The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore
Edward Thomson Seton This is the great book of the woodcraft movement of the early twentieth century, glorifying the outdoor life and respect for the environment. The first principle of woodcraft was not just to be outdoors but to interact with it, and thus build life skills. The role model was the heroic Indian of Fenimore Cooper and Longfellow; the ideal, the Spartan-like Indian creed of courage, honor, reverence, and discipline. Chapters are devoted to Woodland Songs, Dances and Ceremonies; Scouting Indoors and Outdoors including star lore; Signalling and Indian Signs; Craft and Games of the Summer Camp; Health and Woodland Medicine; Natural History; Forestry; Indian Ways and Campfire Stories, all with profuse illustrations. About the Author
Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) founded the Woodcraft Indians in 1902 and was cofounder of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910. From the series Kegan Paul American Heritage Library For more information, please contact

Added col. pict. t.p., half-title. Burnham was born at Peterborough, Ontario, and became a lawyer and a member of parliament as well as a writer. (Rhodenizer p. 730). His Jack Ralston leaves his home in Montreal to join the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in Labrador where he quickly achieves a position of trust and leadership. Although the story is filled with exciting incidents, and a touch of romance, its main thrust is the hostility between the Eskimo and the Indians which the Hudson Bay people tried to ameliorate in the interests of trade. The author of this book strongly favoured the Eskimo, and was extremely denigrating towards the Indians of the region. 430 [DE MILLE, James] 1837-1880.

As the book's title suggests, gold-panning in the Cariboo is the centrepiece of the story. However, the plot is less conventional than most such tales with the addition of a small girl, a lost will and some background of urban Toronto in 1858 and 1867. The Preface is dedicated: 'To Boy who once lived in British Columbia and now lives in California. "Lest he forget"'. 382 [ornament] /TALES/OF/THE NORTHERN SEAS./ [pict. ornament] /London:/THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY;/56, PATERNOSTER ROW; 65, ST. The contents include a description of the land around the North Pole, an account of 'Esquimaux' life and whaling in Baffin Bay. Each chapter ends with a brief, religious homily as befits a Religious Tract Society author. 383 [WALSHE, Elizabeth Hely].

Alphabetical Listing by Name Listing by Country Listing by Discipline Each name in the following list of naturalists is linked to a corresponding capsule "chrono-biographical" sketch of that individual prepared by the authors. Coverage extends backward in time as far as the eighteenth century; figures from all over the world are included (though there is admittedly a decided Anglo-American bias). The target subject here is biogeography, but this being a broad field there are many persons on the list who are better known as climatologists, zoologists, botanists, ecologists, oceanographers, paleontologists, etc.in other words, who made their main reputations in cognate disciplines. This service has been set up to support my two "Early Classics in Biogeography, Distribution and Diversity Studies"

Notes: Ernest Thompson Seton was a naturalist and author born in South Shields county, Durham. At the age of six he and his family emigrated to Canada, living in Lindsay, Ontario, which provided a setting for a novel written later on in his life, Two Little Savages (1903). He later moved to Toronto to get his education, and became a Naturalist to the Government of Manitoba, starting the "Woodcraft Movement," which later melded with the boy scouts and got him appointed Chief Scout of America. He began writing animal stories in the 1880s, in 1898 publishing a collection called Wild Animals I Have Known .
