Robert W. Service (1874-1958)
The Telegraph Operator
I will not wash my face; I will not brush my hair; I "pig" around the place There's nobody to care. Nothing but rock and tree; Nothing but wood and stone; Oh God, it's hell to be Alone, alone, alone.
Snow-peaks and deep-gashed draws Corral me in a ring. I feel as if I was The only living thing On all this blighted earth; And so I frowst and shrink, And crouching by my hearth, I hear the thoughts I think.
I think of all I miss The boys I used to know; The girls I used to kiss; The coin I used to blow: The bars I used to haunt; The racket and the row; The beers I didn't want (I wish I had 'em now).
Day after day the same, Only a little worse; No one to grouch or blame Oh, for a loving curse! Oh, in the night I fear, Haunted by nameless things, Just for a voice to cheer, Just for a hand that clings!
Faintly as from a star Voices come o'er the line; Voices of ghosts afar

    A pistol shot rings round and round the world;
    In pitiful defeat a warrior lies. A last defiance to dark Death is hurled, A last wild challenge shocks the sunlit skies. Alone he falls, with wide, wan, woeful eyes: Eyes that could smile at death - could not face shame. Alone, alone he paced his narrow room, In the bright sunshine of that Paris day; Saw in his thought the awful hand of doom; Saw in his dream his glory pass away; Tried in his heart, his weary heart, to pray: "O God! who made me, give me strength to face The spectre of this bitter, black disgrace." The burn brawls darkly down the shaggy glen; The bee-kissed heather blooms around the door; He sees himself a barefoot boy again, Bending o'er page of legendary lore.

    Robert William Service , a Canadian poet and novelist, was born at Preston, England. In 1894 he moved to Canada and settled on Vancouver Island. There he took employment with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Victoria, B.C., and was transferred to White Horse in the Yukon and then to Dawson. In all he spent eight years in the Yukon and travelled widely. During his last years with the bank he wrote verse describing life in the North.
    THE CREMATION OF SAM MCGEE
    There are strange things done in the midnight sun
    By the men who moil for gold
    The Arctic trails have their secret tales
    That make your blood run cold;
    The Northern Lights have seen strange sights,
    But the queerest they ever did see
    Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge I cremated Sam McGee. Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows. Why he left his home in the south to roam round the Pole God only knows. He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell; Through he'd often say in his homely way that he'd "sooner live in hell."

