Alan Seeger, famous World War I poet and uncle of folk singer/song writer Pete Seeger, sought to share the romanticism and idealism of his youth with the world in his verse. After graduation in 1910, much to the disappointment and puzzlement of his parents, Seeger moved to Greenwich Village in Manhattan in search of the beauty and idealism of the poet's life. Barely two years later, disillusioned and restless, he left for Paris. His love for France grew and when war broke out between Germany and France in 1914, Seeger enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. True to his beliefs and feeling a deep social commitment, he felt it was his duty and honor to defend his beloved France. Later in the War, such poets as John Peale Bishop, David Funk, Gertrude Stein, John Allan Wyeth, Edmund Wilson, Edith Wharton and other American poets all spent time in France-some serving in the armed forces and others as volunteers for the Cause. However, none were more dedicated than young Alan Seeger. Seeger's poetry, according to experts, was read those waging war in the trenches. In 1916, the American Colony in Paris asked Seeger to compose and read a poem at its Memorial Day/May 30 ceremony at the statue of Washington and Lafayette in the Placedes Etats-Unis. His reading of the poem was not to be. A clerical error prevented his attendance at the ceremony and on July 4, 1916, Seeger was mortally wounded on the battle field. The poem he had penned, Rendezvous With Death, proved to be prophetic.

    Off to War
Folk singer Pete Seeger (1919-) used to sing with the Weavers, one of whose songs contains these words in its chorus: I ain't gonna study war no more,
I ain't gonna study war no more, Study war no more. I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, Study war no more. Pete Seeger is the nephew of Alan Seeger (1888-1916). Before the belated entry of the United States into World War I, Alan Seeger, an American citizen, joined the French Foreign Legion to help defend France against invasion by Germany. Besides being a soldier, Alan Seeger was also a poet. A poem which he wrote about death in combat during springtime has special meaning in the spring of 2003, as American, British, and Australian troops begin to fight in Iraq: I have a rendezvous with Death At some disputed barricade

Part 1: Alan Seeger, a Modern "Renaissance" Poet?
    BIOGRAPHY
Alan Seeger was born in New York City on July 22, 1888 and died as a legionnaire in the French Foreign Legion on the battlefield at Belloy-en-Santerre, France on July 4, 1916. During his childhood and youth he had often been in frail health. He was a highly sensitive and erudite, well-read young man. Educated at Harvard College, from which he graduated in 1910, he regularly contributed verse to the now defunct Harvard Monthly His life suddenly altered radically after he left Harvard, as he spent the next two years living the life of a "bohemian" in Greenwich Village before finally emigrating to France in 1912. He fell head-over-heels in love with Paris, as she embodied his own ideals of life. There he kept up his hedonistic lifestyle in the Left Bank's radical culture, with scarcely a care in the world. In 1914, he traveled to England, there spent some intimate time with his father at Canterbury Cathedral. While in England, he tried unsuccessfully to have his poetry published. Upon his return to Paris, World War I broke out and he almost immediately enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. Wounded at the front in February, 1915 and invalid from bronchitis again in March, 1916, he recuperated at Biarritz before returning to the Somme front in June, 1916. In an all out attack on Belloy-en-Santerre the next month, he was fatally wounded. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre (War Cross) and the Médaille Militaire for outstanding bravery.

Vallance Review August 2003 Selective Historical Bibliography on the Sonnet
Bibliographie sélective de l'histoire du sonnet INTRODUCTORY NOTES
This bibliography is based on the Selective Bibliography on HTML page 3 = pg. rv12-6c.htm of Section 6, Chapter 12, “The Historical Evolution of the Sonnet” (approx. 100 pp.), in Vallance, Richard. Canadian Spirit Voices , Kedco Studios Press, Las Vegas, NV, © 2003. ISBN 1-878431-44-7 [CD-ROM multimedia book]. While several items not directly pertinent to the sonnet as such have been eliminated from this updated bibliography, scores of new entries relevant to the sonnet have been added. The bibliography is divided by language of publication into three major sections, one dedicated to the Father of sonnet, Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374), and one each for English and French plus French-Canadian poets and sonneteers. Unfortunately, I have been compelled, for reasons of space, to omit countless other great sonneteers of other languages. While I am first and foremost a poet and poetry critic, as a University librarian, I have made it my responsibility to be as scrupulous and as meticulous as possible in providing relatively complete bibliographic information for each item.

Li Po (or Li Bai) was born into the minor nobility in what is now Sichuan (Szechwan) Province. After an apprenticeship with a Daoist hermit and a time of wandering, he lived briefly as a poet at the Tang dynasty court in Changan but left as the result of intrigue. Then he returned to a life of Daoist study and carefree reflective wandering, writing poems and enjoying nature and the pleasures of wine, supplied free by the emperor's orders. According to legend, Li Po was drowned while drunkenly leaning from a boat to embrace the Moon's reflection on the water. He remained there, working as a government clerk, until 1873, when he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralysed. Poem: "Come up from the fields, Father"
