A Great Alaskan Adventure on Veendam

Author's Product Rating
Pros
Holland America's Veendam is elegant ... Alaska trumps that! See Alaska by all means! Cons That most of us cannot spare the time to fully explore this beautiful land! The Bottom Line Though I said best for couples, many even large family gatherings are discovering Alaska. It will stir your heart and soul. You must go someday! Full Review ALASKA ... by all means! acquaint myself with these glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart John Muir , American Naturalist There is no bad time to see Alaska from April to September, as the weather and artistic canvas change each week from one ambitious palate to another. Each will be draped in dramatic and differing color schemes for the canvas of your memory. Our experiences now include an early June, and an early July visit. Each of our adventures included a brief do-it-yourself arrival and departure stay and tour. Both of our adventures were enveloped with the grace and charm of a perfectly orchestrated seven night cruise aboard a lovely, yet relaxed Holland America ship. In 2000 it was the elegant Volendam, and later it was a sister ship the superb Veendam.

The Song of the Wage-slave
When the long, long day is over, and the Big Boss gives me my pay, I hope that it won't be hell-fire, as some of the parsons say. And I hope that it won't be heaven, with some of the parsons I've met All I want is just quiet, just to rest and forget. Look at my face, toil-furrowed; look at my calloused hands; Master, I've done Thy bidding, wrought in Thy many lands Wrought for the little masters, big-bellied they be, and rich; I've done their desire for a daily hire, and I die like a dog in a ditch. I have used the strength Thou hast given, Thou knowest I did not shirk; Threescore years of labor Thine be the long day's work. And now, Big Master, I'm broken and bent and twisted and scarred, But I've held my job, and Thou knowest, and Thou wilt not judge me hard. Thou knowest my sins are many, and often I've played the fool Whiskey and cards and women, they made me the devil's tool. I was just like a child with money; I flung it away with a curse

91. Robert W Service - Poet
Robert W Service (1874 1958) Alexander Service, according to family lore achieved the distinction of getting drunk in Irvine with Robert Burns .
http://www.kilwinning.org/service/default.htm
Robert W Service (1874 - 1958) Born in Preston, Lancashire, in January 1874 of a Scots father and English mother, Robert Service spent most of his formative childhood years in the Ayrshire town of Kilwinning where his father was born and his grandfather was the town's first Postmaster. His great-great-grandfather, Alexander Service, according to family lore ... "achieved the distinction of getting drunk in Irvine with Robert Burns". His early years in Kilwinning were brief but he certainly remembered them and gives a none too flattering picture of the dour place it was for him in his autobiography where he styles it "... the long grey town". A notch on one of the pews of the parish church is pointed out as where he whiled away the time during a once too long sermon! The only hint of a future career as one of the world's leading poets came on his sixth birthday when Service wrote, what he later described as his "first poetic flutter", God bless the cakes and bless the jam;

The Junior God
by
Robert W. Service
The Junior God looked from his place
In the conning towers of heaven,
And he saw the world through the span of space
Like a giant golf-ball driven.
And because he was bored, as some gods are,
With high celestial mirth,
He clutched the reins of a shooting star,
And he steered it down to earth. The Junior God, 'mid leaf and bud, Passed on with a weary air, Till lo! he came to a pool of mud, And some hogs were rolling there. Then in he plunged with gleeful cries, And down he lay supine; For they had no mud in paradise, And they likewise had no swine. The Junior God forgot himself; He squelched mud through his toes; With the careless joy of a wanton boy His reckless laughter rose. Till, tired at last, in a brook close by, He washed off every stain; Then softly up to the radiant sky He rose, a god again. The Junior God now heads the roll In the list of heaven's peers; He sits in the House of High Control, And he regulates the spheres. Yet does he wonder, do you suppose, If, even in gods divine

A Life Tragedy
from
The Spell Of The Yukon And Other Verses

by
Robert W. Service

A pistol shot rings round and round the world;
In pitiful defeat a warrior lies. A last defiance to dark Death is hurled, A last wild challenge shocks the sunlit skies. Alone he falls, with wide, wan, woeful eyes: Eyes that could smile at death - could not face shame. Alone, alone he paced his narrow room, In the bright sunshine of that Paris day; Saw in his thought the awful hand of doom; Saw in his dream his glory pass away; Tried in his heart, his weary heart, to pray: "O God! who made me, give me strength to face The spectre of this bitter, black disgrace." The burn brawls darkly down the shaggy glen; The bee-kissed heather blooms around the door; He sees himself a barefoot boy again, Bending o'er page of legendary lore.