The committee was responsible for the daily administration of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum of the Philadelphia General Hospital. The committee attended to the maintenance of the museum building, oversaw the care and cataloging of museum pieces, and acknowledged donations to the museum. This committee reported to the Medical Board of the Philadelphia General Hospital. The Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum Committee was an outgrowth of the Osler Memorial Committee, which was responsible for the establishment of the museum. After the museum's opening in June 1940, the Osler Memorial Committee was discharged, and the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum Committee was appointed. The new committee consisted of the same members as the Osler Memorial Committee and was chaired by Robert J. Hunter. In 1955, the committee's name was changed to the Committee on Memorials. This committee remained in existence until 1977, when the Philadelphia General Hospital and the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum were closed. Scope and contents This collection consists of items, spanning 1730 to 1960, from the museum collection of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum of the Philadelphia General Hospital. Present are letters, invitations, programs, reprints, photographs, a diary, and miscellaneous material relating to the history of the Philadelphia General Hospital. Also included are the papers of individuals who were important to the history of the hospital, including Daniel J. McCarthy, Arthur A. Stevens, and Sir William Osler. Most of the material was collected by Robert J. Hunter, Chairman of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum Committee. The collection, which is arranged alphabetically, includes Robert J. Hunter's correspondence as chairman of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum Committee; these letters deal with the opening of the museum, the dedication program, the solicitation of museum items, and the general administration of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum. Also present in the collection are the papers of Daniel J. McCarthy (1874-1958), an intern and visiting neurosurgeon at Philadelphia General Hospital. This material, spanning 1917 to 1919, documents McCarthy's participation in the Red Cross Mission to Russia. Included is McCarthy's correspondence with LieutenantColonel Frank Billings (1854-1932), who was chairman of the project. Also present are special orders, McCarthy's diary, and a notebook containing his sketches and notes. The collection also contains papers of Sir William Osler (18491919). Present are photographs of Osler's case notes, some of which were taken when he discovered the parasite which causes malaria. The collection also includes eight Osler letters. Several of these letters were written to David Riesman (18671940), including Osler's letter of 13 April 1905 in which he recommends the creation of a new medical society. Another letter in the collection, written to John Welsh Croskey (26 December 1918), includes Osler's reminiscences about his experiences at Philadelphia General Hospital. Included among the Osler material is a photograph (ca. 1886) of Osler with several physicians in the autopsy room at Philadelphia General Hospital. The papers of Arthur A. Stevens (1865-1944) are also present in the collection. Included is his medical degree certificate from the University of Pennsylvania, a program for a dinner held in his honor, letters congratulating him on the publication of his book, The Practice of Medicine (1922), and a letter appointing him honorary consulting physician at Philadelphia General Hospital. Other individuals represented in the collection include John L. Bower (1865-1955), W. A. Newman Dorland (1864-1956), William H. H. Githens (1840-1923), and Thomas S. Roberts (1858-1946), all of whom were former residents of the Philadelphia General Hospital. In addition to the papers of individuals, the collection contains some interesting miscellaneous material, including the program, script, and song lyrics to "Osler Slept Here", a musical comedy performed by the Blockley Medical Society in 1950. Also present is a photograph album (ca. 1896-1898) containing scenes of the Philadelphia General Hospital. Provenance The museum collection of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum consists of three different accessions: Acc. 1992-036-05, Acc. 1989-113, and Acc. 1991-055. Acc. 1992-036-05 and Acc. 1991-055 are on permanent loan from the Philadelphia City Archives. Acc. 1992-036-05 was received by the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 18 January 1978; Acc. 1992-055 was received on 8 May 1991. Acc. 1989-113, which consists of items with Mutter Museum accession numbers 2044.41, 2045.2, and 2045.6, was transferred from the Mutter Museum to the Historical Collections of the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 4 December 1989. The collection was processed and cataloged in 1992. 1730-1960 2 boxes (.6 linear ft.) 7/30/1992 wvg

    On this day in 1874 Robert Service "the Kipling of Canada" was born in Preston, England. When he was twenty-one, Service quit his bank job in Glasgow and emigrated to Canada; his three winters in White Horse were the "incubation of all worth while in my life" daily snowshoes into "the Great White Silence" breathing "below-zero air as bracing as champagne" and composing millionaire-making poems. Auld Lang Syne Rhyme
    This day, or the moment of this day's passing, has brought out the commemorative spirit in many. At one end of the range is the world's "Best Bad Poet," William McGonagall; at the other is poet laureate Tennyson's "In Memoriam"; somewhere in the middle is Robert Service, whose hobo-hero chooses New Year's Eve and McGuffy's Saloon for his last, fatal memory of Ethel.

    Robert W Service (1874 - 1958) Born in Preston, Lancashire, in January 1874 of a Scots father and English mother, Robert Service spent most of his formative childhood years in the Ayrshire town of Kilwinning where his father was born and his grandfather was the town's first Postmaster. His great-great-grandfather, Alexander Service, according to family lore ... "achieved the distinction of getting drunk in Irvine with Robert Burns". His early years in Kilwinning were brief but he certainly remembered them and gives a none too flattering picture of the dour place it was for him in his autobiography where he styles it "... the long grey town". A notch on one of the pews of the parish church is pointed out as where he whiled away the time during a once too long sermon! The only hint of a future career as one of the world's leading poets came on his sixth birthday when Service wrote, what he later described as his "first poetic flutter", God bless the cakes and bless the jam;
