Main Composers Magazine Concerts ... Tavener More of Philip Sowcroft's articles from the BMS archive (provided by the British Music Society)
A FIFTH GARLAND OF ENGLISH LIGHT MUSIC COMPOSERS Several of the composers to be discussed here are little known nowadays though they were quite popular fifty or sixty years ago. One exception is Arthur Hutchings who died as recently as 1989, aged 83 and was probably only marginally a light music composer, being more of an academic, with books published on Schubert, Edmund Rubbra, Delius, Mozart, the Baroque Concerto and 19th Century Church Music, although many of these were aimed as much at the general reader as at the musical scholar. Hutchings was Professor at Durham University 1947-68 and at Exeter from 1968 to 1970. Not many people realise he was also a significant composer. Some of his work was for the church, settings of the Mass and the Anglican services, anthems, like Give Me The Wings of Faith, hymn tunes, St Oswald s Music (i.e. for parish communion; unison choir and congregation) and a set of Seasonal Preludes for the organ. But he wrote also for orchestra - a set of Variations and an attractively light Suite for strings - for secular choir (the cantata Heart s Desire) and for the stage. His opera after Dryden s Marriage la Mode was helped by his great knowledge of 18th Century music; in lighter vein still was the operetta The Plumber s Arms. Felton Rapley came a generation or more later. Both his arrangements and his original compositions were very numerous and very diverse. Best known of the former was Portrait of Clare, arranged, for orchestra or piano, from Schumann s song Devotion. The latter included many pieces for orchestra - the overture Down the Solent, A Highland Vision, An Irish Legend, Twilight Meditation, Evening in Capri, Elegy for Strings and the march Metropolis - church music (the anthem Angel Voices Ever Singing, The Lord is My Light, Though I Speak, Ye Holy Angels and If The Lord Himself) and many unison songs doubtless intended for young voices with titles like Cat!, Cradle Hymn, The Crooked Man, The Midnight Sun and The Pilgrim Song. Rapley was an accomplished performer on both piano and organ and he published solos for both instruments, those for the former included Fabiola and Lugano; examples of the later were Pastoral Improvisation and Postlude For a Joyful Occasion.

    Woodlawn Cemetery
Woodlawn is in the heart of the very friendly small town of DeRidder, LA. It belongs to the town but has an advisory board to help keep things running smoothly. There are many large, old trees and lots of shrubbery. There are security lights along the driveway which circles the heart of the cemetery. Water faucets are provided to water the grass and/or plants which individuals may choose to plant and care for. The young business women of deridder have installed a meditating area in the baby garden which is located in the north-east corner of Woodlawn. Not to pick out any particular area, but Esther Terry has arranged a lovely place to sit and relax and as she says, visit her loved one. This is a very large cemetery with over 1400 tombstones with names, and a great many vandalized and/or unmarked graves. If any names were missed, we deeply regret it and would be more than happy to make corrections and additions. Some of the tombstones are inscribed in spanish and/or greek. These tombstones we have copied the best we can. Information collected by Roberta B. Doty and Evelyn E. Cole, completed in 1992.

is located in the City of Siletz, former headquarters for the old Siletz Indian Reservation. This well-kept burial ground, located on a knoll known as Government Hill overlooking the present town site, has long served the Indian residents of the area. Beneath stately trees are buried hundreds of Siletz people. The oldest tombstone date is 1879, although the area is believed to have been in use in prior to that date. Formerly known as Siletz Cemetery, this native burial ground was renamed to honor Paul Washington after he was killed in France during World War I. Pfc. Washington, son of Hattie and Isaac Washington, died September 28, 1918. A double funeral was held May 24, 1919 for Paul and his brother Andrew after the latter died of tuberculosis in Denver as he was returning home from the war.
"Some years ago (1960's), I made a survey of Paul Washington when it was mostly brush," wrote consultant Leonard Whitlow II, a former U.S. History teacher at Grant High School in Portland. "I made extra effort to record every marked grave and knew there were lots unmarked. In fact Dorsey Streets told me that every time they dug a new grave up there, they dug into an existing grave."
