He was originally owned by a local Meaford miller named William Moore, who abused the dog to the point of near death, and even cut off his ears and tail. A local woman named Louise Moore rescued him from what likely would have been a violent death in . Louise Moore's fiancee's sister, Margaret Marshall Saunders ) stayed with their family for some time and spent six months getting to know Beautiful Joe. Beautiful Joe by Marshall Saunders
The 1894 bestseller that sparked more humane treatment of animals.
An Autobiography of a Dog Most Americans have a basic sense of compassion for animals today, yet they may not realize that incredible cruelty to animals was commonplace just a century ago. Books changed that. Black Beauty had been published in England in 1878 and received a tremendous response throughout the world. In 1893, Marshall Saunders won a writing contest sponsored by the Humane Society. Her book, Beautiful Joe: The Autobiography of a Dog, details a dog's horrible treatment by a cruel milkman and his eventual rescue by a kind family. (Margaret) Marshall Saunders (1861-1947), a descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims, grew up in Nova Scotia. Saunders met Beautiful Joe on Lake Huron and spent six months with the dog and his family. His "autobiography", published in 1894, is a fictionalized presentation of a true story, and was the first novel by this Canadian writer. Beautiful Joe gained tremendous popularity, and contributed significantly to changing public attitudes about the treatment of animals. ISBN 0-646-39744-3

One may ask how a cultural and literary historian dare review a book written by scientists dealing very professionally with geology, climate, watersheds, spatial growth, flora, and fauna. But ours is a boundary challenging age,- fascinated by multi-disciplinary projects, exploring liminality and overlaps between scientific and cultural studies. Obviously, our contemporary view of culture is no longer limited to fine arts and popular culture, but has become more comprehensive, including, beside the history of the sciences, the study of scientific attitudes and approaches. Vice versa , many of us, studying space, place, and the interactions of regional with global tendencies, use methods from science as well as from cultural studies. Therefore
