All the little stars I see;
And I know that God is there
O, how lonely He must be!
Me, I laugh and leap all day, Till my head begins to nod; He's so great, He cannot play: I am glad I am not God. Poor kind God upon His throne, Up there in the sky so blue, Always, always all alone . . . "~Please, dear God, I pity You.~" Gods in the Gutter My friends
The man above was a murderer, the man below was a thief; And I lay there in the bunk between, ailing beyond belief; A weary armful of skin and bone, wasted with pain and grief. My feet were froze, and the lifeless toes were purple and green and gray; The little flesh that clung to my bones, you could punch it in holes like clay; The skin on my gums was a sullen black, and slowly peeling away.

44. Poem Fighting Mac
The echo of his deeds is ringing yet. Will ring for aye. All else . . . let usforget. Robert W. Service. Britishborn Canadian Poet 1874-1958.
http://pw1.netcom.com/~reincke/poem.html
"Fighting Mac" A Life Tragedy A pistol shot rings round and round the world; In pitiful defeat a warrior lies. A last defiance to dark Death is hurled, A last wild challenge shocks the sunlit skies. Alone he falls, with wide, wan, woeful eyes: Eyes that could smile at deathcould not face shame. Alone, alone he paced his narrow room, In the bright sunshine of that Paris day; Saw in his thought the awful hand of doom; Saw in his dream his glory pass away; Tried in his heart, his weary heart, to pray: "O God! who made me, give me strength to face The spectre of this bitter, black disgrace." The burn brawls darkly down the shaggy glen; The bee-kissed heather blooms around the door; He sees himself a barefoot boy again, Bending o'er page of legendary lore. He hears the pibroch, grips the red claymore, Runs with the Fiery Cross, a clansman true, Sworn kinsman of Rob Roy and Roderick Dhu. Eating his heart out with a wild desire, One day, behind his counter trim and neat, He hears a sound that sets his brain afire The Highlanders are marching down the street.

This re-telling of a favourite poem is accompanied by "camera-animated video" resembling Inuit silkscreens. The reading by Max Ferguson is spooky and emotional; the illustrations are bright, varied, and perfectly representative of the content and mood of the poem. The length, given the lack of full animation, is appropriate. An excellent advance organizer for a creative writing exercise. Suffered from a childhood spinal injury and was "doomed to invalidism and seclusion from the world" until she met Robert with whom she eloped, much to the consternation of her father. The Brownings fled to Italy, and there they spent the rest of their days (at least Elizabeth did). The Browning romance was celebrated in Rudolf Besier's The Barretts of Wimpole Street . Her poems run deep with religious feeling, with her love of Italy, and her love of Robert.

Festival to feature Yukon, Gold Rush
Play inspired by 19th-century poet's work
Sunday, July 04, 2004 By Dave Zuchowski
Last year, as part of Washington and Jefferson College's Children's Festival, writer and director Dan Shaw took local audiences on a trip to the Middle East with his theatrical adaptation of the tale of Gilgamesh, the legendary Sumerian King. This summer, patrons of Shaw's latest dramatic opus will be whisked north to the Yukon during the heady days of the Gold Rush. "Each year, I try to alternate the locales of the play featured as part of the festival between the Western and non-Western world," Shaw said. And because so many adults attend, he added, "It might be more appropriate to call what we do family theater instead of children's theater." Whatever the age, Shaw promises a fast, one-hour, original, rollicking good time for everyone in this year's mix of characters, which includes fur trappers, Canadian Mounties, American Indians, prospectors and saloon girls. Inspired by the poems of Robert W. Service (1874-1958), "Law of the Yukon" traces the exploits of people who came to the Yukon Territory during the Gold Rush and embraced the North as their new home. Although the cast includes close to 20 actors, Shaw stays true to what he calls the "Gilligan's Island Rule," which allows no more than seven major characters so as not to overwhelm a young audience.
