Synopsis
High upon a rock, poised like a bird for flight, stark naked, his satin skin shining like gold and silver in the rising sun, stood a youth, tall, slim of body, not fully developed but with muscles promising, in their faultless, gently swelling outline, strength and suppleness to an unusual degree. Gazing down into the pool formed by an eddy of the river twenty feet below him, he stood as if calculating the distance, his profile turned toward the man who had just emerged from the bushes and was standing on the sandy strand of the river, paddle in hand, looking up at him with an expression of wonder and delight in his eyes...

Margaret Marshall Saunders
The first Canadian author to sell more than a million copies of a book was a woman who disguised her gender by calling herself Marshall Saunders. Her real name was Margaret, but she used the name Marshall because she believed there was more acceptance of stories written by men. She also based most of her stories in the United States though the setting of her best-selling novel, based on a true story about a mistreated dog named Beautiful Joe, was Meaford, then a village on the historic shores of Georgian Bay, Ontario. To mark the 100th anniversary of its original publication, volunteers, in conjunction with the Meadford Town Council, Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club, republished the original story in 1994, made “Beautiful Joe” a town symbol, and dedicated a park adjacent to a pink frame house that had become the dog’s home following his rescue from a cruel, disgusting owner who had cut off his ears and tail. Margaret Saunders wrote nine other children’s books featuring animals, and, although all were successful, none matched the popularity of Beautiful Joe, the first American edition of which sold out in ten days. By 1900 sales in the United States totalled 650,000; in Canada, 558,000, and in Britain, 146,000. Eventually, the story was translated into 18 languages. Saunders’ nine other books are described as “adult romances” and “social problem fiction” by Elizabeth Waterston whose brief biography in 1992 reveals that Saunders’ commitment was not to animal causes only but to such other issues as the abolition of child labour, slum clearance, better playgrounds, and greater recognition of the role of women in society.

Discoverers and doctors have a special place in a roll of honour because they have contributed to the well-being or comfort of millions. The work of Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915), inventor, scientist, surveyor and engineer, for instance, still affects us. A Scot by birth, he came to Canada in 1845 and was chief engineer of the Intercolonial Railway that linked Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. From 1871 he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, surveying its arduous route through the Rockies. But his greatest achievement was the establishment of the system of international standard time in 1884. Another Scottish immigrant brought the province even greater fame. While living at Brantford during the years 1874 to 1876, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) invented the telephone and inaugurated a new era of communications for the world. Bell was also a pioneer speech therapist for the deaf. He moved to the United States but returned in 1890 to live in Nova Scotia. There at Baddeck he devoted the rest of his life to research. His Aerial Experiment Association led to the first manned flight in Canada in 1909. Sir William Osler, Bt., (1849-1919) was a native of Bond Head, Ontario. His medical education at Trinity and McGill was completed in London, Berlin and Vienna. Chosen first Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 1889, Osler became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford in 1905. Medical education and the treatment of patients in hospitals were radically altered by his ideas which he expressed in his book The Principles and Practice of Medicine. A vigorous, humane doctor and a noted diagnostician, he was also an important philanthropist. King George V created him a Baronet in 1911.
