GEORGE BERNARD SHAW
AUTHOR Shaw was born at 3 Upper Synge Street, Dublin, on 26th July 1856. His mother, a fine mezzo-soprano, left her drunkatd husband to follow her singing teacher to London. In 1876, Shaw gave up his job in an estate agency and joined her. A small legacy enabled him to write five novels over the next few years, but with little success. He was converted to socialism (and vegetarianism) and joined the Fabian Society, forcing himself to become a public speaker. In 1885, a fellow Fabian persuaded The Pall Mall Gazette to employ Shaw as a book reviewer; he also became a notable music critic for The Star His first play was Widowers' Houses (1892), and thereafter he wrote prolifically. Early plays such as Arms and the Man and Candida displayed intellectual wit, but his first real success was the American run of The Devil's Disciple (1897). In 1898, he married Charlotte Payne-Townshend, a rich Anglo-Irish Fabian who had nursed him through illness. In 1906, they moved to Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire.

  • Born: 26 July 1856 Birthplace: Dublin, Ireland Died: 2 November 1950 (natural causes) Best Known As: The author of Pygmalion
Shaw was a successful playwright and famous literary personality of the early 20th century. He first gained fame as a music critic under the pen name 'Corno di Bassetto,' but by then had already begun writing essays, political pamphlets, books and (eventually) plays. Among his most famous plays are Arms and the Man Major Barbara Saint Joan (1923), and Pygmalion (1914). The last was adapted 50 years later into the Broadway musical My Fair Lady . Even with these successes Shaw is perhaps better known for his famous egotism and unique personality: Shaw was a vegetarian and teetotaler, a radical socialist and social reformer, and a noted caustic wit who remained active until his death at age 94. Email Us GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950 ) T HE first published work of the noted satirist and playwright, George Bernard Shaw, was inspired by the American "revival" team, Moody and Sankey. Young Shaw attended one of their revival services in Dublin, and on his return home was moved to write a letter to Public Opinion in which he remarked that "if this sort of thing is religion, then I am an athiest." Shaw was the son of a financially impractical father and a remarkable mother whose musical talent not only helped out the family income but provided young George with an excellent musical background. In his regular schooling which ended when he was fifteen, Shaw was generally near the bottom of the class. When Shaw was fifteen, a friend secured him a position in the office of a Dublin land agent where he endured the drudgery of routine and figures for five years. Shaw was first acted on the stage of the Royalty Theater, London, in 1892, but created not even a little ripple. He continued his efforts with

George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950 George Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin, as the son of George Carr Shaw, who was in the wholesale grain trade, and Lucinda Elisabeth (Gurly) Shaw, the daughter of an impoverished landowner, who was 16-years younger than her husband. In 1866 the family moved to a better neighborhood, and in 1876 he went to London, joining his sister and mother. Shaw did not return to Ireland for nearly thirty years. In 1898 Shaw married the wealthy Charlotte Payne-Townshend. They settled in 1906 in the Hertfordshire village of Ayot St. Lawrence. Shaw remained with Charlotte until her death, although he was occasionally linked with other women. Shaw died at Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, on November 2, 1950 and it was his wish that his ashes be mixed with those of his wife, Charlotte. You see things; and say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were and say 'Why not?' What the world calls originality is only an unaccustomed method of tickling it. A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. One man that has a mind and knows it can always beat ten men who haven't and don't.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Shaw, George Bernard (1856-1950), Irish-born writer, considered the most significant British dramatist since William Shakespeare . His plays are essentially brilliant dialogues on such topics as religion, politics, money, science, marriage, and art. Although regarded as comedies, the plays represent a serious effort to influence the ideas and attitudes of the audience. Often, conventional ideas are inverted or twisted to shock the public into a fresh awareness. Despite his emphasis on ideas, Shaw created probably the most memorable collection of dramatic characters since the 17th century. In addition to being a prolific playwright (he wrote 50 stage plays), Shaw is regarded as the most readable music critic and best theater critic of his generation. He was also one of literature’s great letter writers.
