Proud Maisie
PROUD Maisie is in the wood,
Walking so early;
Sweet Robin sits on the bush,
Singing so rarely.
That delves the grave duly.
Shall light thee steady;
The owl from the steeple sing
Brignall Banks
O BRIGNALL banks are wild and fair,
And Greta woods are green,
And you may gather garlands there,
Would grace a summer queen:
And as I rode by Dalton Hall, Beneath the turrets high, A Maiden on the castle wall And Greta woods are green! To leave both tower and town, Thou first must guess what life lead we, That dwell by dale and down: And if thou canst that riddle read, As read full well you may, Then to the green-wood shalt thou speed And Greta woods are green! Than reign our English Queen. And by your palfrey good, I read you for a Ranger sworn His blast is heard at merry morn, And Greta woods are gay! I would I were with Edmund there, To reign his Queen of May! So gallantly you come, I read you for a bold Dragoon

Splendour of Scott Country
A Full Day Tour
Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)
This great writer, through his books and poems, re-invented the lost Scotland of the Stuarts, clans, and wild romance. Some of his best known works are Ivanhoe, Rob Roy and Red Gauntlet. This day Tour takes you through the countryside that inspired Scott throughout his life. Firstly to Sir Walter Scott's Courtroom where he was Sheriff of the county from 1799 until 1832; "the man himself" reminisces about his life and work. Travelling on to Abbotsford, the Border home of Sir Walter Scott and still lived in today by his descendants. He was a great collector and the house contains many beautiful paintings, armour, weaponry and historical artifacts. The house is in a beautiful location on the banks of the River Tweed. Tea/coffee and comfort stop! We journey to the nearby town of Melrose, a delightful place, ideal for a stroll or to shop. The little town has much to offer - the ruined Abbey dates from 1136; Priorwood Garden specialises in dried flowers; the Trimontium Exhibition gives an insight into the Roman occupation of the Borders.

Sir Walter Scott
Scottish Novelist and Poet
Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive! Sir Walter Scott was born on August 15, 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott created and popularized historical novels in a series called the Waverley Novels. In his novels Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people caught up in violent, dramatic changes in history. Scott's work shows the influence of the 18th century enlightenment. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, or ancestry. Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works. The Waverley Novels express his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past. He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. Central themes of many of Scott's novels are about conflicts between opposing cultures. Ivanhoe (1819) is about war between Normans and Saxons. The Talisman (1825) is about conflict between Christians and Muslims. His novels about Scottish history deal with clashes between the new English culture and the old Scottish. Scott's other great novels include "Old Mortality" (1816), "The Heart of Midlothian" (1819), and "St Ronan's Well" (1824). His Waverley series includes "Rob Roy" (1817), "A Legend of Montrose" (1819), and "Quentin Dunward" (1823).

Sir Walter Scott
There are many accomplished Scotts. They were generals, artists, inventors, explorers, academics, and even a wizard. But perhaps the best know was the literary great, Sir Walter Scott. Through is work, Scotland's heritage was restored after years of English oppression. Much of the lore of Scotland as we know it today can be traced directly back to Sir Walter's efforts. Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771 on August 15th. Educated for the law, he obtained the office of sheriff-depute of Selkirkshire in 1799 and in 1806 the office of clerk of session, a post whose duties he fulfilled faithfully for some twenty-five years. His lifelong interest in Scottish antiquity and the ballads which recorded Scottish history led him to try his hand at narrative poems of adventure and action. The Lay of the Last Minstrel Marmion (1808), and The Lady of the Lake (1810) made his reputation as one of the leading poets of his time. A novel, Waverley , which he had begun in 1805 was published anonymously in 1814. Subsequent novels appeared with the note "by the author of Waverley "; hence his novels are often called collectively "the
