Name: Anna Howard Shaw Birth Date: February 14, 1847 Death Date: July 2, 1919 Place of Birth: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England Place of Death: Moylan, Pennsylvania, United States Nationality: American Gender: Female Occupations: reformer, suffragist, women's rights activist Anna Howard Shaw Main Biography Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919), American suffragist leader, reformer, and feminist, was the fourth president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Anna Howard Shaw was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, on Feb. 14, 1847, but was raised near Big Rapids, Michigan. She studied at Alma College in Michigan and at Boston University's theological school, from which she graduated in 1878. Pastoral work grew tiresome, and at the age of 35 she entered Boston University's medical school, receiving her medical degree in 1886. The practice of medicine proved equally unsatisfying, and she abandoned it for lecturing and temperance activities. She rose to head the suffrage department of the Women's Christian Temperance Union before leaving for the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Susan B. Anthony, then president of NAWSA, valued Dr. Shaw's oratorical talents highly and put them to frequent use. But when Anthony resigned in 1900, she chose Carrie Chapman Catt to succeed her. Four years later Catt resigned, and Dr. Shaw's loyalty was rewarded. Although she was president of NAWSA for 11 years, her tenure was not a success. NAWSA had become a large national organization that demanded diplomatic, political, and administrative talents that Dr. Shaw lacked. Moreover, she was a hot-tempered, pugnacious woman and offended both friends and enemies of woman's suffrage. An associate said that she was very witty, but always terribly down on men, and sometimes one really almost winced when she attacked them so vigorously that they got red in the face and looked ready to do murder."

Dr. Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919). When Shaw was twelve her father moved the family to a frontier "farm." He then left her invalid mother, one older brother and a batch of younger brothers and sisters while he returned to Massachusetts to work. Never mind that the farmhouse was a cabin with only holes for doors and windows, the fields were full of tree stumps and the oldest son had to leave for health reasons. Shaw loved the adventure. With only two years of education she became a teacher at age fifteen. Eventually she went on to high school, Albion College, and both the divinity and medical schools of Boston University. Although an ordained minister, and a medical doctor she spent most of her life as a lecturer for suffrage, temperance and the League of Nations plan. In 1904 Shaw became the president of the National American Women's Suffrage Association (NAWSA) which eventually won the vote under Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920.

Anna Howard Shaw
The First Woman Ordained in
The Methodist Protestant Church - 1880
Anna Howard Shaw was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England on February 14, 1847. She was a descendant of English Unitarians. Anna's parents came to America when she was four years old, and after living for several years in Massachusetts they moved to the then unsettled port of Michigan, where Anna encountered the hardships of pioneer life. During her pastorate in East Dennis she applied to the New England Methodist Episcopal Conference for ordination, but although she performed better on her examination than any candidate that year, her ordination was refused on account of her sex. The case was appealed to the general conference in Cincinnati in 1880, where the refusal was confirmed. Ms. Shaw then applied for ordination to the Methodist Protestant Church and received it on 12th October, 1880, becoming the first woman to be ordained in that denomination. She supplemented her theological course with one in medicine, taking the degree of M. D. at Boston University during her pastorate.
Becoming more and more interested in practical reform, she finally resigned her position in East Dennis and became a lecturer for the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association. After entering the general lecture field and becoming widely and favorably known as an eloquent speaker on reform topics, she was appointed national superintendent of franchise in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She preached the opening sermon at the Women's International Council in Washington in 1888. Soon after, at the urgent request of leading suffragists, she resigned her office in the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union and accepted that of National Lecturer for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, of which she was elected vice-president-at-large in 1892. She was also president of Wimodaughsis, a woman's national club, of Washington, D. C.

Catt, Carrie Chapman (1859-1947) Carrie Catt was an American leader in the campaign for woman suffrage. She served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1900 to 1904, and from 1915 to 1920, when Amendment 19 to the United States Constitution was passed, giving women the right to vote. Catt began her suffrage work as an organizer of clubs in 1887. She became one of the suffrage movement's most effective lecturers and organizers. Her work extended to Canada and Europe. From 1904 to 1923, she served as president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. In 1920, Catt founded the National League of Women Voters (now called the League of Women Voters) to teach women an understanding of public affairs so they could vote intelligently. In 1925, she founded the National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War. This became the Women's Action Committee for Victory and a Lasting Peace. Carrie Clinton Lane was born in Ripon, Wis., and attended Iowa State College. She taught school and became the first woman superintendent of schools in Mason City, Iowa.

Rev. Shaw. was licensed as a Methodist preacher in 1871, leaving the Methodist Episcopal Church because of prejudice and bigotry, she was ordained as the first woman minister in the Methodist Protestant Church in 1880.
She studied medicine but in face of more prejudices, she became convinced that woman's suffrage was the most important work for her.
A brilliant speaker, she traveled widely, perhaps only second to Susan B. Anthony. As Susan B. said, Anna Howard Shaw did the work in the movement for 20 years that no one else wanted to do.

Although most romantic fiction pictures suttee as voluntary devotion, the fact is that in many parts of India the widows are dragged screaming and tied onto the funeral pyres by sons or other male relatives who wish to avoid sharing the man’s wealth. Even those women who voluntarily mount the funeral pyre were usually drugged or tied to prevent them from trying to escape once the flames reach them. The women were ideally always alive when the pyres were lit.
