William Sharp "Fiona MacLeod"
Novelist
Son of a muslin manufacturer and a mother with Scandinavian blood, William Sharp was born in Paisley on 12th September 1855 and left when aged 12 years. "Celt in heart and spirit" he was a delicate "merry and mischievous" child, also a loner with a strong imagination. From his Highland nurse, and reinforced in later life by many visits there, he learned about the Celtic sagas. He attended Glasgow University but did not graduate. Diligent but unconventional, his interests included nature, folklore and foreign languages and literature. He found work with a lawyer, but an attack of typhoid so weakened him that he went to Australia to recuperate. Based on this visit was his first novel Sport of chance Returned from Australia, he worked for a bank in London and on medical advice turned down the offer of a literary professorship. While in London, his move into a career in writing was influenced by the artist, Sir Joseph Noel Paton , a one-time pattern designer in Paisley. In 1884 he had married his cousin

INCUNABULA
William H. Scheide examines
the Gutenberg Bible. Location designators: ExI, Kane, GA, WHS, and RHT. There are three major groupings of incunabula in the Library: I. The General Collection (ExI) II. Kane Collection and III. The Scheide Library. For details about holdings of of incunabula in the Princeton University Library, see the checked copy of Goff's incunabula bibliography. It can be consulted in the Munger (Kane) room of the Library. See: Frederick R. Goff. Incunabula in American Libraries. Third Census. (New York, 1964) [(ExB) 0225.398]. The University owns about 500 incunabula (books printed 1450-1500); in addition, there are about 150 in the Scheide Library (privately held but accessible to University and other scholars.) According to Goff, Princeton ranks twenty-fifth among the twenty-five largest collections of incunabula in American libraries. Moreover, "these twenty-five libraries account for almost seventy per cent of the total number recorded in American ownership." There are special files providing important access to the Library's collection of incunabula. They are: (1) chronological by date of printing (2) place of printing (3) printers and publishers and (4) a special incunabula shelf list. These files are kept in the reception room of the main rooms of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.

William Sharp 12 September 12 December ) was a Scottish writer, of poetry, fiction, and literary biography, who from 1893 wrote also as Fiona Macleod , a pseudonym kept virtually secret during his lifetime, with Fiona Macleod becoming much more famous and popular, and biographed independently in contemporary sources. He was also an editor of the poetry of Ossian Walter Scott Matthew Arnold Algernon Swinburne and Eugene Lee-Hamilton He was born in Paisley and educated at Glasgow Academy and Glasgow University , which he attended 1871-1872 without completing a degree. In 1872 he contracted typhoid . During 1874-5 he worked in a Glasgow law office. His health broke down in 1876 and he was sent on a voyage to Australia . In 1878 he took a position in a bank in London. He was introduced to Dante Gabriel Rossetti by Sir Noel Paton , and joined the Rossetti literary group; which included Hall Caine Philip Bourke Marston and Swinburne.
