudes to most social institutions, including marriage. In her childhood Mary Shelley was left to educate herself amongst her father's intellectual circle. In 1813, at the age of 16, she met Percy Bysshe Shelley, who came into Godwin's circle, and she ran away to France and Switzerland with him. They married in 1816 and their first child, a daughter, died in Venice, Italy, a few years later. The story of Frankenstein started on summer in 1816 when Mary joined with Percy Shelley and Claire Clairmont near Geneva. She took a challenge to write the most frightening ghost story and, with her husband's encouragement, she completed the novel within a year. Mary Shelley (1797-1851)
    Biographical note
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an English writer who is most famously remembered as the author of Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus Mary Shelley was born in London, England to Mary Wollstonecraft and the atheist William Godwin. She married the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1816 after the suicide of his first wife. She began work on Frankenstein in 1816 when staying at Lord Byron's villa on Lake Geneva in Switzerland. She incorporated a number of different sources into her work, not the least being the Promethean myth from Ovid. The influence of John Milton 's Paradise Lost can also be discerned within the novel. Mary edited and annotated her husband's works after his death in 1822 and also wrote a few more novels, none of which even begin to approach the fame and lasting power of Frankenstein with the possible exception of The Last Man , an intelligent novel of the distant future.
