    ERNEST THOMPSON SETON
Some men called him "Wolf" Born Ernest Evan Thompson on August 14, 1860 in South Shields, Durham, England, eighth child in a family of ten sons, his family was descended from Lord Seton, Earl of Winton. In 1866, his family moved to Canada and settled near Lindsay, Ontario. It was there, in the wooded area, that his fascination with nature evolved. In 1870, the family moved to Toronto and from 1870 to 1879, Seton roamed the Don Valley - a haven for birds. In 1873, he purchased a copy of Ross's Birds of Canada and soon realized, through his own observations, the many errors in the book. At the age of 16, he started gathering information for his own book on the birds of Canada. His painting started in 1876 and he became a member of the Toronto Society of Arts. His Sharpshin Hawk earned him a two year apprenticeship in a Toronto portrait studio. At nineteen(1879), he won a gold medal in the Society's Art Contest. He then moved to England where, in 1880, he won a seven year scholarship to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in London. In 1881, he enjoyed his first public exhibition but could not resist the "Call of the West" - the "Buffalo Wind" - that beckoned his return to Canada in 1882. After a brief rest in Toronto, he left for Carberry, Manitoba aboard a colonist-cattle train. That year, he adopted the Seton ancestral name but initially called himself Ernest Seton Thompson.

Seton was born in South Shields (County Durham) as the ninth child (he has nine brothers). His ancestors fought for the Stuart (1745) and later fled to England. When he was six his family emigrated to Canada. For some time they lived in a small town called Lindsay (Ontario). The story of Two Little Savages is set there. Seton could spend long hours watching the birds and his first sketches were drawn here (actualy he is much better known as the illustrator than the writer). Then the family moved to Toronto where Ernest attended the local school. His genius was recognized soon - he was a brilliant student. After he had finished his studies, he lived for some time with his brother on their farm in Manitoba. At that time, Seton became much more interested in wild nature. He went on drawing and painting and one of his pictures - "The Sleeping Wolf" actually won first prize at the Paris Salon in 1891. From 1896 he lived in the United States. He was the founding member of the youth movement called the 'Woodcraft Indians' and also became the Chief Scout of the Boy Scouts in America. Apart from his immensely successful

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies ERNEST THOMPSON SETON (1860 - 1946) Seton was actually born Ernest Evan Seton Thompson at 43 Beach Road, South Shields, where there is a plaque. The family, which included ten sons, emigrated to Canada in 1866. Seton gained experience as a naturalist by trailing and hunting in the prairie country of Manitoba, and used this knowledge as the basis for his animal stories; his artistic training enabled him to illustrate his own books. His most popular book was Wild Animals I Have Known (1898), about which he lectured to the Newcastle Lit and Phil in 1904. A curious work was his The Natural History of the Ten Commandments (1907), moralistic tales purporting to show wild creatures obeying the commandments. Seton fought for the establishment of reservations for the Indians, and parks for threatened wildlife species. He later became chairman of the committee which established the Boy Scouts of America. As well as further books on scouting and woodcraft, he wrote an autobiography, published in 1940. Seton's writings greatly influenced Lord Baden-Powell (q.v.) in setting up the Boy Scout movement. Other admirers have included Gavin Maxwell, George Orwell (qq.v.) and Richard Adams, who acknowledges Seton's influence on Watership Down , the best-selling rabbit saga of recent years. In his
