[Back To Fiction Writers] Sir Walter Scott
Scott, the "great romancer," was trained as a lawyer. Steeped in the traditions and customs of the Scottish highlands, Scott's novels are backdropped with the events of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and set with scenes laid out in remote and uncultivated districts. His novels are filled with superstitious and mannerly characters, entangled with the intrigues of war, religion, and politics. Though Scott wrote verse he is at his best when writing prose. Scott "told his story in incident, and not in reflection or in adjective." Scott discovered that, indeed, facts are better than fiction; he wrote of events from real life and not "the fine-spun cobwebs of the brain." Scott's writings were politically based, he equated the mobs of the previous centuries to the "modern rabble" of his day, those who were rising up against tradition and custom such as the mobs of the French Revolution. He backed his friends who had a "horror of all reform, civil, political or religious." During his time he was a most popular figure with numerous readers and admirers, "quarrelling which of his novels is the best, opposing character to character, quoting passage against passage." William Hazlitt thought Scott to be a genius, but one "who took the wrong side and defended it by unfair means."

On Sir Walter Scott
Part I And so in sum, with regard to Lockhart's Life of Scott, readers that believe in us shall read it with the feeling that a man of talent, decision and insight wrote it; wrote it in seven volumes, not in one, because the public would pay for it better in that state; but wrote it with courage, with frankness, sincerity; on the whole, in a very readable, recommendable manner, as things go. Whosoever needs it can purchase it, or purchase the loan of it, with assurance more than usual that he has ware for his money. And now enough of the written Life; we will glance a little at the man and his acted life. Or coming down to our own times, was not August Kotzebue popular? Kotzebue, not so many years since, saw himself, if rumour and hand-clapping could be credited, the greatest man going; saw visibly his Thoughts, dressed-out in plush and pasteboard, permeating and perambulating civilised Europe; the most iron visages weeping with him, in all theatres from Cadiz to Kamtchatka; his own 'astonishing genius' meanwhile producing two tragedies or so per month: he, on the whole, blazed high enough: he too has gone out into Night and Orcus, and already is not. We will omit this of popularity altogether; and account it as making simply nothing towards Scott's greatness or non-greatness, as an accident, not a quality. Shorn of this falsifying nimbus, and reduced to his own natural dimensions, there remains the reality, Walter Scott, and what we can find in him: to be accounted great, or not great, according to the dialects of men. Friends to precision of epithet will probably deny his title to the name 'great.' It seems to us there goes other stuff to the making of great men than can be detected here. One knows not what idea worthy of the name of great what purpose, instinct or tendency, that could be called great, Scott ever was inspired with His life was worldly; his ambitions were worldly. There is nothing spiritual in him; all is economical, material, of the earth earthy. A love of picturesque, of beautiful, vigorous and graceful things; a genuine love, yet not more genuine than has dwelt in hundreds of men named minor poets: this is the highest quality to be discerned in him.

Sir Walter Scott 1771-1832
Born in Edinburgh, Scott began in the legal profession, but became a phenomenally successful poet and novelist with romantic historical works such as Waverley and Rob Roy . Scott was more responsible than anyone else for transforming the image of Scotland and for establishing many modern conceptions of Scottish history and character, not all of which meet with current approval amongst Scots themselves.

Synopsis
Ivanhoe was the first of Scott's novels to take place in the middle ages but it is far from being the fantastic, medievalist romance associated (in the critical imagination) with a visionary Britain that never was. This is the first novel in English to deal seriously with issues of race. A stirring romantic tale of peril and rescue, chivalry and pageantry, Ivanhoe is the captivating tale of Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, a knight returning from the Crusades who finds himself disinherited and thwarted in the pursuit of the lady Rowena.

A biography of Scottish novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott.
http://www.usefultrivia.com/biographies/sir_walter_scott_001.html
SIR WALTER SCOTT The great restorer of chivalrous romance in modern Europe came of a martial Border clan, the chiefs of which have founded in Scotland more than one nble house. Walter Scott was the ninth son of an Edinburgh solicitor, and was born in that city, August 1771. After a somewhat irregular education, the youth, already brimful of poetry, ballads, romances, and traditions of his warlike and loyal ancestors, was admitted as an advocate at the age of 21. He studied law with the same energy that he threw into all he took up, early obtained some small legal appointments, and ultimately that of Clerk of Sessionan office which he filled with zeal and efficiency for twenty-five years. It is clear that from early youth Scott's real bent was towards narrative romance, but his earlier publications were poems

Sir Walter Scott
Walter Scott was born on 15th August 1771 in the Old Town of Edinburgh. Later, the family moved (in a manner very reminiscent of Redguantlet ) to the clean air of George Square where Scott grew up, with a brief but vital interlude in the Borders to help the sickly boy - though it did not prevent an attack of polio which gave him a lame leg for life. He grew up full of energy, pursued school and university with enthusiasm but even more enthusiasm went into his reading, collecting Scottish Border ballads (to become Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border ), learning German (he was an early translator of Schiller and Bürger ), and trying his own hand at poetry. Scott was a man of prodigious energy as well as talent. All his adult life he was a working lawyer, but this did not prevent him from a social life which put him at the centre of literary Edinburgh (some would say, literary Scotland) and a steady involvement in prose writing, reviewing and periodical publication. Nor did it prevent his original writing, as well as ballad collections and translations, his earliest major success was in poetry: The Lay of the last minstrel Marmion (1808) and - outstandingly - The Lady of the lake

Sir Walter Scott Sir Walter Scott was a prolific novelist, whose writing combined ordinary people and historical events, thus mixing cultures and classes. He is credited with the creation of the historical novel genre. Scott began his career as a lawyer. From 1799 to 1832, he was Sheriff of Kelkirkshire, a position that gave him the time and financial freedom to write. Scott was made a baronet in 1820, and two years later directed George IV's state visit to Scotland. In 1797, at the age of 26, Scott married Charlotte Margaret Carpenter. He was struck by her beauty and grace when they first met in Gilsland, during a tour of the English lakes, and quickly decided to ask for her hand. In a letter requesting his parents blessing of the marriage, Scott wrote, "Without flying into raptures, for I must assure you that my judgment as well as my affections are consulted upon this occasion, then, I may safely assure you, that her temper is sweet and cheerful, her understanding good, and, what I know will give you pleasure, her principles of religion very serious." In Edinburgh, the couple indulged their love of theater, and when they later moved to a cottage outside the city, they cultivated a garden and Scott's own poetry:
